I posted here about our cat that went missing a few weeks ago.
well.....
The cat died in my neighbor's barn. She called this afternoon saying she spotted her and she wasn't doing well, she saw her yesterday but didn't realize it was the cat in the flyers in the neighborhood, she called this afternoon after going out to find a flyer ( she didn't realize it was my cat til she spoke to me) I called her back and heard what she said and rushed over, my poor kitty had already died. she had probably passed away this morning or last night by the way she felt :(
I feel so horrible. I can't believe the cat was right next door. I was calling out for her everyday in case she was close by, but I never saw her. I don't know why she didn't find her way over here, unless she didn't want to :(
I feel sick.
the neighbor also said she saw her a few weeks ago by the barn, but didn't think anything of it because she gets cats in her barn all the time........but I had flyers ALL OVER the neighborhood.
I put the word out, but she didn't realize it was the same cat in the flyers, til the cat came in yesterday almost deceased at that point.
so I was too late, I just feel so horrible, I can't stop tearing up.
I am trying to hold it together because the kids were very upset. they are doing better now, but I can't stop thinking about it.

every day I called out for the cat, looked around the woods here and up and down the street in case, and never once spotted her. I can see the neighbors barn from my back porch.
I think it is more horrible that she came so close to getting home.
I would rather have not ever known what happened to her.

I'm really sorry. :(

Are you the same one that posted that your DH saw it out while jogging once? And I know lots here will disagree with me. . but I don't believe in indoor only cats. . no matter the situation. We live near woods with coyotes, raccoons and everything else you can think of. . .I teach my cats to be able to make it outside. That's just my philosophy and how I feel. Please don't think I am talking about you personally. I'm truly sorry. . it must be very hard to know she was so close but you were unable to help her.

yes that was me. it turned out that was not my cat. after I posted that, I was able to spot that cat the following week and got up close and it was not our cat.

she was an indoor cat. funny thing is she did not looked starved when I saw her today. she looked like she had been eating.
my neighbor was not feeding her, she must have been eating mice.

Oh. . I'm sorry. Most likely she was. .. or eating neighbors food that had been left outside. Usually, it isn't starvation, but dehydration, poisoning, or exposure. Try not to think about it too much. You did everything you could. . .don't let the guilt eat you up. . .there is a plan for everything and we're not privy to the details. :(

Funny thing. . .our tabby went missing for about 3 days. . .turns out she had been chased up a tree by some dogs. . .BUT I went to the humane society everyday and damn if I couldn't recognize my own stinking cat! All the tabbies looked the same! I would call her name and some would react and some wouldn't. . .I just came to the conclusion that none of them were her. . and I was right. Since then I have taken a really close look at her face and know that she has a unique marking on her nose. . .so next time. . .lol! It was embarrassing to admit you couldn't pick out your own cat!

I do feel guilty. I let the cat down I let the kids down. I feel like I could have done more. I am also having unreasonable angry thoughts toward the neighbor. She says she saw her in the barn around the time she went missing. I covered the neighborhood with flyers with her pic and she didn't think it could be the cat on the flyers!!!!!! She says she gets cats in the barn all the time.
I know it's not her fault but I still feel angry and so sad. The cat had to know she was practically home. She must have heard our dogs!
I just feel so horrible.

I'm so sorry, how sad. :sad1:  Maybe she got into anti-freeze. I guess something good to think about might be that she didn't get caught in an engine (hiding under a warm hood) or she didn't get eaten by wildlife, etc. She was probably warm in the barn and knew she wasn't completely, completely lost. KWIM? And she probably wasn't terrified like she would have been if she was really, really lost, out in traffic, being chased by mean kids, etc. Still really hard to think about, I know, but I'm sure she knew you loved her. You can have a little ceremony with the kids and maybe bury her at home. Then at least you'll know she made it HOME.

I hope this helps a little bit. :flower3:

Poem For Cats

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

I'm sooo sorry! And I can understand your anger. . .but what's done is done. :( Don't beat yourself up. . .nothing can be changed now. You are very much entitled to your emotions. . .and I understand them.

I know it probably doesn't make you feel any better, but cats sometimes know when it's the end. And they will try to run away, so they die someplace else.

My sister's cat, that we had for years and years, she had to be 15 yrs or older. She was born to a feral cat, and took her (and siblings) in, and raised them. They were always outdoor cats, and slept on the screened in porch. When my sister moved and got an apartment, the cat became strictly indoors, except for the occasional dash out the door. One day she disappeared and never returned home. Looked for weeks and weeks, checking the humane society, the pound, the internet, the streets. After talking with some places, most of them said it wasn't uncommon for a cat to leave like that at the end. She was the first cat that died of old age.

My first thought is to agree with the previous poster. I don't know the age or health of your cat but I think that it is common for a cat to go away someplace and hide when they are ready to die. I would hold on to this thought. She might have picked the best place for her. Not perfect for you, but what she needed.

This is what I was thinking as well.

I am truly very sorry and you must be really hurting right now:hug:

Please do continue to recognize that your anger toward your neighbor is irrational and do not do or say anything to her about it. Many people really do not look closely at fliers that are up--and to many people all cats look pretty much alike. I think it was nice that she went out and got a flyer and called you and did what she could when she realized.

So sorry about your cat  I know the pain of losing a loved one can be really hard.

How do you teach your cats to be able to make it outside?

I'm so sorry you lost your kitty. They say that animals know when they are really sick, so maybe she just felt the barn was a safe place to go. I hope you can soon get to the place where you smile when thinking of her.
