My SIL is doing WW with me. She's lost about 28 lbs. since 2/6 and has about 24 more to go. She had a check up with her doctor on Friday and he told her he only wants her to lose one pound a MONTH and said it will "only" take her two more years to get the rest of the weight off!!!!

She likes her doctor but said she is NOT going to follow his advice! Shoot, if he told me that I'd be losing weight for the next 70 years!!! I don't know what he was thinking because I thought 2 lbs. a week was considered medically safe. And he pronounced my SIL totally healthy so there isn't any underlying medical condition to make him say this.

That does sound kinda funny doesn't it? Did he say why he had that opinion? And - how does you SIL feel about what he said? If yuo go by the 2lbs/week therory- she is losing weight a little faster then that- maybe that's why he is concerned?

LOL, Liz. I would have just nodded my head and let that go in one ear and out the other. I'm sure he just wants her to slow down so she can make this a permanent change, but 1 pound a month is a little slow. Especially if you have a lot of weight to lose; I would have to live a very, very long time to get to my goal weight if I only lost a pound a month. very, very long.......ok, I'm going to stop thinking about it now.

    What the heck?

What is she going to do? That seems like weird advice to me.

I'd be losing weight for the next 70 years

Okay, I can't post a response to this until I stop laughing, LOL LOL LOL. You and me both, Liz.

I know that Dr. Atkins tells us to lose our last 5 or 10 pounds about that slowly. His contention is that we will be more likely to keep it off by the time we lose the last of our weight very slowly, because by the time those pounds are gone our habits are ingrained.

Your sister's doctor may be thinking like this, too. But I think I would lose as much as I could and then lose the last five pounds at one a month.

What is she going to do? Ignore him?

Wow! -I'm also ROTFLOL at the thought of losing a pound a month for the next 70 years! When do you get to enjoy the "fruits" of all your hard work! In the nursing home???? :p

Did you SIL ask for an explanation?? Demand a second or even a third opinion??? How in the world would you go about losing only 1 pound per month?????

My theory is that aliens have taken over the good doctor's mind/body. Sure can't think of any other explanation!

Thanks for the laugh -

Without an underlying condition that would require that it makes no sense. I have a friend with an underlying condition that can flar up with a rapid weight loss but even he doesn't have to go that slow!

Maybe doc doesn't really want it to come off so he can reap the benefits (payments) of the complications that come with keeping the weight on? ;)

OMG!! I have tears over this comment!! The nursing home!!! ROFLMAO!!! :):):)

No, she has no intention of following his advice on this one! And she didn't ask why he was saying this either. I don't think she could only lose 1 lb. a month on WW if she was sticking to the program! And who would want to continue paying the weekly WW dues for two more years to lose only 25 lbs!!!

She said she hopes she doesn't get sick or anything and have to go back to him any time soon!

LOL at the nursing home comment!!!!!! :p

His advice sounds strange to me too. I would be curious to know what his reasoning was!

I am wondering if there was some miscommunication here. Maybe she miss understood and he said 1 pound a week? Or he meant one pound a week but said a month, on accident. I think one pound a week, sounds more reasonable then one pound a month. If I listened to that advice I would be 136 before I lost all my weight.

I don't think there was any miscommunication because after saying the thing about losing 1 lb. a month the doctor said "then it will just take you two more years to reach goal." My SIL said she just shook her head knowing she had no intention of following his advice!

I'm famous for ignoring my doctor's advice....especially when she reminds me it's time for my tetanus booster!!!

Seriously though, I think she's safe if she loses more than one pound per month. I can't even believe a doctor would tell her that given the health risks of being overweight. I would have thought 1 pound a week would sound more reasonable, but one pound per month? How old is this doctor and what medical school did he go to?

anniet: OMG - I just had my tetanus booster a couple of weeks ago! The shot didn't hurt at all - I hardly felt it. But 2 minutes later I thought I was going to die! And it lasted about 3 days! I could hardly move my arm!!! I will think twice before I get one of those again! ;)

That doctor is just plain weird. How could you possibly only lose 1 pound per month? He must be skinny. :p
