I just read this on AOL this AM. We were on Nassau when the big robbery occurred on 11/20. We didn't know a thing about it until we got home. I feel sorry for the island of Nassau it depends on tourist economy.

Cruise Companies Cancel Nassau Excursions Due to Robberies

After several reports of tourist being targets of armed robberies, three cruise companies have canceled popular excursion trips to the city of Nassau in the Bahamas.

On November 30th, The Associated Press reported that Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival have put a hold on excursions within Nassau.

Until recently, shore excursions such as off-road Segway tours were popular activities for passengers looking to walk-off their sea legs. A recent string of armed robberies, however, has forced cruise companies to rethink these tours in the name of safety.

Just last week, author Carly Milne shared her story of being robbed at gunpoint along with a group of 21 other tourists and tour guides. The incident happened on November 20th at Earth Village, a 162 acre wildlife preserve in Nassau.

Carly, eight tourists, and her guide were roughly ten minutes into a Segway tour when two shotgun wielding men dressed in combat gear jumped out of the brush and forced them to lie down on the ground.

"One man stood at the head of our group, rifle pointed at us, the other walked to the end of our line and started going through each of our Segway pouches, dumping everything out of them and loading everything he wanted to keep into a black garbage bag," Milne reported.

After the men patted down each of the tourists, Milne believed the ordeal was over. Shockingly, the brazen gunmen proceeded to intercept and rob a second group of sightseers. When a tour guide from the second group protested, she was gun-butted in the head. Milne recounted: "The group began to murmur among one another and one of the gunmen fired a silencing shot into the ground as a warning."

After all the tourists were relieved of their valuables, the two men bound one guide's arms behind his back and forced the other into an aqueduct before fleeing on foot.

After returning to safety, the police told Milne's group: "This never happens here. Never." But according to an October 14th report by Nassau's Tribune, a similar incident happened as recently as October 11th. According to the report, a group of 11 tourists "understood to be Americans from a cruise ship" were held up at gunpoint by masked men at the top of the Queen's Staircase. There is no indication as to whether or not the robberies were conducted by the same men.

Police Superintendent Elsworth Moss said it was the first robbery in the area this year. "Every robbery is a concern, whether the victims are tourists or local residents, it's a serious concern for us, but even more so with tourists because this is a tourism-oriented country," Moss told the Tribune.

After the robbery at Earth Village, the Tribune ran a report on November 21 that quoted National Security Minister Tommy Turnquest as saying: "The last thing that we want to happen is to have our tourist destination marred by these thugs." At a press conference, Turnquest vowed that patrols would be increased because of the robberies.

Bahamas tourism director Vernice Walkine told AP that she deeply regretted the incidents. According to Walkine, police have already responded to the robberies by increasing foot and car patrols in the island's popular tourist spots.

Jennifer de la Cruz, spokeswoman for Carnival, told AP that the decision to suspend trips is temporary. Carnival is making other trips available to cruise passengers as an alternative.

I just read something about that also....so i headed over here to find out. To me, it seemed more like they were canceling stopping at nassau altogether for the time being???

The ships are registered in the Bahamas, and are obligated to make a certain number of dockings in the Bahamas each year. I suspect that private islands do not meet this requirement.

All I've heard is the cessation of the Segway tour, but obviously guests are becoming more cautious and many are choosing to stay on the ship.

Agreed...... when we were in Nassau on Thanksgiving Day last week, there were a lot more people onboard all day than what we've seen in the past. The Goofy pool was actually starting to get crowded before 11:00am.

Count me as a vote to get rid of Nassau as a port stop for many reasons.

I would love to stop at Key West instead of Nassau.

Why would a cruise line stop in a port they feel is too dangerous to book excurisions? I'd much rather go to Grand Bahamas or, even better, Key West!

