My PC, GF, VWL, BCV, VWL, and SSR vacation…

All our bags were packed and were ready to go. My husband loaded them into the car and away we went. We soon arrived at the airport and checked those bags. When it came time to go through Security, that is when our fun began.

You see, my husband has the habit of traveling with something in his pockets or on his person that is bound to set off the airport’s metal detectors. Without fail. Today was no exception.

As he approached the entrance to the metal detector, my husband decided to use his head. Into a plastic bin he placed the keys from his pockets, the coins from his pockets, and the lint from his pockets. He was taking no chances that he was going to set off any alarms today. And before he attempted to step through that metal detector, he remembered to remove one last item from his person – his belt. Into the plastic bin it went.

As my husband stepped through the metal detector, wouldn’t you know it, he set off the alarms. Surprise. Surprise. I snickered and under my breath told him that it was time for his strip-search. He didn’t appreciate my comment, but, hey, payback’s a b%#@&. [In my best Snidely Whiplash voice:] “Hee, hee, hee!”

Two years ago, my underwire brassiere had set off the airport's metal detector as my daughter and I began our first Walt Disney World Mother & Daughter Vacation. As my little escapade was happening, my daughter pretty much just about pee’d her pants with laughter as she watched Mommy get felt-up in public by a Security person. I must admit that it was quite a sight to see me standing there, spread-eagled, as a stranger got more personal with me than any stranger had been since my wild & crazy days as a college sorority girl. Needless to say, I passed my little test with flying colors and was allowed to proceed to my airplane. My daughter and I laughed about the incident our entire vacation.

Since that was strictly a Mother & Daughter Vacation, my husband wasn’t with us, but he did hear all about my little run-in with Security upon my return home. It’s been a running joke for us ever since: “Hey, Janet, do you have your lethal weapon strapped to your chest?” Or, ”Hey, Janet, you better be licensed to wear that thing.” Husbands, sheesh.

But now it was my turn to pay him back, ”Hey, dear, since you’ve just set off the airport security alarms, get ready for the strip search!” Oh, yeah. I could tell this was going to be a fun start to our vacation.

My husband looked at the Security Guard and shrugged his shoulders. He honestly didn’t know what was setting off the alarm. The Guard asked him to step into the area where he could be scanned by a handheld metal detector.
It was at that point that I realized that I shouldn’t have been laughing so hard at my husband’s plight. I had a metal plate, various screws, and a wire in my leg. If my husband had set off the metal detector with some unknown amount of metal on his person, what was my bionic leg going to make that metal detector do – play the “Star-Spangled Banner?” Yikes!

As my husband was being scanned in the secure area, I alerted the metal detector operator that I was probably going to set it off too since I had metal hardware in my leg. The Security Guard nodded at me asked me to step through the metal detector. I waited for the national anthem to be played.

What was that I heard? The sound of silence? The machine surely must be broken. But my husband had just set it off so I knew it was working. I could not believe that my leg had not set it off. Or, for that matter, my bra. Happy days were here again!

I gathered my items from the X-ray machine and walked over to where my husband was secured. He looked at me in amazement since he had just seen that I did not set off the alarm. I laughed. And then laughed some more. The Security Guard told my husband to remove his shoes. Those shoes were taken to the X-ray machine and x-rayed not once but twice. My husband sat there in silence and waited. When Security was finally satisfied that his shoes contained no dangerous materials, my husband was allowed to put them back on. He was free to go. As we walked towards our gate, my daughter and I chuckled about our guy with the lethal shoes. My husband wasn’t going to live that one down, no sir-ee.

When we arrived at our gate, we saw that its departure had been pushed back by 15 minutes. No big deal. Or so we thought.

As the minutes ticked by on the clock, so did the minutes that our departure was being pushed back. It was pushed back by 30 minutes. Then 60 minutes. An announcement came over the P.A. speakers that no flights heading to Chicago were being allowed to depart any airport within the United States. The Chicago area airports were shut down due to severe thunderstorm activity.

Whenever I book a flight to Florida, I make sure that it’s not routed through an area of the country where the possibility of a missed connection is high. For example, when we’re flying in the wintertime, I make sure we’re not routed through Denver, Salt Lake City, Chicago, and any number of other cities where snowstorms are likely. Since we were traveling in late spring this time, I only gave a passing thought to our connecting city. I thought we’d have a decent shot of making that flight no matter where we were routed, so when Chicago came up as our connecting city, I didn’t pay much attention. In hindsight, that was a big mistake.

