"Naked" X-Ray Scans At The Airport.. Your Thoughts?

Either...doesn't matter. Many people commit violent crimes are legally armed. Once the commit the crime, then they no longer are, but they still were legal at one point.

I really don't care if the person carrying is legal or not -- I don't want guns on a pressurized aircraft unless the person carrying them has been SPECIFICALLY trained for that situation. Passing out special ammo at checkpoints is bloody useless unless you load the weapon for them -- and how exactly are we to be sure that we have the correct caliber for all these weapons?

Disaster is assured when Deputy Barney takes that ammo and fires directly at a passenger in a window seat at point-blank range. Even that ammo will shatter a window if you hit it right.

Now if you want to turn the WC on the aircraft into an explosives sniffer (complete with a retardant release system), then maybe we can talk. If the alarm goes off and you don't respond to the FA, then you take a bath. (And we can vent the WC, too, so that whoever is in there loses consciousness from lack of oxygen.) That plan is at least as good as arming Deputy Barney.

If you do indeed pop a hole in a airplane, which frangible ammo will NOT DO, it is not like the Airplane movie. The little oxygen masks pop down. Small price to pay for offing one would be Jihadist I say.

Most handguns run 9mm to .38 to .40 cal route. Enough of those three and you should be fine.

And Barney only had one bullet, mine will hold 8.

Sure. "Many" = less than a majority. Could be anywhere from one in a hundred to 49 in a hundred. But why does it matter? I know I'm not carrying anything the scanner will detect as abnormal; I want to fly. If wanting to fly means being required to make a choice between a backscatter scanner or a serious pat-down, I'll go for the scanner every time.

Well, your wrong. About 90% to 97% of violent crime in this country is committed by people with a prior criminal record/felony. Thereby excluding them from legally owning a gun. And that's all violent crime, not just those committed with firearm. So your 1 in a hundred may be a little high.

However, if 90% to 97% of violent crime is committed by people with a prior criminal record/felony, then 3% to 10% is committed by people without a prior criminal record/felony - including those legally in possission of (and using) firearms.

you're wrong there, the stat is for all violent crime. Go ahead and search for gun crimes committed by legal gun owners. The numbers are so small they don't even register.

Oh that's fairly easy. When the inconvenience (possible privacy issues) out weigh the convenience (air travel)

We want a safe, cheap, quick reliable mode of long distance transportation. When air travel was first introduced it was expensive and only a small % of the population could do it consistently. Now by the time a kid is 10 he has enough air mileage to qualify for an airline comp card.

We are used to simply hopping on a plane for $89 bucks and being some place in 4 hours as opposed to 4 days.

People complained when they had to take off their shoes, when airlines started charging for checking bags, etc etc.

IMO, this will be a blip. In a few years when every airport has full body scanners and the average flying public are used to them, it will be a non issue.

Sure, some folks might object but I betcha there will be more people objecting to having to sit on a tarmac for 4 hours than there will be to xray scanners.

Not to be Larry logical but when those 90% - 97% of people committed their first felony were they not felony free?

In order to commit a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or Xth felony you first have to commit a first felony. If that first felony was committed with a gun it could have very well been registered.

There is also the problem with state laws. The airspace over a state would be subject to the laws of that state. If you take off from a city that doesn't allow ccw and fly over any that don't you wouldn't be able to have the weapon anyway. In the least it would have to be locked in the cargo hold, the equivalent of the trunk of the car, and would be pretty useless against a threat while down there.

It would probably be moot anyway because even in a ccw state, at least the one I live in, a private business can keep you from carrying, even if licensed, on their property. I imagine even if it were allowed the airlines would keep you from carrying on their private property, the plane.

My sister is a cancer patient and has body scans often to check progress. She said tonight she wanted them to go ahead with the scans and hire a Dr. to sit next to the booth. Everyone could walk though and ask for a copy to take into the Dr when returning from vacation. She figured it was a great combination of testing and reason to vacation often. No. It makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. The jihadist is on the airplane with the INTENT of dying. What does he/she care if people are armed and may "hurt" him.

Oh please....it takes a split-second to detonate a bomb. It's not as if the jihadist is routing fuses and a plunger. If the X-Mas day bomb detonated properly it would have been too late for anyone to react.
