Read information in the sticky about tickets, but it still isn’t clear to me when magic your way tickets you buy on a magic band expire? The sticky said the tickets expire anywhere from 9 to 24 months. What determines whether it’s 9 months or 24 months? If we were to buy a 10 day ticket to use this January, but we all only use 5, would we have the remaining 5 days to use on another trip? Our boys will be 8-9 when we buy the tickets, but will be over 10 when we use them the second time. Does this matter?

No. All tickets expire 14 days after first use (with a few exceptions that likely don’t apply in your case).

All unused tickets are set to expire at the end of 2018. That’s where 9-24 months comes in; it’s based on when you bought them because the expiration is set. Just saying they expire on 12/31/18 makes more sense to me, but that date will change sometime next year.

You don't buy tickets on a magic band.
If you bought 10 day tickets and only used 5 days the remaining 5 days would expire within 14 days of first use as there is no longer a non expiration date add on option.
If you purchase now and don't use them they expire December 31st 2018 and I believe after that you'd just pay the difference in price to exchange them for valid tickets.

Just saying they expire on 12/31/18 makes more sense to me, but that date will change sometime next year.

If I just said "All unused tickets expire on 12/31/17," that would not account for such time (as you mentioned) when Disney changes that date.
And, it does not account for the untold thousands of as-yet unused tickets printed prior to June 12, 2017.
I struggled with the wording, as I have absolutely no idea when Disney will change that date or if they change the expiration policy.

The point is that at the time of a new ticket price and policy, there can be many months before
a newly-purchased ticket can expire.
During the second week of June of 2017, the newly-created idea of unused ticket "expiration" was 18 months in the future.
Before that, it was virtually "infinity."
So, who knows what Disney will decide to do next (and when?)
My attempt to be factual gets in the way of Disney's inconsistency.
