Florida School Post Card Exchange Contest
My son needs your help. He is 11 yrs, and is in 7th grade. Please don't let him down and help him.

Post Card Contest Request
We have a project in his geography class called "PostCard Exchange." Pease forward help and see how many cards we get.

The objective is to familiarize students with communities around the United States and beyong through communication with friends, family and personal travel.

How the competition works: Students compete with other class periods and their teacher. Whoever has the most postcards in December and then again in May wins. There will be a reward to the winning class in December and a reward to the winning class in May.

Rules:
Florida postcards (since this is where we reside) are nice and welcome, but they will not count towards the tally.
The postcard must have the student's first and last name written in greeting.
No electronic postcards.
Postcards must be sent directly to Oyssey Middle School and postmarked outside of Florida.
REGULATIONS:

Only 1 postcard per individual, per place. In other words, 6 postcards postmarked in Yonkers, NY from Grandma A equals 1 postcard. One postcard from Grandma A and one from Grandpa A equals 2 postcards. However, if Grandma A visits another town, state or country, she is more than welcome to send another postcard that will count towards tally.
Please understand that postcards are being used for educational purposes. It is perceivable that they will be personal to students, to a certain degree. Be advised that if they are deemed inappropriate (anything that may be obviously embarassing to the student, his or her peers, or teacher) they will not count towards tally.
An international postcard counts as 5 domestic postcards.
Students are strongly encouraged to send postcards to their class when they travel outside of Florida during this school year.
Please send postcards to:

Kevin O'Donnell
c/o Odyssey Middle School
Ms. Flake's Geography Class
9290 Lee Vista Blvd.
Orlando, FL 32829

Not sure what to say: Here is the type of information we're looking for:

Climate Information
Local Landmarks
What people do for a living
Local new stories (write something about what is currently taking place in the area)
Anything related to Geography
Thank you so much for your help and we will try to let you know how he did.

Maria

Will be sending another out from Cape Cod, Mass.
Good Luck Kevin!!!

and remember.....Overseas cards count as 5 points - keep that in mind so anyone you know abroad, email them.

I assume that they have to be signed from the sender? First/last name? How would they know if Grandma didn't just send a bunch from Yonkers and signs them Sue, Sally, Sam, ....

I forward it along to DD8's 3rd grade teacher - they are studying communities in Socail Studies. I even offered to pick up the postage. Hopefully they will help out. I told her to pass it along to older classes if she doesn't think it's appropriate for her class. The rest of the family will be sending them out, regardless!

HTH,
laurie

I am going to try and mail one out by mid week, is that too late?

That's a great way to learn about the country! I remember, way back when I was 16, I went to a convention in Disneyland. When the other kids heard I was from NY, I would say about 75% of them thought ALL of NY is city. So far from the truth.

I will send a postcard from Long Island, NY tomorrow.

I have one of the State Capitol Bldg of Trenton, NJ and it will go in the mail first thing in the morning. Good luck with the contest! My DD is a teacher and loves the idea - but she teaches Kindergarten and the project isn't age appropriate for her class.

I spoke with the teacher because I was getting questions about sending cards in envelopes.

If you postmark them in different towns (some post offices will do that for you), then yes, you can put them in an envelope and send them like that to save on stamps. Remember, they must be postmarked in separate cities, if they are from only one person. If other people send (lets suppose you, a spouse, child, friends, siblings) send also, then they can have the same postmarks as yours.

I hope this clears up some of the questions and makes it easier.

He received 13 postcards today - Boston, Minneapolis and he has to document the others. I will be going to his class and help his teacher enter it all into the database.

She was excited today to start getting some.

You'll have three from Central PA coming (Me, DH, and DD). This is a great project. Good Luck!

They started coming in, he is very excited as is his teacher. We got an email today from the South Pole! They are sending one but we won't get it until sometime in November because planes will not be going there until October. He is really excited about that one.

I'll keep everyone posted. I will be going in next week to do a database and will post where they are coming from.

Postcard from Hawaii arrived Thursday. They are getting excited now to see where they are all coming from. Kevin told me that their most exciting time of the day now is when their teacher starts to read the postcards and they have moved into FIRST PLACE.

It is very exciting. Here is a note that Kevin posted on the other boards regarding his postcard assignment:

Boy are we excited. After missing two more days from school because of hurricane Jeanne, we went to school today to find approximately 30 postcards. Mom will go to school this week to see and document where each one came from. However, we did receive postcards from the Oakland As (baseball team) and from NY Governor George Pataki.

We are so excited and can't wait to get to class to see where the next batch is from.

Thank you to each and everyone of you who has taken the time to send one and keep them coming.

UPDATE 9/30/04: My son's teacher contacted me and she was very excited. Kevin alone received over 70 postcards today. She is so excited. I will be going in next week to help her catalog each and every one.

So far we have received from SC, MD, NJ, MA, NY, NC, MN, WA, TX, HI, PA, CA, IL, IN, ME, DC, WI, MO, GA, Canada, New Zealand and UK, so far this week. This does not include the ones received today, which have not been documented yet.

He got one from the Baltimore Orioles and two other baseball teams, but he did not see those yet.

Keep those cards coming. Don't forget, the contest goes all the way through May 2005. They will pick a winning group in December and another winner in May.

Thank you again.

I've been thinking of Kevin and today found a great postcard of Boston Light. It's on its way-from my office. Hope to find a postcard of another lighthouse closer to my house that I'll send from home.

Thank you and that is so cute to even think of him like that. He loves lighthouses. Check your PM.

They have been doing tests this past couple of days and he has not been able to take a look at all the postcards he has received, but hopefully now that I am cleared to assist in his class, I will be able to go in and help his teacher.

In order to volunteer in the school, we have to fill out a background check and be cleared by the local police department and I got my letter today.

Thank you to all and keep them coming.

We are sending out 4 from Stratford, Prince Edward Island this weekend. Keep us updated on his progress. I think the idea is so cool.

Paula:wave2:

Sorry for not updating, but can you believe it that with all the hurricanes and the storms (lightning) we have been getting almost daily, all three of my computers crashed. I am actually borrowing a neighbors.

He is in the lead. He has close to 250 points right now. They are coming in from all over the world and the USA. I will be going into his class this coming week to record them all for his teacher, so I will be able to see each and every one and then update where they are coming in from. Don't fret, I will post them here and let you know.

Thank you. Some of the cards are just beautiful from what he tells me. Everyday he comes in really excited to tell me - China, New Zealand, Australia, Africa, UK, Canada and of course, the US and Caribbean.

I don't know if he got one from Houston, but he has not mentioned it. Go ahead and send them to him. He will love them since he is a big baseball fan.
