My son is watching A Christmas Story

The common phrase in our house lately:

"October is almost Thanksgiving. That means we can watch White Christmas, right?" :rotfl:

OMG we were talking about this movie yesterday. I just got everyone set for supper and then dd said, "I need more milk!" So I got up and grumbled about how she always waits until I am sitting down to announce she needs something and my husband said, "My mother has not had a hot meal in years......"

Best. Movie. EVER.

"Randy lay there like a slug! It was his only defense!"

And the best scene ever: "Deck the harrs with boughs of horry, fa ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra."
"No, no, not 'ra ra ra ra', 'la la la la'! Try again."
"Deck the harrs with boughs of horry, fa ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra."
"No, no! Sing something else."
"Jingre bers, jingre bers, jingre arr the way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sreigh!"

Now I am not embarrassed to admit that my oldest DD and I watched a Christmas movie last week with Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen in it. Sorry don't remember the name of it. Was cute though.

Directv was out for a few days so DD ran down to my cousin to borrow some DVDs that we do not own and came home with that movie amongst others. IMO you can listen to Christmas music and watch Christmas movies all year long because everyone needs a little cheer sometimes due to so much stress and all from the economy. I sure needed a break and enjoyed watching it. It was nice to laugh for a change.

Ahh.. Christmas with the Kranks, great movie.. I am awake and I am watching... A christmas story.

I love that movie! "You'll shoot your eye out, kid."

We're trying to hit a lot of Halloween movies now, but A Christmas Story will be watched soon!

:thumbsup2yep, thanks that was it! We enjoyed it. Since my family is still sleeping I have to be very quiet so no movie watching for me right now.

How many here have seen the sequel: "It Runs In The Family"? Not a classic, but still entertaining and funny.

oooh...didn't know about that!

I love this movie. I watched it all night the night before I had my middle son. It only brings happy thoughts!

THANK YOU! I told DH and the kids this weekend that it's been far too long since I saw Christmas Story -- they laughed at me.

But then again, a co-worker and I shared the "Heat Miser" and "Snow Miser" songs during staff meeting yesterday....:rolleyes1 He and his new wife are dressing up as them for Halloween and I was the only one in the room who knew the songs.

What the heck is wrong with people???:confused3

Spent most of the weekend putting Christmas music on my mom's computer so I could then transfer it to her ipod. So I ended up listening to Josh Groban-Noel in the car yesterday and this morning. I'll probably transfer my Christmas music back to my ipod later today now that I'm thinking about it.

Have to admit that I'm not a fan of A Christmas Story! I saw it the first time in the theater and just not my type of movie. We have a ton of Christmas DVDs. I may have to pull them out this week! DH will not be happy though!:santa:

I had never heard of that movie before about 6 years ago. Truly a generational thing. Those under about 35 love it, those above 35 could care less.
A great cult film now, but a HUGE bomb when it was released. It was introduced the week before Thanksgiving 1983, and was pulled from most theaters BEFORE Christmas.

Bring on White Christmas, Rudolph the Rednosed Raindeer, Miracle on 34th Street, and a Christmas Carol.

oooh...didn't know about that!
The sequel was released in 1994 and since it was shot so long after the original the casting was totally redone with Charles Grodin playing "The Old Man" and Mary Steenburgen playing the mother.

If you haven't read it, both films are taken straight from Jean Shepherd's book "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash". However, the timing of "A Christmas Story" is totally different than the book. In the book, Ralphie is all grown up and he returns to his boyhood hometown in "The Region" of Indiana (around Gary). While there he goes to a local bar that is owned by his old childhood friend Flick. Business is slow, so the two reunited friends start recalling scenes from their youth. Each chapter is a different "adventure." Only the chapter about the Red Ryder BB gun takes place during Christmas-time. BTW, that memory is triggered by grown-Ralphie seeing a woman wearing a button stating that children should not be given toy guns, lest they grow up to become violence prone (I parental attitude that I suffered through and had to make due with Lego firearms.). Half the stories fall into "A Christmas Story" and the other half are contained in "It Runs In The Family" (apparently later re-branded to reference its famous half as "My Summer Story"). Many of the same characters appear in both, including the next-door nemesis "The Bumpus Family" and their dogs. Needless to say, the better scenes were cherry-picked for "A Christmas Story", but if you like Shepard's works you'll still like "Family". Also, check out another lesser known Shepard written video "The Great American Fourth of July, and Other Disasters" (also taken from material in "In God..."). Here's It Runs In The Family.
