My rude bellman at the Poly......

On a lighter note.....my dh is the world's WORST tipper! He is very generous but very bumbling! He would put the bill in his hand and shake the driver's (or 'tipee') hand, well the bill would always fall on the ground. So, I asked him why he did this! He had no reason, he just felt he could be 'discreet'
I said 'No honey, don't do this, it's becoming embarrassing!'
He said 'Should I pull the bill out snap it a couple of times, wave it over my head and announce loudly that 'I am a member of the 'Dis' boards and I am tiping the required $1 to $2 per bag!?'

I think this would be less embarrassing!

I agree with the person who says baggage tipping is overwhelming. But here is what we do: As far as the person who moves it from Towncar to luggage dolly-- usually that person has lots of help-- generally the unloading of luggage is done by that person, my dh, and the towncar driver while I worry about tipping driver and bell person.

I have always considered the tip properly goes to the guy who delivers the cart to the room; however, recognizing that the trunk guy might be a different guy, we usually throw him a couple bucks or more for his trouble, depending on how much help he had from the driver and us.

The guy that brings the stuff to the room always gets at least $10. We have luggage, baby stuff, and small grocery bags, so that is about a dollar a bag. If I feel the guy has gone above and beyond and also if I feel we've been a particular handful, I might give more. When we went to the Poly in September, this guy: moved our luggage from the dolly to the golf cart: a two-three suitcases, one of them huge; a stroller, 3 personal or shoulder bags, and a few small grocery bags. He gave the family a ride in the cart and a mini-resort tour, moved all our luggage upstairs and introduced us to our room. That guy got $15 which I felt was well-deserved.

We are cheapskates! But feel this great service is worth tipping for. The beginning of a vacation is so exhausting and overwhelming.

You CAN skip this dance. On this same trip we splurged and spend A LOT. Then a hurricane cancelled our flight and suddenly we had to stay two more nights at the Poly. Everybody STOP SPENDING NOW! I said to the family. The extra two days were borrowed time so the splurging was over, and we brought our own luggage out to the bellstand this time. Which was a little exhausting, but just wanted to point out, all these services can be refused.

Very easily...You simply tell them you don't need any help. Being local, I drive up in my car, shut and lock the door, go check in and come back out and go on my way. I've never had a problem.

If I were in your shoes (using public transportation to arrive/depart), as I was exiting the vehicle and someone approaches and asks if I need any help (or something of that nature), I would tell them, "No, thanks! The kids and I can handle it" and go about my business.

If you receive a "look" or they make one of those disgusted noises, I'd get the person's name and ask to speak to a manager when you check in.

What still throws me for a loop is ALL the extra stuff I have.....camera bags, lap tops, backpacks, gameboy bags....how do I figure all these items in my tipping..

Yep, its the little stuff that bothers me as well. I bring one of those foldable duffle bags and put it in the zipper pocket of my big suitcase. Then when we get off the airplane I put all the little miscellaneous bags into the duffle. It makes it a bit less obvious that there are camera and gameboys and makes it one bag instead of several.

FWIW I don't do this just for ease in tipping but it just makes the logistics easier as well.

LOL My mind is always playing tricks on me, too! Maybe we should start a thread on how much we'd tip the bellmen if they were nude! At least $5/bag. That could make for fun reading...

Hi all. OP here. I just saw the posts about the "nude" bellman and lost it, lol!! That really would've been something to post about, or maybe not

What is funny is as soon as he counted the money and gave us a "look", my first thought was "wait 'til the disers hear about this" LOL. I was not going to let a rude guy ruin even one minute of the vacation I had planned and saved for for almost a year. I just hope he was having a bad day and isn't always such a jerk, everyone has bad days even in Disney! Everyone else we encountered was nice, at the Poly and at the parks.
