We received a letter from one of our soldiers we adopted through OMP. My kids drew him pictures and used their allowance money to buy items for his Care Package. I was so touched and moved by his letter that I had to share it with all of you - This was dated April 13th:

To the Bergqusit Family,

Hi....First of all, thank you so much for your package and letter. I really enjoyed the art work. You must know I put them up in my operations tent. Everyone here loved them.

I really don't know what to say. The fact that your children used their savings for me actually made me tear up. Thank them for me. I've always known children were great, Lauren & Eric sure do prove it.

I'm 20 years old. I'm a Koren-American from the LA area. I lived in CA for most of my life until I turned 16, where I went to live at a monastery in the mountains of Korea. When I returned at 18, I had realized that I had grown up to much at the monastery and couldn't hang with my friends. So, I joined the Army. Basically, I'm like the AT & T for the Army. I provide phones and Video conferencing.

I feel that I'm boring you all so I'll stop talking about me. You should all know that knowing that you care gives me the energy to go on over here. I've been here for 5 months now and expect to be here till Sept. but honestly I feel that I could be here for as long as my country needs me to. Just because of people like you. At first I was anrgy that I was here risking my life for people that didn't care. With all the protests and marches, I was really down and out. But the letters from everyone telling me that they do care has given me a new strength, And now your letter, package, drawings, pictures of Lauren & Eric has given me all I need and more.

Lauren and Eric have inspired me to write the this Poem:

During this time and place
I look up to the stars
And wonder about the states

Trying to see through all those faces of hate
Burning Old Glory, shouting distaste

Then out of the smoke
A little child appears, with a ribbon on his chest
Bringing great signs of hope

Young and Old, hands held together
With a bond that'll never be broken
Because what they cherish they'll hold forever

And now I can rest, because now I see

Never again will I see those faces of hate
Because of you and your faith.

I hope to hear from you soon. I've enclosed a check for early/late birthday gifts for Lauren & Eric. I truly feel as if I'm their big brother Jeff. And don't forget, Mother's Day is coming up.
Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

I told my dh tonight never in a million years would I think doing such a simple gesture would make me feel this good. I can't believe how much these Care Packages mean to these brave men and women who are doing so much for us. I don't think I have ever been so moved before - especially by someone I've met before!! You can bet Jeff's going to have another Care Package shipped out tomorrow!!! Keep sending the letters and packages!!!

SAVE THAT POEM!! It will be an inspiration for generations to come. Historians will look for poems like that to help understand what the GI of this war was going through in his/her mind. Poems like these get past the politics, past the media, and into the souls of those who really mattered.

I can envision this type of poem on a memoial to the brave men and women of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

What an absolutely incredible letter! What a special way you have touched his life. And what an impact this will make on your children. Thank you for sharing with us.

Absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful young man! I am sure you will always treasure his poem and letter!:D

I have goose bumps. What a great letter. What a special young soldier. I am sure your kids have learned such a lesson of patriotism and caring from this whole experience.

I forgot to mention Jeffery gave me his e:mail address!! So, I e:mailed him today to thank him for the wonderful letter and beautiful poem and to see what kind of goodies he would like. I also told him his gesture to buy the kids b-day gifts was very, very kind but I couldn't accept money from him to do that. Instead, I told him it would be my pleasure to buy the kids a gift and make it from him.

That was very nice to read today, thanks for sharing :D

WOW! What a touching letter! Thanks for sharing! :)

To think that you & your children may have inspired that poem! What a gift he gave to you!! Brought tears to my eyes too.

Thank you for sharing that letter with us. I sure hope my Marines got their packages from me. Now I really feel good about sending care packages.

Okay, I'm all puddled up now. What a wonderful letter and what a wonderful young man. I'm really glad that you shared this with us, thank you.
