My Mom wants to shop?!

My mom, who is SO unbelievably generous and helpful to our family, is coming with us to Disney! I'm trilled - she will love seeing her grandsons enjoy WDW and no doubt spoil them rotten!

Thing is... she just called from work and said that she wants to go to Orlando Premium Outlets and do some shopping (for the boys for xmas). We DO have one "free" day planned and the cab fare would be $31 each way. But I really didn't want to waste our free day shopping (and I'm a HUGE shopper myself) but I don't want to say no - and she would not go by herself nor would I let her!

Should I just go with her and leave the kids with DH or take the whole family???

If you have to take a cab, I'm assuming you are flying. So maybe you could gently point out that it will be difficult and expensive to get your purchases home if you have to check or ship additional luggage/boxes. I too love to shop for the "sport" of it, but I can't imagine you'll save much overall after paying for the cab and overweight luggage fees. Maybe you could suggest a half day at DTD instead? They will ship purchases home for you. Then you could spend the rest of the day at the pool or in the room relaxing.

If your mom is intent on going to the outlet mall, I'd suggest you go with her and leave the rest of the family at the resort. I'd imagine you'll all enjoy your day a little more that way. ;)

If you feel anything like we feel when it comes to our free day, you will not want to go shopping all day. Our free day is for relaxation....sleeping in, swimming, etc. The last thing I want to do is walk around a shopping complex. I would plan on doing the shopping trip with just your mom, but would let it be known that depending on how all of you feel, that you might nix that side trip and sip a lovely drink poolside instead.

I would get up early with my Mom and run over there quickly. You could be back by lunch and still have most of the day to spend with your family (and hopefully relax).

You may also point out that it would take some awfully good bargains to save more than the $70+ cab fare it is going to cost going to the outlets. Plus pointing out the getting stuff home, and being tired.

Is there an outlet center near or nearish to your home that you could plan a day that you and your Mom could go to this fall?

If you have to go Yes leave everyone else at the resort! I could only imagine the grief you would get from your DH and kids if they had to tromp around stores vs pool time at Disney!

I think I will definitely play up the cab fare (ouch!) and offer to go Black Friday Shopping with her in Maine - much better deals
I'll call her tonight and talk about it :scared1:

If that is the only request she has made, I would try to accomidate her. Share with her the cab cost and if she still wants to go I would find something for the guys to do and plan a mom and me shop time. Be sure and tell her about Downtown disney. Certainly not outlets but more fun and a lot easier.

I'm from NH and have shopped at the Kitterly Outlet Malls and at the Tilton (NH) Outlet Mall. We went to the Orlando one (we were there for 16 days and had a car). I really didn't see anything there that was any different than what I could buy at home. Actually, I thought our prices were better. DD ended up getting a couple of tops and I got DS a pair of board shorts, but that was it. I would suggest that you and your mom plan to make a day of shopping in Kittery after you get back.

I don't know what to tell you about your mom, but I have a hard time believing someone living so close to Freeport and Kittery really needs to go shopping in Orlando. Good luck.
