I have an "uncle" (I use that term loosely as he isn't a blood relative) who dropped out of a Ph.D program, although I believe he got his masters while there. He said that his faculty advisor didn't like him. He ended up getting a job where he was pretty successful for a few years. He eventually returned because a different faculty advisor was interested. After his Ph.D he ended up working at the same company for over 30 years before retiring.Even if you decide not to return to the program, you may be able to salvage a neutral or positive parting of the ways, which will serve you better in the future, whether you attempt to continue academic studies elsewhere or in the non-academic world. "Have you ever been dismissed" is not a question you want to have to answer "yes" to.
