My poor computer

I finally got my home pc fixed today by the kind IT blokes at work, the intenal power supply had gone and it had not worked for about a month.

However when I went on it today I was very surprised to see that the history files were absolutely full of p**n sites for the last 3 weeks! I went onto the temp internet files and basically from the day it stopped working someone had somehow been going onto these sites.

My best friend who used to work in IT has just had a look and she said someone has used a backdoor virus to get into my pc and has been using my IP address to get onto these websites! She looked all through the files on my pc and were hundreds of dodgy photos on there that had been saved on there last weekend. She has taken everything off but thinks that the person can probably still get back into my pc (Im just putting virus softward on there now and yes I know I was stupid to not have it!! )

Anyway I feel totally violated, its a horrble feeling to know that someone has been able to get into all my stuff on my computer. Im going to contact Virgin in the morning and see if they will give me a new IP address, don't know if they will?

Jen, how awful, dont know what to advise Im afraid as Im rubbish with computers, but glad you got it back working and hope Virgin can help you out in some way.

They won't be able to give out a new IP address as they are set on the actual phone line

I don't know much about computers but I think you need a firewall as well as your anti-virus. Someone on these boards should be able to advise you.

Thats horrible, If you are on Virgin broadband, I have heard that if your unplug the modem for a while when you switch it back on it will change your IP address. I'm not sure if it works it is what I have heard.

Also make sure you do a complete virus scan of your harddrive once you have installed your software before you go back on the internet.

Someone I work with was telling me you can buy a form of software that changes your IP address constantly, she has it as she sells on Ebay, I don't know what it is called though.

You need to get rid of the virus as that is what is broadcasting your IP for these people to use it.

Do you have a firewall of any sorts either as part of your broadband hardware or as software on your machine?