The Chicago-O'Hare International Airport is the second busiest passenger airport in the world. (It held the Number One title until Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport became the world's busiest passenger airport in 1998.) I had been flying in, out, and through O’Hare International Airport since I first began traveling as a young girl (yes, airports did exist when dinosaurs were roaming the Earth, I don’t care what my husband says). I was familiar with O’Hare and its many travel delays due to weather. But I had been living on the West Coast for centuries now, where thunder and lightning storms are so rare that they usually make the newspaper’s front page when they do occur. I sadly had forgotten to consider the possibility of an airport being shut down due to severe thunderstorms. Believe me, if I can help it, I won’t make that same mistake again.

And so we sat there. On the West Coast. In the gate area. As the minutes turned into hours. It was excruciating painful to my daughter, my husband, and myself. We were very anxious for our vacation to begin. We didn’t want to spend one more minute at home, but there was nothing that we could do except to keep our eyes fixated on the departure monitor. Arg!

Since we were going to miss our connecting flight once we arrived in Chicago, I asked the ticket agent if she could put us on a latter flight. She told me that there was one more flight out of O’Hare that night that was heading to Orlando, but we didn’t need to change our flight because our connecting flight was being held up on the West Coast too. That plane, as well as our plane, could not leave our airports until the FAA had re-opened O’Hare airport. Her explanation sounded plausible to me and so I did not push the issue of booking the later flight out of Chicago.

After waiting approximately three hours, we were allowed to board our plane. Yahoo! We were on our way. Finally.

Our flight to Chicago was uneventful. I had expected a lot of turbulence as we approached the Midwest but there was none. What a pleasant surprise. Our landing was smooth, and as our plane taxied to our gate, I noticed that the ground was completely dry and the sun was shining. Was this the same airport that had been shut down earlier today due to severe thunder and lightning storms? If I hadn’t seen notice of the airport’s closure on the national news that morning, I wouldn’t have believed it. It was a gorgeous day in Chicago.

As you have obviously figured out by now, due to our late arrival, we had missed our connecting flight. I found out that it actually had departed only 30 minutes late. The airline had substituted another plane to take its place. I tried not to let the missed connection worry me.

As I approached the first ticket counter that I found, I produced my family’s tickets and ID’s. I asked the ticket agent to please book us on the last flight to Orlando. When she checked her computer, she found that we had automatically been re-booked on that flight. I was relieved to learn that. I had been afraid that if that flight were too full, we would have to wait until the next morning for a flight to Orlando. That would have meant that we would have missed the Family Magic Tour with Floridafam’s family. Luckily, I didn’t have to worry about that because my family had seats on the last flight out that night. ~Phew!~

We were hungry, so we purchased some sandwiches and drinks as we waited for our connecting flight. We had about a 90-minute wait and it passed quickly. Soon we were boarding our plane. Our excitement grew as we found our seats.

Within 20 minutes, everyone had boarded. The cabin doors were secured, and we waited for pushback. 5 minutes passed. Then 10. Then 15. Then 20. We finally were given permission to pushback.

Our plane taxied towards the runway. At O’Hare, that takes a long time. It’s one busy place. After approximately 20 minutes, we were at the end of the runway. And so we sat. And sat. And sat. I noticed that the weather outside had turned slightly ominous. It wasn’t raining, but the clouds had moved in and were darkening. It looked like another storm was on its way. I wondered what was going to happen to us. Would we be allowed to leave? Would we be told to return to the terminal?

After 20 minutes had passed, my worrying came to an end. The pilot announced over the speakers that we were just given permission to takeoff. I let out a huge ~sigh~ as our plane made its way down the runway. As soon as the nose cone was in the air, I relaxed. I had begun to think that this moment would never arrive. I quickly realized that within a few hours, we would be in Orlando. All was good. I didn’t know how good until another 20 minutes had passed. The pilot came back on the speakers and stated that O’Hare International Airport had been shut down again shortly after we had departed. I silently thanked the Lord Above for the small window of opportunity that he had granted to our plane only twenty minutes prior. Yes, all was right with the world, we were finally on our way.

Janet...I just found your report...this dinner party is truly amazing...makes me want to plan one of my own.....Sounds so magical....

The details are wonderful..thanks so much for sharing..

