My office is going "green"....

In an effort to be more green, my office is no longer buying the disposable cups for coffee and are encouraging everyone to bring and use their own cup or use one of the many that are at the office.

They've also asked that you put your cup in one of the two dishwashers as they'll be running both of them nightly. :confused3

Going "green" means running a dishwasher nightly? Hmmm.... Well, if it makes them feel better... :hyper:

Years ago (in CA no less) I stayed at a extended stay hotel (with a kitchen) that wanted you to run the dishwasher daily. Sometimes there were just 3 or 4 things in it.

I suppose running the dishwasher on a full load is probably using less energy than everyone in the office running hot water in the bathroom sink and trying to wash their mugs?

I think it's great that they are eliminating wasteful cups, I am always looking for new ways to become "greener", but the dishwasher thing does seem a bit odd. I'd rather just bring my mug home and wash it myself. :)

I think it's a great idea. It's not just about the cup ending up in a landfill, although that's a major part, I'm sure. When you consider all of the resources it took to make the cup, get it packaged, ship it, etc, running a dishwasher is probably the lesser of 2 evils. Of course, it makes the most sense if the dishwaser is full when it's turned on. I say KUDOS to the office for making an effort to go GREEN! :thumbsup2

There is NO WAY those dishwashers are anywhere near full every day.

I just checked one of our dishwashers - it was still pretty warm as it had recently finished a wash. There were 5 coffee mugs and 1 glass in it.

We have at least two dishwashers there may be 1 or 2 more in other kitchens that I don't frequent.

I wish my office was a little more green.

My daughter goes to a "green" college. When she goes to a school even, she carried her own mug with her because the college doesn't provide cups for drinks even though they do provide the drinks.

But then what are you supposed to do if you want a coffee refill? You would still be using the hot water to wash it in between drinks, no? So why do they need to run it in the dishwasher?

We have a dishwasher in our office and we run it maybe once or twice a week. That being said, we have plenty of cups, glasses, plates and silverware for our agents. We have a big lunch for everyone every other week or so and it's nice to have real dishes instead of disposable. We also have a great water purifier/cooler from Costco that's made by Brita. You just fill up the huge jug, put it on top and it filters through to give you cold water or Hot! No more bottled water!! :cheer2:

I've always had my own mug for work coffee, I hate the disposable ones. But I would just rinse it out myself and leave it on my desk, I'm not that anal about my coffee mug being clean....a good rinse is good enough for me.

I have a mug for work. I rinse it out daily and take it home every weekend to run through the dishwasher. Works for me.

I suspect that it is possibly necessary to do this because so many people will just leave a dirty cup sitting in a sink somewhere for the dishwashing fairy to clean for them; very common at some workplaces (like food theft- don't even get me started on THAT one!).
