Myrtle Beach Mini (Half) Marathon - 8in Surfboard medal AND WiSHers!

 count me in

I'm glad I found this thread. I've been considering this race for a few weeks, but because I'm doing the Wine and Dine Half earlier in the month, I thought the races might be too close together :scared:. However, I was sold once I saw how dang cute the surfboard medal is. I'm hoping to make it a girls weekend and stay at a friends condo :dance3:

Are any of you planning to walk? I'm signed up for the 5k but I'm seriously considering changing to the half. I'm just not sure how ready I'll be so walking is looking pretty good right now....

I'll be walking!! It is always a blast at the back-of-the-pack!

This is so exciting. Myrtle Beach is just down the road from me. I've just registered for my very first race ever - I'm walking a local 4-mile walk next weekend.
I've never done so much as a 5K before but I walk regularly for exercise at about 5mph for 5 miles. I'd like to walk the Disney Princess Half at the end of Feb. I feel that a 5K will be no problem - is walking a half-marathon by Oct. 24 a reasonable goal for me? Like I said, I'm a regular walker but not speed walker. Thank you very much for any advice.

:cheer2:Awesome:cheer2: I used John Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals 14 week training plan for walking a half - I really like it. You'll do great.

I'm going to have to take myself off of the maybe list. There is an outside chance I will end up doing the Men's Health Urbanathalon that weekend in Chicago with a group of friends but I won't be able to get down to this race in 2010. I still need a SC race though so I might still do it in the future.

Thank you. I need to check Bingham out! I appreciate your encouragement very much :)

Is it a bad Idea to follow up Wine & Dine with this 3 weeks later. Wine & Dine will be DW 1st and my 2nd Half Marathon.

Depends on your goals for WnD. My plan, in the words of a great friend, is to finish upright and smiling, and just within the timelimits, so it is no problem to do back-to-back events. I've also done a lot of halfs so I know how I feel afterwards. If you are looking to be super-speedy or are nursing injuries it might be a little more difficult.

IF I do this race, it will truly be a back-to-back for me. I will do a race in Arkansas, get on a plane and do this race the next day. How goofy is that? However, my goals will probably be different than both of your's. Like Pat, I just plan to finish both races upright and with a smile. :teeth:

Susie - JUST DO IT!!! In 2008 I did the Indy half on Saturday and then the last Minnie on Sunday.....you've already done Goofy so this would be a blast!! Especially for an INAUGURAL surfboard medal that doubles as a can opener! I mean, come on, how many of those are there??

Yay! More people who have heard of this race!! :rotfl2:

It's local for me (relatively anyway) so I decided on a whim to sign up for it as a 'test run' for the Princess Half. We'll see if I'm ready by then!

I'll be walking 99% of it though. I'd love to know there are lots of other walkers out there. I know they made it a point to say it was Walker-Friendly, but I'm nervous that we just don't know HOW walker-friendly it is since it's the first time they've done this race.

I'm excited about it!

I'm about 90% sure I'm going to sign up for this. I will be walking too.
To say I'm nervous is an understatement. Can anyone give me a bit of an idea of what it's like to walk in a marathon? How crowded is it? How do they "corral" you? Does everyone who finishes in the allotted time get a medal? Do you always wear a bib w/ a number on it and that is how they time you?

Since this is an inaugural I am not sure how crowded it will be or if there are official corrals. Speaking in generalities - some smaller races just ask participants to self-corral according to your expected pace, others like Disney assign you to a corral and there is no moving into earlier corrals. This race gives all the finishers that awesome surfboard medal, which is way cool. You are expected to wear your bib on your front-side. I've forgotten which kind of timing chip MB is using....some clip on your shoelaces, other races have chips embedded in your bib (isn't technology great?). Your time will begin when you cross the start line.

Walking a half is very do-able and a blast. We like to party at the back-of-the-pack!! Come join the fun.

Thank you SO, SO much for the helpful info  I'm a total "newbie" so I appreciate it!

We're getting closer! Any new sign-ups?

I'm excited about potentially meeting some of you to walk with at the back of the pack. It sounds like there are a few walkers. I'll be there with my friend, but she'll run the half in well under 2 hours, so we definitely won't be racing together. :lmao: If I can do it in 3.5 hours and before they open the roads back up, I'll be doing well. I'm just praying they still have water and supplies at the stations when I get to them. :)

There are currently 2700 people signed up to run the Half Marathon! 3 more months to sign up!!!

Just bumping this up to see if we have any new people joining us!

How is training going for everyone? It sounds like the RD is really getting this race together. I can't wait to see the 'Royal Send-off' from the Medival Times crew!

Received an e-mail about a price increase for the MB Mini. Doesn't say how much but for all of you who plan on registering, you might want to do it before August ends.

As of a few days ago, they were only a little over 1000 away from filling the 7000 spots! It looks like this race will fill up after all. I was wondering!

Get in now if you're thinking of doing it!

The 'modest' price increase is supposed to go into effect after today. So, those on the fence might want to sign up today!