Can't wait for the rest

I absolutely love reading your trip reports! Janet2K you are so funny. I especially loved the sorority girl comment...been there, done that too!

Thanks for all the kind things you have said about the military. My husband retired after 26 years in the USMC and we have so many friends in Iraq. I will pray for your friend and her family.

Anyway, you manage to take us along on your adventures and I appreciate that. I can't wait for your next installment.

All the best!

The title of this post, "Day 1: Pop Century," is a bit of the following:

ox·y·mo·ron
(Merriam-Webster OnLine Dictionary)
Pronunciation: "äk-sE-'mor-"än
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural ox·y·mo·ra /-'mor-&/
Etymology: Late Greek oxymOron, from neuter of oxymOros pointedly foolish, from Greek oxys sharp, keen + mOros foolish
: a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness); broadly : something (as a concept) that is made up of contradictory or incongruous elements

Can you call something “Day 1” when you arrive only minutes before the clock strikes midnight and the next day begins? I guess if you're judging on strictly technical grounds, the title is okay. Still, I feel a little sly using it. Oh, well. A girl’s gotta start somewhere, and she might as well start at the beginning, so “Day 1” it is…

Our flight to Orlando was nice and boring. We didn’t encounter any turbulence, which is always a good thing. My only complaint about the flight was that due to all the weather-related travel delays earlier that day, we were arriving in Florida a few hours behind schedule.

That evening we should have arrived in Orlando while the sun was still up (7 PM). Instead, we found ourselves landing in the moonlight (10:30 PM). I was a little disappointed because that meant we wouldn’t have much time, if any, to explore the Pop Century Resort. However, I kept my disappointment from my husband and daughter. We were in Orlando, after all, and I had no right to complain.

After we gathered our luggage together, there was an issue with our pre-arranged ground transportation. We found ourselves hailing a taxicab. We requested a van and got one. Our driver was very nice and talked to us as he drove us to Walt Disney World. That cab ride cost approximately $42 (plus tip).

As our cab pulled up in front of the Pop Century Resort, I began to get excited. Things suddenly felt very real to me and I finally felt like I was on vacation. I love feeling that way, ~sigh.~

This would be my family’s very first Value Resort stay. Since the Pop Century Resort was Disney’s newest, we thought it would be fun to give it a try. (I should note that we plan on trying all three of the All Stars Resorts, too.)

A Pop Century Cast Member greeted our taxi and told us how the check-in process worked. He said that if we needed help getting our luggage to our room, we could borrow one of the handcarts, but it would require a draft of our credit card ($250). My husband gave him our credit card, the Cast Member took a draft, we put our luggage on the cart, and we were on our way.

We went inside the resort to check-in. We really liked the design of the lobby area. We inspected some of the wall art displays and found they brought back fond memories of the different eras that we had ~gasp~ lived through so far. (Note: Here is the link to the Pop Century photos that are found here on the Dis: click here. There are some wonderful photos in there.)

I noticed that there were approximately five families waiting in line to check-in, so we walked over and stood in the queue behind them. There were at least four Cast Members working the Front Desk that night. By this point in time, it was approximately 11:30 PM. I knew the food court would close at midnight, so I sent my husband and daughter to get something to eat. I asked them to get me a "TV Dinner" (click here) and a soft drink. I told them I’d join them as soon as I had checked in. Away they went with the luggage.

Since I had never stayed in a Value Resort before, I had wondered what sort of age groups normally stayed there. I figured that my husband and I would probably be some of the oldest guests, but as I stood in line, I realized that there was one couple younger than I was (they were honeymooning, I believe), and the other four families were either extremely close to my age or older. I don’t know if that was the norm, that was just my observation at almost midnight on a Friday night.

Within fifteen minutes, I found myself at the head of the line. A very nice Cast Member checked me in and made me feel right at home. I produced my photo ID and my credit card, and she issued me my room keys.

I had booked only a standard view room (a.k.a., parking lot view); however, the Cast Member told me that I had been “upgraded” to a lovely pool view room in one of the 1960’s building. I told her that I didn’t need the upgraded room because my family was transferring to another Disney resort the next morning, but she just smiled. I smiled back and thanked her. She then said, “Now, wait right here. I have to go to the back room. There’s something back there that I need to get.” With that, she disappeared.

