A friend and I were talking yesterday about all of the words we've eaten since becoming parents, especially now that we're parents of teenagers!

Just for fun, what were some of the things that you've said/thought before actually experiencing it? I'll start.......when my kids were babies I would think to myself, "My kids will NEVER throw a temper tantrum like so-and-so's", "My kids will NEVER be seen in public with a dirty face/messy hair", and the one that died immediately after the first temper tantrum in public, "My kids will NEVER be allowed to buy junk from the check out aisle."

Just a few of the hundreds that I've uttered.........what are yours?

I used to say my kids would never have a car until they could afford their own and their own insurance......but I got tired of driving DD around....

My child will never eat junk food.

I did really well when she was little. Now she's 13 and so darn picky about everything. I'm tickled when she eats anything! Right now she's pretty much surviving on grilled cheese sandwiches or hot dogs.

I used to babysit so I didn't have too many "my kids will never's". But my sister did and oh boy did she make sure and tell me how bad a job I was doing. Skipping in public, what an outrage!

Until she had hers.

My kids will NEVER go on a wild High School Senior trip..........................both went to Cancun! Aghhhh!!!

"My kids aren't going to play hockey." Ds-8 is about to start his 5th year. Unfortunately I said this in front of my MIL before I knew anything about the sport of hockey. She likes to bring it up frequently.

Oh yeah...my kids were going to be the best behaved children you ever saw. They would never talk back, never cry or scream in public and they would do everything they were told to do.

YEAH RIGHT! No one told me that.... surprise, surprise....kids have brains and minds of their own!:teeth:

So, we eat junk food, they drink pop, they threw temper tantrums..(not alot thank you), now that they are older they argue with me...oh well..lots of gray hairs later I've decided they aren't so bad. They don't smoke, they don't drink and they don't do drugs. They have good friends and do pretty well in school. All in all I'd say we are doing ok.

My kids will never...talk back or be disrespectful.

It's a CONSTANT source of upheaval at home. The older one is testing me, big time. I haven't murdered him....yet. :p

My kid will never have her own cell phone.

After numerous "where is she?" occasions, I caved in. It's much easier to keep up with what's going on. I bet my parents wish they would have had one for me back in the day.

Piercing other than ears or tattoos anywhere....she's just 13 and I'm holding my breath until she's 18. We're also holding out on getting her own cell phone. She's not very active other than school, so she doesn't have a need, yet.

I once said my kids will never attend a co-ed sleepover while they are in high school. In the middle of my words, an older, and wiser mother stopped me. She said "never say never". These are a big part of the post-homecoming/turnabout/prom activities in our area.

While there are certain restrictions on such events (like the mom and dad have to be home and I get to talk to them), I will admit that I have allowed my kids to attend sleepover parties where there are boys and girls. And they haven't given me a single reason to regret it.

I think my statements all went along the lines of "I will never..." As in "I will never embarrass my kid the way my mom embarrassed me" (who knew so many things fall under the catagory of 'embarrassing' when you have teens? lol) Or "I will never let my kid talk back to me like that" (Of course 19 years later I have had my share of 'backtalk' from dd)

I always used to "think" my kid will never go out with a messy face or unmatched clothes... :o oh well. ;)

My kids will never have a video game in this house...................

Oooooops. Where did that PS2 come from??

I never said "My kids will never act up in public". What I said was "if you act up in public, you will pay a price". They did, they paid, and they soon stopped.

The older one is testing me, big time. I haven't murdered him....yet.

Hmmmm. In Florida, killing your teenage offspring is not considered a crime.

My kids will NEVER have their birthday party at Chucky Cheese's...with the oldest one 8, I think we'll be able to stick to that one!!! (Of course, the girls just discovered this kiddie spa where they want to have their next parties....at $49.99 per child!!!!)

My kids will never go to WDW without ME !!!!!Those words I will never "eat"

"My girls will NEVER have scooters or ride bikes without a helmet..." They did get scooters and (gasp) younger DD, 8, was out on hers helmet-less and in flip flops last night. I just looked at her and said I have no sympathy for her if she scrapes the end off her toe (the WORST feeling in the world IMO). I do still make them wear helmets on bikes so far, though.

As far as having them perfectly groomed in public at all times, I really did try pretty hard...it just didn't work much past about age 4!

My kids will never come home after graduating from college and plan on just STAYING here!!!:o

"My DD will never wear trendy clothes- I will dress her in classic children's clothes."

Well, now that I have an almost 6 year old who is a fashion diva, that declaration has fallen by the wayside. She refuses to wear jeans, plain T-shirts, or classic dresses. She enjoys knit sundresses, capri pants, miniskirts, and anything else considered trendy or "hip".

But I absolutely WILL NOT let her wear age-inappropriate clothes that show off the tummy, or logo tees that say "sexy" or "Hot girl" or anything like that. There are girls her age wearing clothes like this! That is where I draw the line.

My DH has declared "No tattoos or piercings other than on the earlobes until college is done!" And he means it! ::yes::

Guilty on all of the above "nevers" that can apply to a child under the age of 6...especially the dirty face in public. One day at school, DS4 had chocolate pudding for lunch. When I picked him up, of course it was all over his mouth and face. When we got home, I completely forgot about it until that night when we went back to school for his Christmas program. I was up in the choir loft video taping his Christmas program and through the recording lens I saw it.....And I was wayyyyyy up in the back, so I imagine everyone in the church saw chocolate pudding on my kid's face.
