Today we got our band jackets at the band meeting. There is one kid who, i think we can honestly say, is our number 1 fan. He goes to all of our performances (parades, football games, festivals) and cheers us on, even though he isn't in band. Last spring, his house exploded while he and his sister were in it. His sister got out OK. She went to the hospital and was released later that evening. He is slightly mentally handicapped. He was confused when the house was on fire and didn't know what to do. One of his neighbor's encouraged him to jump out a window, and after a while, he finally listened. Moments later, his house exploded. There was nothing left. The roof was laying in the middle of the street. He had burns over most of his body and was in the hospital for a long time. He is doing well now and is back in school. It amazed me at how much the whole school was impacted. We had 4 banners that were each over 10 feet long and they were filled with signatures of people who wanted him to get better soon. Anyways, he came tonight for the band meeting because his sister is in band. They were handing out the jackets and our band director got to the last one. The band director made this nice little speech about how he is our number one fan and always there to support us. When the kid found out that the jacket was for him, he got the biggest smile on his face. I looked over at his mom and she was crying. I was thrilled that he got the jacket and if anyone in the whole school deserves one, it was him. So after a rocky start to the evening, this was a nice way to end it.
:
That was just a horrific, freaky thing.
My son is in his 2nd year of high school with the marching band and absolutely loves it. As most around here know...we will be marching a week from Tuesday at the Magic Kingdom!! I can hardly wait!!