As I stood at the Front Desk, I saw from my watch that it was midnight. I was worried about how I was going to get into the food court since I could see that they had just locked the doors. I didn’t understand why the Cast Member went to the back room as I wasn’t expecting anything. So I stood at the Front Desk and watched the other people checking in. Everyone looked fairly chipper for the middle of the night. I, on the other hand, was definitely slipping into zombie mode.

Within a few minutes, I saw someone exit the back room. Their arms were full. It was then that I noticed it was my Cast Member. She was carrying two gift baskets and some helium balloons. I let out a laugh as Floridafam’s last e-mail message suddenly came to mind:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have a safe trip and I hope you get to Pop Century safely and are able to enjoy the resort for a while. I left a note for you at check-in so don't leave the front desk until you pick it up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Oh, that devilish Mata Hari! I couldn’t believe how sneaky she had been, and she had pulled it off, too. I was completely touched by her generosity as the Cast Member placed the two beautiful gift baskets on the counter before me. The gift baskets had obviously been put together by the Walt Disney World Florist. They were lovely.

This photo (click here) shows the two gift baskets sitting side-by-side. The basket on the left contained various pieces of fruit: apple, pear, grapes, etc. The basket on the right contained all sorts of other goodies: plush Mickey and Minnie dolls, a scented candle in an etched glass with a Mickey head topper, a huge box of assorted Disney chocolates, several bottles of water, a bag of pretzels, etc. This photo (click here) shows the brightly-colored, helium balloons that accompanied the gift baskets (there was one more balloon but it popped before this photo was taken).

After I had received delivery of my gorgeous gift baskets, it was time to find my husband and daughter. It was after midnight now. As I walked towards the food court carrying my baskets and trailing my balloons behind me, my daughter spotted me (it was hard to miss me). She led me outside the building and to a door that allowed us entry into the locked food court. We found my husband sitting inside. He asked me who the gift baskets were from and I let him read the gift card. He was as touched by Floridafam’s generosity as I was. My daughter, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to tear open the gift basket that contained the Minnie & Mickey plush dolls. I wouldn’t let her touch it. We were transferring resorts within a few hours and I wanted the gift baskets intact for luggage transferring purposes. I told my daughter that she would just have to wait. She gave me her saddest, puppy dog eyes in an attempt to get me to change my mind, but I wouldn’t budge. And so we placed the gift baskets on the luggage cart and she continued to drool over them.

I was sad to see that the dinner that my husband had purchased for me wasn’t a TV dinner. He told me that they had run out of them. The meal was good but I wasn’t very hungry, just tired. I ate a couple of bites, and then it was time to head outside in search of our resort room. My husband pushed the luggage cart behind me, with our daughter making sure the gift baskets didn't fall.

It was a beautiful Florida night, probably in the low 80’s. We had no idea where we were going so my husband asked a Cast Member where our room was located. He pointed us in the right direction and we soon found it.

Our resort room was located in one of the 1960’s buildings. If you view this map, our room was located in the ‘60’s building that is marked with a “B” (click here). Our room was actually at the end of the building that is the closest to the “Classic Hall” building.

Our building was decorated with people dancing what appeared to be the twist (click here). "5161" was our room number (click here). It was easy to find since it was a corner room on the first floor (click here). And it was in a prime location, too, located directly in front of the Hippy Dippy Pool (click here) and only a short walk from the lobby (Classic Hall). I was thankful for the short walk since it was quickly approaching 1 o’clock in the morning and my leg was swollen.

We entered our room (click here), unloaded our luggage, and then my husband went to return the luggage cart. I thought this would be a good time to take some photos of our room so I grabbed my camera and began snapping away.

This photo (click here) shows the entrance to our room. Our room had two double beds (click here). On one bed my daughter placed the Pal Mickey that she had received from Nutz4dzny during our last vacation. My daughter told me that Mickey felt right at home, and she begged me to let her get the Mickey & Minnie dolls from the gift basket that Floridafam had given to us. I wouldn’t let her touch the gift basket for obvious reasons (nice try, though, kiddo – I like your tenacity).

The room had a “pop culture” theme to it that was carried out in the bedspreads (click here), the wall border, and the wall art (click here). The room was tastefully decorated and I liked it.

Between the beds was a nightstand that contained a telephone with voicemail and a digital alarm clock radio (click here). Across from the beds sat a table and two chairs (click here), and also an entertainment/storage unit (click here). I really liked the colors of the wood that were used in the furniture. Everything looked great.

