Saturday, May 17 and our school district is having school today to make up for a snow day. We had an ice storm in February that kept us out of school for two days. I can't ever remember having 2 days of bad weather to make up for in Texas, but it posed quite a dilemna for us to re-schedule. They picked today! My DH got up and got doughnuts for the boys to entice them to get out of bed and get ready for school. It just doesn't feel like a Saturday!

That's a first for me - never heard of that before! Why didn't they just add a day on at the end of the school year?? Poor kids.

We had to do this 2 years ago I think.. We had to make up a day, but it couldn't be added on at the end of the year because of graduation, so the day got added on the Saturday after finals. I think it may have only been a half day, but still.. who wants to go to school on a Saturday? haha

We had occassional hurricane days when we lived in Florida, and now we sometimes have snow days (none this year!) and we always tack them on at the end of the year. Saturday make-up days sounds weird but I guess it is good you will be done on time in May/June!!!

I have heard of this, but I think MANY parents called in "sick" for their child. I wonder how much real work they will get accomplished with teachers and students who do not want to be there.

We did that a couple of years ago because our school missed an extra day that the others in our system didn't because of tornado damage in the area. So we went of a Saturday but only for a half day. The kids weren't counted absent if they weren't there but the teachers all had to be there. By Monday it didn't seem like we had a weekend at all and seems like it was a Saturday in Feb so it wasn't like we were getting out of school anytime soon. A real bummer for us.

There was quite a controversy about the day, they couldn't add on at the end because of finals and grades, Memorial Day and the graduation ceremony that had already been set. They couldn't do May 10 because of Mother's Day weekend, etc., etc. It was a mess, but today is the day. It is what they call an early release schedule, no lunch served, 3 hours shorter than a normal day. My high schooler said they were going to watch movies all day. He also said if they didn't have 50% attendance they would have to reschedule the day again. I wonder if that was just a threat to get them to come.

im a student and I live in Connecticut. To us, snowdays aren't that big, but seriously, we got moved to get out of school from june 19th to the 24! in Texas it must be horrible going to school on a SATURDAY!
My condolences,

Blinky

Our children are in a year-round magnet school program. When we have had ice storms and had to make up days they are always scheduled for Saturdays. But- they only go a half day until 12:00pm to meet some legal requirement.

It is weird though!

I bet your boys were grumbling. One nice thing is summer is on its way with no school!!! The last day of school for the elememtary students here is May 30th.

Hi dbond. We recently moved to Frisco (I need a new name) and our makeup days were the Monday after Easter and Good Friday. DS didn't go to school on Good Friday since we had plans scheduled long before we moved to this district but it was a weird day to choose IMO. I don't know about Saturday!

HI PG! Plano only had Good Friday in their original calendar to take away. They didn't give us the Monday after Easter this year so they had to come up with a 2nd day and today was it. Not very good planning if you ask me, but we survived, and now our weekend begins. It really wasn't so bad after all, DH and I got some much needed alone time this morning, that was nice.

Yeah, the kids here also had to make up days from holidays and weekends. Well, actually, I think the only kids that ended up doing weekends were the kids from the school that was destroyed in a tornado -- they missed more school than any other kid, because, well, the district had to organize a school for them! Our district doesn't have any built-in "weather" days, though with the way it's been this year, we could really use tornado days!
