Congratulations! My DS11 is working on first class right now. In fact he is on a camping trip right now and in charge of his patrol's cooking. Hopefully breakfast went well and no one is starving!!
My son is working on his Star rank and is camping with his troop this weekend. He's currently serving as a Den Chief for a Tiger den. Soooo funny listening to him talk about how hyper they all are!
He installed back pack hooks at his former elementary school. The company they were purchased from was requested from the school - Hang-Safe-Hooks. http://hangsafehooks.com/
These are not the hooks that hang out from the wall but plexiglass thick ones - think almost 1/2" think and flat. He had to measure all the classrooms to determine how much wood to purchase (the school bought this for him) as well as the hooks. That part alone was almost 3000.00 total!!!! Then he had to cut the wood to the various sizes needed, sand all the wood (there was a total of 600'), prime it, paint it with two coats of paint to match the rest of the school. Drill holes at predetermined spacing and then screw in all of the hooks - 600 total - and each had two screws. After that we had to transport these to the school and help the district employees attach them to the outside walls of each classroom.
Snags - the school initially purchased the hooks but didn't purchase enough. We had to reorder more hools and that delayed the completion of the project by about 1 month. He started in early September of 2010. Ordered the wood and hooks. The first work day with troop members was mid November - sanding and painting. The following weekend we held another. drilling and screwing the hooks in . We realized there was a shortage the week prior so the school placed a reorder of hooks and then we finished with everything including installation the end of January. His Eagle book was submitted to our council scout store in person and the following week he was called for his Board of Review.
I loved this project because I teach at this school as a sub and the kids would just toss their backpacks on the floor outside of the class rooms or on the floor in the classrooms and they were dangerous as other including me could trip over them. We have had so many parents and teacher too say how much they appreciated this project. It will be at the school for years and years so we can continue to 'visit' it too.
Cody managed the boys very well at the work days. He did an amazing job with this project as it was huge in my opinion.
I will try to post some photos on this thread if I can figure out how to do that..
CONGRATULATIONS to your son! My BFF's son recieved his almost a year ago. I've known him since he was 2 and lived with him (& my BFF) since he was 12 (he is now 19) and I am just as proud of him for his accomplishment as his mom is.