At the back of the room were the vanity and bathroom areas (click here). The back of the bathroom door had a full-length mirror on it (click here). I thought that was a great touch – very handy for when you are dressing. The bathroom itself was compact and I liked the colors of the tile that were used (click here).

The vanity area contained a single-basin sink (click here). On the left of this area was a clothes rod that contained several wooden hangers (click here). There was a shelf above it for additional storage. There was also an iron and ironing board (click here). If you had any valuables to store, the wall safe was located here, too (click here). It was deep enough to hold a checkbook and tall enough to possibly fit a laptop.

With our room photos out of the way, my daughter and I decided to take a quick walk around the resort complex. We brought our camera with us and snapped a few pictures:

During our walk, we discovered that the Hippy Dippy Pool was closed for the night. The two of us really enjoy midnight swims, but with the pool closed, there wouldn’t be any swimming tonight. We were sad over that fact. In order to cheer ourselves up, we decided that we’d just have to stay at the Pop Century again when we had more time to devote to the resort.

By the time we made it back to our room, it was well after 1:30 AM. We quickly changed into our pajamas and hit the bed. My daughter won the race to fall asleep. No sooner had her head hit the pillow than she was fast asleep. My husband came in second place but by only an eyelash. Me, on the other hand, completely lost the race. I was so tired (and my leg was bothering me) that my mind would not shut down. It was racing ahead at full speed.

There were too many things to worry about. We had a wakeup call scheduled in four hours (6 AM)... We had to shower and dress, and then bring our luggage to the front of the resort where we would hail a taxicab... That taxi would take us to the Grand Floridian Resort where we would drop off our luggage with Bell Services and then proceed to the Front Desk for check-in... Once checked in, we would take a monorail to the Magic Kingdom Theme Park where we had to show up at the Will Call window in order to pick up our Annual Passes that had been purchased via the Internet only a few days before... We had to validate our Annual Passes, then get inside the Magic Kingdom and find City Hall... Once at City Hall, we had to find the Tour Garden where we would wait for Floridafam and her children to arrive... Our families had never met before, but we had seen photos of each other on the Internet... We were sharing the Family Magic Tour together (Floridafam was graciously treating us to it), and we were really looking forward to it... After the tour, we were lunching at the Plaza Restaurant... Once lunch was over, we would go our separate ways... My family would head back to the Grand Floridian to see if our room was ready... If it was, we would have Bell Services deliver our luggage, and if time permitted, we would take a quick swim, and then head back to the room to shower and dress for our meeting with the Convention Services Cast Member... We had an appointment at the Summerhouse beach area at 4 PM... We were going to do a walk-through of the Summerhouse and the marina areas in preparation for our dinner party that was scheduled for the following evening...

I think it was at that point that my head exploded. I have no idea what time it was. When I had last checked, it was around 4 AM. I guess somewhere between 4 AM and 6 AM, I got to take a Power Nap. Whoever said vacations were for relaxing was lying. My vacation was starting out anything but relaxing. And, gee whiz, this was only its first day.

GREAT, GREAT report! I'm so excited for the next installment. What beautiful gifts left for you by floridafam. Precious!

Oh, that devilish Mata Hari!

:p

Janet, I'm so glad you received the baskets.

Had I known about your late arrival, I would have done the tour on a different day. I can't believe you only had a few hours of sleep. I would have been so cranky but Janet and her family showed up with all smiles on and ready to go.

:sunny:

Ok..bumping this back up to the top.....anxious to read more installments...to hear how the tour and dinner party went....OK, enough begging...but really looking forward to the next installment...please!

Enjoying your report....and all the planning details!

RING! RING! RING!

Oh, no. It couldn’t be time to wake up already, could it be? It seemed like only minutes ago (120 minutes, to be exact) that I had fallen asleep in my Pop Century Resort room. I didn’t dream of sugarplums that night. On the contrary, I dreamed of nothing, absolutely nothing. There wasn't enough time to dream of anything. And now Mickey Mouse was whispering into my ear that it was time to get my weary body out of bed. I ask you, is there no rest for the wicked? Obviously not when one is vacationing in Walt Disney World.

Once my eyes began to focus, I saw that the clock was stating 6 AM. I decided to lie in bed for another 15 minutes. Eventually, there was no denying the fact that I had to get up, even though my body was still on West Coast time (3 AM). ARG!

