Hubby, daughter and husband, and I will be going to Myrtle Beach the first full week of June and we have NO reservations made for a place to stay. We want a condo or suite on the beach or near enough to walk, but have no idea what to look for. Anyone here have any ideas for me. We don't want 4 star hotels, but we don't want a cheap dump either, something with a kitchen so I can make breakfast every morning.
Any suggestions or names of places to stay will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

We love Monterey Bay Suites, it's away from the seedy downtown area, but still close to everything. The rooms really look like the pics on the website, montereybaysuites.com. They have a FULL FREE hot breakfast daily, and are one of the few hotels that have a rooftop pool and an indoor lazy river, plus other pools. You have a bedroom, full small kitchen kitchen(can't recall if their is a d/w), liv rm. with a murphy bed, and bath. The room is not huge, but is nice. It's beachfront. It's the best place for the money that we have found, and my kids never want to stay any where else.

You might want to try the Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach. It is directly on the beach, has indoor and outdoor pools, lazy river, hot tubs etc. It is away from the seedy areas of Myrtle Beach in a more residential area, not far from Barefoot Landing. The Cherry Grove fishing pier is not far either. We have been there several times. I would suggest renting directly from the Avista and not an off site condo rental company. Some units are privately owned and in my opinion, the best units are the ones that are managed and overseen by the Avista.
In the summer, you can rent umbrella's and chairs but I find it cheaper to either bring my own or pick up a couple of cheap ones at the many surf shops and leave them or give them to a newly arriving party.
Whereever you stay, I hope you have fun.

Personal website with forum of a couple who lives in Myrtle. The forum is a good small community of folks, much smaller than this one so you get more of a consensus of opinions for information than you get here on the Dis with such a wide variety of opinions.

I'm looking into Monterey Bay, Dayton House, and now Avista since I've just recently discovered their cool webcam which can be controlled via the web panning around the beach.

I haven't been to Myrtle since 1988. We loved Myrtle the 2 years we went when I was a kid compared to Ocean City which we went every year since I was 3. Last year, my family went on our first vacation to Disney, then ended up at OC for a long weekend and OC was the same as I remembered from back in 1986. Now I can't wait to go to Myrtle to see if it is the same as I remembered.

You won't save by backing the trip up ONE week -- that'd put you into Memorial Day weekend, which will be sky high. If you could back up TWO weeks, you'd save money.

Another issue: Myrtle Beach is jam-packed with just-graduated high schoolers the first couple weeks of June. Prices will be high (because they don't care what they pay), and it's known as a rough time to visit. Kids are drinking, driving, drinking and driving. This'll be worse in Myrtle Beach itself, but it'll also be in North and South Myrtle and to some extent in all areas of the Grand Strand.

If you're stuck with this first week of June, you really should look somewhere other than Myrtle.

There is a small window of good rates between bike week and memorial day weekend in MB.

Arrival Date: Saturday May 21, 2011
Departure Date: Saturday May 28, 2011
Room Type: Oceanfront Efficiency
Number of Guests: 3
Includes Lodging for: 7 Nights
Total Price: $604.96

Our room has 2 queen beds and a kitchen. If you go back too far you'll be surrounded by hundreds of loud smelly motorcycles. Their engines echo throughout the whole city. We do have one day of overlap with bike week but the extra night was super cheap so I added it.

Thanks for the responses. What about the Landmark, anybody know anything about this resort? Good, bad, indifferent?

I like the Landmark, as soon as my house sells in TN I am buying one of their condos.

The Landmark has a lot of pools and has a great kiddie area. It also has a parking garage attached to the building with a walkway. You don't have to worry about being run over on the strip.

The rooms themselves are good. The bathrooms are tile and granite. In most standard rooms there is a kitchen "strip". There is a dorm fridge, sink & microwave. You also get a few cabinets. I think there are kitchen rooms but I've not stayed in one of those. We normally bring an electric skillet for simple stuff.

I don't know if they added on or what, but some rooms have outside doors and some have interior doors. Some of the outside doors are located in dark exterior hallways which I don't like at all. Get them to send to a room map. We've always stayed in an interior view room (pool roof view), with an interior door, just a couple of rooms down from the main lobby elevator.

We either stay at Dayton House or the Landmark when we go. We used to go to Sand Dollar North/South but we had two bad trips (filthy) so we marked them off the list.

The only real problem I have with the Landmark is the pool roof has been dirty and you can't see anything in the cheap rooms. They also had elevator issues where they'd break down, but from what I've been sent by my Realtor, they've replaced several.

Wow! As a member of a bike organization that was pretty rude.

Not sure if you know this....

Be sure when looking up the resort of choice to click on "Specials". Most places have a link to 30% off summer rates if you book usually by Feb. 28. Dayton House 30% off is book by March 15.

There are other specials listed too, for spring, winter, etc. I am almost ready to book the Dayton House 2 room oceanfront suite for 5 nights for $550 in June.

There are two bike weeks -

Bike Week - May 13-22
Atlantic or Black bike week - May 26-30

When we used to go to myrtle beach - we always went the week after memorial day - crowds were not to bad.. However, now that we have been to hilton head - we have not gone back.

If you think you want it, I'd get it. Dayton House prices seem to increase as they fill up. I just reran my numbers and it is $64 more for the same nights in the same room. I booked our room on Jan 2nd.

I was talking to a friend about MB this morning and she reminded me that they've stay at Camelot and enjoyed it. It's pricier but her room had a kitchen in it.

Try www.vrbo.com We have used them for over 10yrs. Rent direct from the owner so prices are good, the convenience of not having to "check in and check out" is worth it to us. We always go the 2nd week of June and stay in the Shore Drive area. We have never had issues with graduates or crowds of any kind. Love that area!

Does anyone have any info about North Beach Plantation. I received an e-mail from them offering a 30% discount. I've read several reviews and haven't found anything negative.
