I've been studying languages and don't have much chance to practice them so I went looking for pen pals -- there are a lot of questionable (dating services and the like) websites out there but if you want one for you or your kids to practice the foreign language they are studying (or even just correspond -- some people just want to practice English) try mylanguageexchange.com . I can highly recommend it! The site suggests that if you are practicing each other's language, that you should write each paragraph in both languages, and then offer each other help - correcting each other's letters and making suggestions about the language. It can be totally anonymous -- you can go through the site with your emails and the people never know who you really are. (DD has a couple of boys that she writes too that way to practice the language she studies.) You could theoretically choose a penpal from any country who speaks any language!

I am writing to a woman that I can genuinely call my friend, now, from Europe. We've been writing for about a year and have revealed our true identies to each other! We send each other books and magazines from our countries and we're going to spend the weekend together this fall! She has been soooo much help to me in my language study and I think I have helped her!

What a great idea. Won't work for the language I am studying but for oral languages it is great.