Within an hour, my family was ready and rarin’ to go. Okay, so maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit on the rarin’ part, but heck, this is my post and I can write what I want to.

My family needed to be inside the Magic Kingdom Theme Park by 9:45 AM in order to check in for the Family Magic Tour. Our tour was slated to begin promptly at 10 AM. Floridafam was treating my family to the tour and we were very excited about it. It was going to be an incredible day, I just knew it.

We took our luggage to the front of the Pop Century around 7:30 AM. I inquired at the Luggage Assistance Stand for Chip 'n Dale Express. I knew he was going to be working that morning and I wanted to say hello. When I asked for him, I was sad to learn that he was out on a luggage run (he was training someone that morning). Since I didn’t have any time to spare before I transferred to my next resort, I left him a note saying, ”Hello from Janet2k.” (When I returned home from my vacation, I was happy to learn that he had received my note. Chip ‘n Dale Express is such a wonderful member of the Dis Community, that I hope to meet him someday.)

Since my family never has a car while vacationing at Walt Disney World, I asked the Luggage Assistance folks to hail us a taxicab. They did and the cab arrived within a few minutes. We loaded our luggage into it and away we went.

Several minutes later, we were at the Grand Floridian Resort. My husband checked our luggage with the Bell Services folks while I went inside to check in at the Front Desk. Since it was early morning (8 AM), the Front Desk was not very busy and my wait in line was non-existent.

While I was checking in, I was told that my room was not ready yet. That was no surprise to me since it was still very early in the morning (8 AM) and check-in isn’t officially until 3 PM. The Cast Member told me that if I needed a room now, one could be provided to me. However, he thought I should wait for the room that had been assigned to me since he knew I was going to like it. I told him that I would wait because my family had to be at the Magic Kingdom Theme Park as quickly as possible and we didn’t need a room until the afternoon. Out of curiosity, though, I asked him what building my room was located in. He said, “Conch Key.” That made me very happy because that is my favorite Grand Floridian building. He then told me that my room had a Magic Kingdom view. I told him that I had only booked a Garden View room. He stated that my family had been upgraded. What a lovely surprise. My family had been upgraded at the Pop Century just the night before, and now we were being upgraded at the Grand Floridian Resort. I wondered if life got any better than this.

Once our check-in had been completed, room cards were issued, and my family was quickly on its way to the Magic Kingdom.

As you know, the question at hand was the following: “Did life get any better than this?” I would be inclined to say that it didn’t; however, I was proven wrong as my family stepped onto the Grand Floridian’s monorail platform.

There wasn’t a monorail in sight, so my daughter asked if we could ride in front on the next one. The Cast Member said that he would look into it for her when the monorail arrived.

Within a few minutes, my daughter had her answer: yes. She was told that the front cab was all hers. You should have seen the smiles upon all of our faces (click here). We had only been in Walt Disney World for eight hours and yet the magic was raining down all around us: an upgrade at the Pop Century, two gorgeous gift baskets from Floridafam, an upgrade at the Grand Floridian, and now a front cab ride in the monorail. We could have died right then and there a happy family. Life just did not get any better than this. Or did it?

After our short ride to the Magic Kingdom, we were given honorary monorail licenses as we exited the front cab. What a thrill that was, especially for my daughter. We thanked our monorail driver and we happily skipped away. What a magical way to start our vacation.

It was 8:30 AM and we were right on schedule. We walked over to the Will Call window and stood in line. Within a few minutes, we had picked up our Annual Passes. It was now 8:45 AM and there were only 15 minutes left before the Magic Kingdom opened.

My family had never been at any theme park right at its opening time, so this was a new experience for us. Since it was Saturday morning, the entrance area to the Magic Kingdom was filled with many guests who were waiting to enter the theme park. It was then that we noticed the opening ceremony was beginning on the train station’s platform above us. We had heard about this ceremony before but had never experienced it. We were in for a pleasant treat.

The Mayor of the Magic Kingdom appeared on the train station’s platform. He welcomed everyone to the theme park (click here). Soon, there was singing and dancing on the platform. Within minutes, the train arrived (click here) and it was filled with lots of Disney characters. Mickey got out and stood next to the Mayor. Together, the two of them waved to the crowd below (click here). The rest of the characters exited the train (click here). They assembled on the platform and waved to the crowd, too (click here).

