Is that what theyre called? The flat top ranges?

Anyway, she is seriously considering buying one and would like to know pros and cons. I will copy and paste this to her so if you want to give some input, she would really appreciate it :)

HI Mom! ;)

Pros:
~ We like how fast ours gets hot
~ We like how it looks

Cons:
~ Pain to get burnt stuff off
~ One of our burners went out just after the year warranty was up and it you can't replace them yourself like with a cook top. You have to have them come out and do it. It was around $75 to have it replace, most of that being labor.
~ Shows dust (ours is black) - I have to wipe it down constantly to make it look shiny and pretty. LOL

That is pretty much it for us.

Hi Binny,

I have a GE glass top and I love it. I never have to worry about cleaning my burners -- just a wipe of the smooth surface and my stove is clean. It cleans up easily and I don't have any scratches on it.

My cooking is fine with it. I haven't notice any difference.

Good luck

Del

Pros- It easily cleans up. You use a razor-type thing to get off the burnt stuff. Easier clean up is done with a stove-top cleaner cleanser. Mine looks brand new after I clean it. I have a white top.

Cons- I think it heats up more slowly, but this really isn't much of a big deal.

You CANNOT cook with Cast Iron or glass cookwear.

I would not have anything else I think.

I have a GE Spectra with the flat top surface and am quite happy with it. It cleans up easily (Cerama Brite helps for the burned on stuff and it acts like a wax to keep it looking shiny.) I probably shouldn't say this because you could be in trouble if the cooktop is still hot, but it's like having extra counter space when you're not using the stove. Extra counter space is always a good thing!

All that being said, we only have electric available at our new home here in SC, when we lived in NJ, I had natural gas and a good old flame and I miss that a lot. It took some time for me to get used to cooking with an electric stove. With a flame, when you turn it down, it turns down right away (like under a pot of
boiling water) but with electricity it just takes longer. Lots of boil overs until I got used to it!

That being said: If I have to have an electric stove, I'll definitely take the flat top kind.

I have a new Kitchenaid that I really love - the flattop burners heat up soooo fast compared to my 15 year old GE electric coil model PLUS none of those old metal rings to try to clean the boil over spills off of! I like everything about it, and I found a special "Easyoff" brand glass top cleaner at the supermarket that works great on cleaning it. She won't be sorry if she gets one!

I have had the GE spectra for 2 years and love it. Like my brother told me when I was debating....when something boils over you just smile cause its a quick wipe up. I use some cleaner as well. I used to hate cleaning those other burners!!!!! (I use mine as extra counter space too as long as it is cool.

My daughter has one (black) and it always looks streaky and / or dusty. It drives me nuts. But she says she likes it other than that.

Another con to the ceramic top stoves is you can't cook Jiffy Pop on them!

Another one, they will break if you "drop" something heavy on one (It's a long story, so don't ask. Let's just say I learned an expensive lesson and DBIL calls me the Stove Top Killer). They are about $400 to replace the top alone. The burners are about $75 to replace and I have replaced one myself without the repair man, but the dual burner, well.. I couldn't figure that one out. I could either get the middle to heat or the outer ring but not the whole thing. It was about $100 bucks to have them come out and rewire it.

All that said, I love my stove, even though I don't cook!:p

I love mine, too, for cleanup. The only problem that I do have is that when I'm boiling water the pan seems to rock violently, swishing water out of the sides. I have Farberware pans, so they have a slightly rounded bottom. Does anyone else have this problem? I hate to invest in new cookware, but this splish-splashing thing drives me crazy.

I got mine about 5 months ago. I really love it!! :bounce: I always HATED to clean the stove top when things would boil over and you'd have to scrub those little pans forever. When something boils over, I immediately wipe what is NOT on the cooking area (the top stays cool when in use...only the element heats), then when it cools entirely, I just use the ceramic top cleaner to clean it up. I found that after you clean it, you can buff it with a paper towel to get the streaks off. I have more of a gray top. I didn't want a solid black one. I think it heats much faster than my old stove, but then again, that was over 20 years old! Since I have cabinets directly above my stove and have heard stories of cans dropping on the tops and cracking them, I simply moved all things like boxed cereals or side dishes in that area. I HIGHLY recommend getting one!! :bounce: :bounce:

Another vote for the glasstop GE Spectra - had it about a year. Not only is the glass top easy to clean, it looks great with the white glasstop. Another added bonus is that the oven part is one of the best for baking, DW loves hers.
