I had my interview a while ago and I informed my advisor about the program. He keeps saying the only way the school will give me credit is if I take business classes at my school first. I told him I don't have to receive credit and he said that the school will only represent me if I am receiving credit.

What do I do? I don't want to take business classes because that is not my major. Should I just not listen to him? All I want is a nice resume.

Disney doesn't require you to take classes, so that is totally up to you. Most schools just treat it as a semester off. My school doesn't give credits for the Disney classes, however, I can take a three credit internship class. Maybe that's available?

What does he mean by the school will only "represent" you if you are receiving credit? I'm not sure I am following. I did not receive credit for my CP, so I basically took a 1-semester leave of absence from my school.

My advisor had me email the business advisor and she said:

"I am the instructor for the Business Internship course. The students that which to enroll in this class must meet the prerequisites for the course which are: ENG 073 and ENG 063 or satisfactory scores on placement tests, successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of study in business courses (with a minimum grade of C in all classes) or an equivalency and approval by the course instructor. This internship course is designed for business majors only so if you are a Recreation major you would not meet the requirements for acceptance into the class"

I told my recreation advisor that I'm not even sure about my theraputic recreation major anymore because I hate my teacher and still haven't learned anything because he sucks! My advisor told me that maybe the hospitality business major might be better suited for me because I want to help people have fun. But I don't see why I need the school's permission to do this. I just don't think they fully understand. If I change my major and take the business internship class, then how about I intern at Disney now, come back in six months, take classes and then take the business internship class and go back to Disney!?

Yeah - I think your advisor may be misunderstanding the situation?
They probably hear "college program" and automatically think they need to represent and back you up! If you don't need to receive credit for this - then just go ahead and do it!

If you aren't concerned with receiving credit for the program I believe all you need to do is talk to the enrollment office and fill out a form stating that you're taking an Academic Leave of Absence. It really does vary depending on your school and major, but that's all I need to do.

I don't understand why your advisor is concerned unless you were determined to graduate 'on time.' For instance, with my majors it will take me 8 semesters to get my degree. If I take a leave of absence during school for the CP, my graduation date gets pushed back by a semester. If you don't want to graduate a bit later than planned, you may need to ask you advisor about finishing in 7 semesters if possible.

Other than that, your advisor really has no say in what you choose to do, it's your life! So if you're set on doing the CP, he has to understand that. I don't see how your school can 'refuse to represent' you, unless they only mean credit-wise.

edit: I think I looked too far into the problem hehe. What ESCAPAY said is probably more likely the solution. See if you can explain to your advisor what you'll be doing! Advisors never understand the CP!

I'm a hospitality management major which is a business degree at my school and my school doesn't accept the Disney classes. If I want to take online classes, good for me, otherwise, it's just a semester off

Are you going to take the online class? And in your own experience, is the CP gonna affect your graduation date or no? Just curious. :)

I am going to take a couple online classes. As for graduating "on time" I'm a non-traditional student so there is no such thing as on time for me (on time would have been oh, about 10 years ago)

How do you like that major? What do you plan on doing with it?
I really want to work with kids. Is hospitality good for that?

Hospitality has a lot of areas, but other than stuff like child card on cruises, I can't think of much with kiddos

Ah okay, sorry! Thanks so much :)

Well thanks a lot everyone! I really hope I will be CPing in August. I'll be very unhappy if I am rejected.

I graduate next weekend with a Hospitality Management degree.

If you have any questions about the major, let me know. There are lots of opportunities to work around kids, not necessarily with them. For example, a theme park that is geared towards children is where I work (besides Disney) and I am around kids all of the time. Working with them one on one is a lot less though, but you can take advantage of volunteer opportunities such as Give Kids the World at WDW.

my school is being difficult too. they MIGHT give me three credit hours for a marketing class if i get into "marketing you", but if not i'd have to take three credit hours in a hospitality course that doesn't even go towards my transfer degree. UGH! the disney classes aren't guaranteed til you check in so i can't arrange that probably. it's going to be a semester off unless i take an online class which i hate. :sad2:
