I live in cook county. Home of the highest sales taxes in the country. Hey lawmakers, I'm holding up my special #1 finger just for you.

Now the state is planning on raising gas taxes 19-27 cents per gallon.

I miss Blago!

If it makes you feel better, here's the proposed taxes for NY State (the most heavily taxed state in the Union...)

*
An "iPod tax" that charges state and local sales tax for "digitally delivered entertainment services" - in other words, that new Beyonce song you download.
*
State sales tax at movie theaters, sporting events, taxis, buses, limousines and cable and satellite TV and radio.
*
Costlier driving with the repeal of the 8-cents-per-gallon sales tax cap on motor and diesel motor fuel, plus and increase in the auto rental tax.
*
Tuition increases at SUNY and CUNY, $620 and $600 a year respectively.
*
A 50 cent tax on cigars. The current tax is equal to 37% of the wholesale price, or 34 cents a cigar.
*
No more sales tax break on clothes and shoes worth $110 or less, except during two weeks a year.
*
Higher taxes on wine, beer and flavored malt beverages. He would also impose an 18% tax on non-nutritional drinks like soda.
*
The rich would pay more for luxury items through an additional 5% tax imposed on cars costing more than $60,000, aircraft costing more than $500,000, yachts costing at least $200,000 and jewelry and furs costing in excess of $20,000.
*
In addition, a host of a fees, including those related to motor vehicle licensing and registration, parks and auto insurance, would go up, as would various state-imposed fines.

Its a good thing Iowa is just across the river from us so we can fillup on cheap gas. I miss Blago's hair! :sad1:

I have a 35 cents off per gallon coupon I got from the ACME, you want me to send it to you:confused3 It's only good at Exxon stations :)

Now, now, now guys. I'd like to welcome you tothe fine state of NJ. Where we recently had the honor of having 5 out of the 10 places with the highest property taxes in the Country.
Oh, and driving will also cost you and arm and a leg because I believe we are also number 2 on the hit parade of the highest car insurance list.

As much as I hate the idea of increased taxes, we have to figure out how to pay for the programs that Blago started. He always talks about the All Kids program but what isn't being mentioned is that it's practically impossible to find a doctor that will accept it. Why? Because they are not getting paid for the services that they provide.

IL ranks 51 out of 50 states (you might wonder how that is possible but they count DC in the stats) for providing services to the developmentally disabled.

Absolutely agree.

Thanks for the list on NY- I'm a NY'er and haven't seen that list. I can only imagine what our great(not) mayor has in store...

You took the words right out of my mouth!!! My taxes are going up almost $500(4200 in taxes now so then i will be 4700 this is cheap compared to other towns that well over 9000 a year) this year for my house and I pay $145 a month for a 86 ford truck and 2000 jeep.Basic car insurance.

You're welcome. They came out a few months ago. I emailed that over to my bf after reading in an article. I've posted it a few times now, glad I saved it :rolleyes2

This is going to be happening everywhere. People are driving less, buying less, earning less, and unlike the federal govt, states can't just run annual deficits. They have to make up that lost revenue somewhere.

Exactly. My state is really having to scrimp and save due to all of the financial loss from the summer flooding. If a few cents added onto our fuel costs can help the cleanup, I won't complain.

You're all welcome to move here to Connecticut. We have plenty of room since people can't get out of here fast enough. Oh, and bring plenty of money because there's no jobs to be had. I'd advise a tent as well because you can't buy a house and rents are sky high. Bottom line..no work, no filing for the IRS, no filing for the state tax and you have no money so you can't buy anything you'd pay a tax on. So come move to the tax free state, love to meet you.

I just want to comment on the cute baby in your sig.

Well I live in the People's Republic of Maryland. The new thing I heard this morning is that we will begin taxing "junk food".

Here's a crazy thought. How about we tighten the belt at the state level first, then let's talk about more taxes. My state just passed the largest tax increase ever and they're already talking about more taxes. The only thing stopping it now is they have been told they would be "taken care of" in the stimulus bill.

The talk is about raising it 8 cents from the current 19 cents/gallon to 27 cents/gallon.

From The Chicago Tribune

House Speaker Michael Madigan will support a proposal to raise the existing 19-cent-per-gallon motor fuel tax to 27 cents—a boost that could raise $500 million a year to fund bond payments on a $5.9 billion transportation repair plan, a Madigan spokesman said.
