As a young child, say from age 10 or so, I was able to wander about my neighborhood and the hills behind the houses all day. You just needed to be home for supper. I lived on an Army base, so it was fairly safe. That said, there were wild animals and reptiles in the hills. I encountered many snakes including rattlers. On an Army base it was also not uncommon to find old ordinance laying about. You were not supposed to mess with it of course.
This was one of the joys of my childhood that unfortunately is not possible for many or most these days. You can be shot if your kid walks half a block to the park by themselves.
