If you remember, the tickets said gates open at 2, be there at 4. We were trying to leave at 2 but as I grabbed a bottle of water I noticed the fridge in the garage was off.
DH checked the outlet because he's replaced it once, checked the breaker...turns out our thunderstorm the night before knocked out the GFI by his tool bench, so as soon as he pushed that in everything was fine, although we lost some chicken in the freezer.
We ended up parking about 2:45 and getting to the venue, a historic fort from 1812, at 3. It was already really packed! We found a spot on a little hill, but almost at the bottom as other people were on the middle and top. The problem was that it was kind of slippery because of the rain Friday and Friday night. We sat on our raincoats (my WDW poncho is disgustingly filthy now and may not make it) but when we stood we had a tendency to slip down the hill. I fell on my butt twice and full on my back once, although some people kind of broke my fall. I whacked DD#1 a good one in the nose going down once.
Because of rain on the way up from Lima the President was a little late. However, one surprise was that Lee Ann Womack came in and sang 4 songs--one I didn't know, "Grand Old Flag", "This Land is Your Land", and "I Hope You Dance". It was really cool! We got some good digital shots if we were only a little way up--we had a good spot.
The President got there a little before 6. It was very exciting--about 12,000-15,000 people were there. It was a really partisan crowd, of course, but I double checked and DH did NOT have to sign and promise to vote for Bush. DH took some good shots but we were taking turns standing at the bottom of the hill by that time because it was so slippery and DH's ankles hurt from standing at an angle. DH put DS on his shoulders for a while so he could see and both girls got good views.
We did leave before he was finished to try to "beat the rush"--think of the funnel out of Fantasmic, that is about what we were facing. The cool thing about that was since we left a little early, we were walking down the road and they closed it off. We stopped, and 4 minutes later the busses went right by us and the President was standing in the front window, waving! The kids were ecstatic. It was very cool. Hardly anyone was there because the people from his speech had headed to their cars, or weren't there yet. On TV later it said the road from Lima to Perrysburg was lined with people before he came in.
All in all it was a very neat experience for the kids and I'm very glad we did it.
