If you remember, the tickets said gates open at 2, be there at 4. We were trying to leave at 2 but as I grabbed a bottle of water I noticed the fridge in the garage was off. DH checked the outlet because he's replaced it once, checked the breaker...turns out our thunderstorm the night before knocked out the GFI by his tool bench, so as soon as he pushed that in everything was fine, although we lost some chicken in the freezer.
We ended up parking about 2:45 and getting to the venue, a historic fort from 1812, at 3. It was already really packed! We found a spot on a little hill, but almost at the bottom as other people were on the middle and top. The problem was that it was kind of slippery because of the rain Friday and Friday night. We sat on our raincoats (my WDW poncho is disgustingly filthy now and may not make it) but when we stood we had a tendency to slip down the hill. I fell on my butt twice and full on my back once, although some people kind of broke my fall. I whacked DD#1 a good one in the nose going down once.
Because of rain on the way up from Lima the President was a little late. However, one surprise was that Lee Ann Womack came in and sang 4 songs--one I didn't know, "Grand Old Flag", "This Land is Your Land", and "I Hope You Dance". It was really cool! We got some good digital shots if we were only a little way up--we had a good spot.
The President got there a little before 6. It was very exciting--about 12,000-15,000 people were there. It was a really partisan crowd, of course, but I double checked and DH did NOT have to sign and promise to vote for Bush. DH took some good shots but we were taking turns standing at the bottom of the hill by that time because it was so slippery and DH's ankles hurt from standing at an angle. DH put DS on his shoulders for a while so he could see and both girls got good views.
We did leave before he was finished to try to "beat the rush"--think of the funnel out of Fantasmic, that is about what we were facing. The cool thing about that was since we left a little early, we were walking down the road and they closed it off. We stopped, and 4 minutes later the busses went right by us and the President was standing in the front window, waving! The kids were ecstatic. It was very cool. Hardly anyone was there because the people from his speech had headed to their cars, or weren't there yet. On TV later it said the road from Lima to Perrysburg was lined with people before he came in.
All in all it was a very neat experience for the kids and I'm very glad we did it.

Thanks for posting! I saw pics on another site and it looked like a good turn out!

Live down the pike from you in southern Ohio. The local media is reporting Bush's mini tour on Saturday generated huge turnouts. He ate lunch at a local burger joint, and peolple lined up and down the streets just to watch his bus go by. Glad you went and it was pouring down rain here around 4:00 yesterday. lol.

 Hi, Robin!
I live in Findlay and knew that the President was going to be in Toledo, however, did not know that he would be passing through here! On my way back from Wal Mart yesterday, my path was blocked. I spotted a girl I go to school with and she told me that he would be passing by on his way to Fostoria. I pulled over and waited to see him drive by. It was a little after 5 when he did and I thought of you and wondered when he'd make it to Toledo. Boy, they must have been booking it to get there before 6! :earseek:
I saw the bus and his entourage (sp?) but can't honestly say that I saw him. I had a good view of the bus but it was really driving fast. He, he...I waited about an hour to see the bus for a few seconds. Needless to say, that was my excitement for the day!::yes::

<font color=navy>What a cool experience! I'm sure your kids will remember this for a long time. :)

Regardless of my political leanings, I wouyld always think it was cool to see any President. It's realy a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Wow ! :hyper: How exiting !!:Pinkbounc :bounce:

President Bush came to my town about 2 weeks ago, and I got to see him.... it was, like you said... very crowded but very fun too.
We stood in the rain for 2 hours waiting for him to get there ....
They passed out noisemakers and pom-poms and it was a giant pep rally...... It was fun shouting "4 more years !"

I am glad you got to experience it !! Thanks for sharing...

Very cool- sounds so exciting! I hope he swings back through Portland and I can go. ::yes::

We saw the "original" President Bush when DS was 3 and DD was 6. DS of course does not remember, but DD still remembers the event to this day (she turned 18 6 months ago and will be voting in her first presidential election this year!).

I'm sure you all will remember this day for a long time to come.

Very neat!

I've gotten to see speeches by Bush I, Clinton and President George W. Bush.

Lee Ann Womack came in and sang 4 songs..."This Land is Your Land"

Did she sing the JibJab.com version? :teeth:

Very cool that you and your kids got to see the President. Thanks for sharing the experience with us. Can't wait to see the pictures.
