I was walking on a major street in NYC to go to a supermarket. As I was passing the Vitamin Store, a guy ran out holding six large containers of some type of powder mix. He narrowly misses knocking me over as he runs into the street. He stops to pick up one of the containers he dropped and proceeds to stand close by and place all the containers in a bag. He has a big smile because he knows he just got away with stealing merchandise. I turned to the employee who was standing at the open door and she confirmed that the guy had just stolen all those containers of protein powder.

Meanwhile, I get home, open my mail, and see I received a speeding ticket for going 8 miles over the speed limit. I will obviously pay because I did speed. It's just one of those things that makes me question everything.

Thanks for listening, I feel better just typing this out.

Can't find anything wrong with your line of thinking, rlk.

I get it. Why do you and I follow the rules, and would very likely have the hammer brought down on us if we didn't, but other people get away with so much garbage? What happened to standards? Where are the social norms we may have been raised to expect? For the longest time, I have believed that my honor and pride of self stem from the fact that I will do what is right whether I'm being watched or not. If I make a mistake, I own it. I can't worry about others, but I will vote and advocate for the things I believe in. That's all any of us can do. But, yes, it's very frustrating.

How is there a resale market for protein powder? Why do they bother? Isn't synthetic identify theft far more lucrative?

Things like this don't happen in our town simply due to the fact that our town will prosecute the criminal. Also my employees won't stand for it. The one time a kid tried to steal a $150 item his mother paid for it. I let him keep it in his pocket and put it on his mothers bill. Of course she asked what she was being charged for then defended her son and said he's not a thief which only lasted until I showed her the video. He tried to give the item back but I said "too late" Now someone will pay for it or I will call the police. I have zero tolerance for a thief and will go to jail myself to defend what is mine.

I think many companies (large and small) have decided it "costs more" to physically stop and/or prosecute shop lifters than the amount of loss from the product.

When I was young, my dad used to jokingly say, "It's not wrong to do wrong. It's wrong to get caught."

My dad would never have imagined that his words would be so prophetic. ☹️

Was it one of those automated systems? Like an area where speed is done by automated radar or something like that?

I think in my area something like that you'd be pulled over from either a work zone, active school zone, or someone really being nitpicky since 8mph isn't normally that bad and you don't really hear much about that low over. The excessive speeders are usually the targets (unless work zone or active school zone).

It is sorta an "oh come on" moment though

It was from an automated camera. While it is a bit nitpicky, I was going over the speed limit. The irony is that I was trying to save money that day on a car service to the airport for my son. I decided to drive. Now with the $50 ticket, I think the car service/Uber would have been cheaper.:P

Yesterday am on my walk to work (also NYC) I saw a knock down slam against the wall fight between a guy in a suit and a guy not in a suit. Eventually security came out and broke it up but it was a new “fun” commuting experience - on top of public nudity, rampant drug use, horrible smells, mental illness, filth etc — all within the past 2 weeks. Can anyone really blame me for dreaming about Disney?

Hate to break it to you but at Disney you could encounter fights, drunkenness, lack of cleanliness in the parks, etc.

Obviously not the gravity of what you've witness with the other things but dreaming about Disney isn't going to guarantee you that idyllic place.

Booo! Don’t burst my bubble!

It also helps that I’m on vacation at Disney.

I'm not sure I could/would stand by and watch it, my gut says I'd freaking tackle the scumbag - probably beat up in the process but I'm sick of this new America we live in. /rant_off
Hey, at least protein powder thieves in NYC today beat what NYC was like in the late 70's and 80's.

Let's all pretend the guy went home and OD'd on protein. Maybe he pooped himself into oblivion. We could be seeing an injustice but not seeing the poetic, possibly gastric, outcome. Not a pretty picture, SteveH, but that's just another story in the City that Never Sleeps. *Insert dramatic music here*

Wait, if this automated camera is within NYC, then you may be able to fight this. The mayor had set up new cameras all over the city last week. It was all over the news. They are supposed to be set to not go off unless one is 10 miles over the speed limit. That camera wasn't supposed to ding you for 8 miles over. Write back and say the camera wasn't set correctly.

While one may say, yes, you were speeding. Even you admit to speeding. (Don't say that when you write in. Just say the camera is set incorrectly.) It's the principle of the new law. They are ALL supposed to be set at 10 miles over. Not some at 8 mph, some at 9 mph, some at 10 mph. That little technicality may get you off.

Manned radar guns with state troopers in cars in NY & NJ are also set at 10 mph over. Don't ask how I know. :rolleyes1