Hm. Well, we're heading to Nassau (in theory) on a 4 day this weekend... will be interesting to see what they do.
We ended up cancelling our shore excursions actually after the 20th - no need to take a risk under those circumstances - not when Castaway Cay is so perfect! :)

That's a good point. They are registered in the Bahamas, not Nassau in particular. Why not change ports? Are any other Bahamian ports equipped to handle a cruise ship??? Or could they tender to perhaps Grand Bahamas or something??? They would still be fulfilling their commitment to stopping at a Bahamian port. I'm sure there is much more to whole "deal" with the ships and the island for their current "contract" or whatever they do. But it may be worth them considering a different port in the Bahamas for the future.

I for one will be staying on the ship on my cruise this month. Ironically, we would have taken the Segway tour this time if not for the robbery...we were actually onboard in Nov. too and almost took that one but it was only three nights so we decided to maximize our time on the ship and do it this month instead. I was also thinking about getting off to get some rum tea, but now that ain't gonna happen. I got really really bad vibes last time we were ashore in Nassau over the summer, and apparently things have gone downhill even worse since then.

Disney really should re-think that stop all together. It seems that if the only other stop on the 3 & 4 day is CC, you are really just paying to go there if everyone is staying on the boat in Nassau. Since the cruises are already somewhat higher than the competition (and especially considering the economic situation) Disney should be very aware of giving value for the dollar.
I have to agree with the previous post. We were there early in November and did not find the "vibe" to be anything but negative in the areas we were in, which was different than our previous cruises. A few years ago we even went and did Ardestra Gardens on our own with the kids. We did not have our kids with us this time, but sadly I will not be taking them off the ship in Nassau next time for sure; too scary. Any of the other ports mentioned earlier would be better to me.

I leave tomorrow to start our vacation. On Dec. 20th we lleave on DCL to go to Nassau and Castaway Cay. We have comfort Suites booked for the Aquamarine park. I will need to cancel....

Thanks

Charley

I believe part of their consideration is also where they can get to, as far as trip time, given the shorter duration of the Bahamas cruises. Most guests probably wouldn't want to be on a ship going 75-100% throttle the entire time in order to make deadlines. Not much fun on deck under those conditions. I'm fairly certain I saw in another thread where it was pointed out that Nassau is the best port, given the time available to travel to/from, for the cruises. But my faulty memory could be acting up.

Couldn't they do other Bahamian ports for their longer cruises like the 4 night and 5 night cruises? I can totally understand that for a 3 night cruise it might not be feasible. We'll be on a 5 night cruise in 2011 on the new ship and I'm not sure I want to get off the ship either. I hope Disney reconsiders. The only way to fight crime like this is to stop visiting period. Who wants to go to Nassau with the thought that you might or might not get held at gunpoint.

Are people calling DCL to let them know how we feel about Nassau? I think that would be good because it seems a little silly to dock there if no one gets off the ship! We didn't have a good experience there in June so we won't ever be getting off the ship in Nassau.

We are going to be on the cruise this weekend also. I have never done a cruise before but from what I have read these events are the excursions farther away from port. We should be safe taking a taxi to Atlantis correct or is that a big risk also? We have a room booked for Comfort Suites and I was under the impression we should not worry too much for that. Since I have never done this before, I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions to either keep it or cancel. Thanks.

No one knows for sure but our past experiences in taking a taxi from the port to Atlantis were fine. No problems. We are sticking with our current excursion plans next month on our 4 day. We are booked on an excursion at Atlantis so this time we will be on the DCL bus.

Our cruise meet started calling DCL asking for more activities to be scheduled on board on port days due to the recent violence/crime reports both in Nassau and in Mexico. We even suggested things like running 4 different movies across an 8 hour period (currently they show the same movie twice) as this would take very little crew involvement and we wanted to respect the fact that some of the CMs get shore time or off time while the ship is in port. They don't need to be activities the require heavy staff involvement, but we need more than pools and one movie as more people are choosing to stay on board.

For those who didn't catch it, there was a serious accident in Mexico involving some WDW CMs and others NOT on a sponsored excursion. Before the authorities arrived, the dead and injured had been robbed of their personal property.