It was then that the honorary family of the day was announced (click here). Their job was to officially open the Magic Kingdom Theme Park. My, what a thrill that must have been for them. They were just beaming from ear to ear (if you look closely at the photograph, you will see a huge smile upon the dad’s face – I think he got the biggest kick out of them all). Their smiles were so contagious that I caught their joy. As I stood amongst the crowd that morning, I was thankful that Floridafam had invited my family on the Family Magic Tour. If she hadn’t, we would have missed out on the theme park’s opening ceremony. It really was a magical event and a wonderful way to start the day.

Once the ceremony had ended, the theme park was declared officially open and the crowds were let inside. My family held back for a little bit so as not to get lost in the shuffle.

As we entered the Magic Kingdom, we soon found ourselves on Main Street. There were approximately 35 minutes left before we had to meet for the tour. Since my daughter hadn’t had anything to eat that morning, I thought it best if I got something into her belly. We didn’t know what restaurant, if any, was open so we began walking down Main Street.

The temperature was already in the mid-80’s. The projected high for the day was in the low-90’s. Coming from the West Coast, my family just wasn’t used to such heat (we had left 60-degree weather behind us). I wanted to make sure that none of us got heatstroke (click here) that day and decided to buy some bottled water in order to keep everyone properly hydrated.

You see, several years prior, my son had passed out during a WDW vacation. Luckily, he was only unconscious for less than a minute and there was no damage. That memory, however, has remained with me always. I did not want history repeating itself on this vacation. With that said, we made our way to the Main Street Bakery and purchased bananas and water. I made my daughter eat two bananas and drink almost an entire bottle of water. Once she had done so, I was satisfied and we headed to City Hall for our tour.

As we walked to City Hall, a Disney dignitary stopped my husband and stated the following: “Sir, someone from the Polynesian Resort is looking for you.” My husband and I wondered who that could be because Floridafam was staying at the Wilderness Lodge not the Polynesian. The dignitary continued on, “They said they are going to arrest you because you have stolen the drapes from their resort.” And with that he pointed at my husband’s Hawaiian shirt (click here) and walked away.

I never laughed so hard! I thought it was too funny. My husband, being the shy guy that he is, was embarrassed. I assured him that the dignitary meant no harm, he was only teasing him in jest. At that, my husband relaxed and began chuckling: ”The Polynesian is going to arrest you because you have stolen their drapes.” Too funny. Just too funny.

We laughed all the way to City Hall. Once there, we went inside and asked where we were supposed to meet for the Family Magic Tour. They pointed us in the correct direction and we went outside to the garden to wait for our tour to begin.

Had our magic ended for the day? Could life get any better than it already was? Just wait.

Janet2K: Thank you for these wonderful trip reports. I find myself eager to read each of the latest installments. It does add to the pleasure of my own planning process which is so humble compared to all you created for this trip.

Oh Janet! I'm absolutely loving your report! I'm planning a big family trip in 2005 and am gathering lots of ideas from you! Thanks for posting all the little details too. Your style is fantastic! Can't wait for more!! :bounce: :bounce:

This trip report reminds me of one of those old fashion radio serials my Nana told us about. How the family would eagerly await each week what would happen next. And they would always leave you breathlessly waiting... asking yourself what happened next?? Stay tuned fellow Dis 'ers...

Too funny about the shirt (your DD is adorable - I can't wait for her to be surprised about Mickey coming to your party.)

I just read this whole thread in one sitting. Wonderful!!!! You have given me some great ideas for future trips. Thanks for taking the time to share your trip with us. ::yes::

And the part about the shirt and stolen drapes?? I LOL big time over that!! Too funny! :hyper:

Janet,

You can subscribe to threads, but unfortunately you can't subscribe to people...

I haven't been over to the Trip Reports board for several months, but when I saw "Ron from Michigan"'s message (on your previous report thread) that you had a new trip report, I hustled right over here and spent much of the morning reading it. I was supposed to be working!

My first thought was: "Only 8 pages?! That's not going to leave much room for replies!" :teeth: And it's not even finished yet! When I saw the posting date of June 14, I thought I'd missed it all, but not so! I'm looking forward to what remains, and it looks like it will be a lot.

Believe me I know how much time it's taking you to compose these reports, based on my experience posting my own somewhat-lengthy-but-otherwise-ordinary reports. It's a remarkable labor of love, for people you will never meet! I wish I could think of something to say other than "Thank you, you're wonderful!". But I can't.
