My nephew ships out on Tuesday

My nephew, Michael (21) ships out for Kuwait on Tuesday. He is on the National Guard in Illinois. He will be guarding the border. He will not be on a base, but near one. He is very excited, but by sister is not handling well.

Please pray for him and all our other armed forces over seas, as well as my sister and all other family that is left stateside.

I do not understand why a member of the National Guard would be sent to Kuwait....??? I was under the assumption that the National Guard's duties were in the US...
I have yet to figure out the sensibility of any of this..

Mamajoan-the National Guard has two missions-a state mission which they fulfill by assisting with riots, wildfires, floods and what ever else the Governor of a state may need them for and a Federal Mission-all National Guard units are a part of the military reserve system and many units critical to fighting are in the National Guard rather than the active components-in many cases the citizen solider is the backbone of the force!

During Desert Storm 257,000 of the troops sent to the Middle east were reserve components-and more than half of that number were Guardsmen. National Guard units supply 100% of the current Siani peacekeeping force and on any day, even before September 11 and the increase in homeland security there were about 60,000 National Guard troops on active duty world wide.

I will keep him and all service personnel in my prayers. Tell his mother I understand how she feels. My son is in Kuwait. He has 2 small children and expecting the third. He was suppose to be home in March, but now we aren't sure when he will come home. We just hope its before the baby comes. It is hard on the families, but just as hard on the ones who are there. I know as a mother I feel I must protect my children, but in this I have no control. If his mother would like to talk sometime just PM me and I would be glad to have a talk with her. Only another mother who has a child over there,can truly understand what she is going through.
