My kids are always sick lately :(

We have been going on almost 2 months of illnesses around here - normal for my DS2 as he has asthma and allergies, so the fall is brutal. Not normal for my DD6 who is the strongest and healthiest kid we know. DS has ear tubes, and was weaned off of his asthma meds this summer, but is back on to 1 puff per day. He also got his adenoids out in April and we have seen a huge improvement with both surgeries.

DD6 - Doc/hospital said DD6 caught a superbug virus that is going around our city big-time. Tested for mono, strep, and various other illnesses that all came back negative. No H1N1 or seasonal flu as she didn't cough and her chest x-ray was clear. She is almost back to normal, except her throat is still very swollen, and doc says this is from scarring due to a rough couple of months of swollen glands, minimal coughing due to postnasal drip, high fevers and 2 rounds of antibiotics that didn't work as she had a virus. Went to school yesterday for first time in 10 days (half day) and she did well. She is still tired, but is ok.

DS3 - Various illnesses such as hand/foot/mouth, high fevers 1x week or every other week, very bad colds, coughing and sore throat. Monday afternoon took to docs...again... and he said more than likely viral as well but took a throat swab that came back negative. Went home and by 11:30 that night, we were in emergency for 6 hours. They took him right away as his fever was holding steady at 105.2 for hours upon hours and would not go down with meds. Now, both of my kids spike very high fevers, very quickly and so we've been on the Tylenol/Motrin protocol for years, but it didn't work. Doc and nurses were worried, so they increased the dosage and put him on drip with fluids. This seemed to work as his fever came down and we left hospital at 6:00 am. No sleep for Mommy and Daddy for 24 hours...They took lots of bloodwork and most came back negative - I say most, as they are still waiting on some tests (have to grow the cultures). Said superbug virus more than likely as well...

Kept both kids home on Tuesday for rest. DS was doing well - eating, resting and playing, considering what he had been through that night. That afternoon, small temp of 101, and hospital said to give meds in order to see if it came down. It did, so we went outside for fresh air - he had a great time, came back in and temp was 102, so more meds and that was it. Had a great night's sleep for first time in 5 nights, and no fever yesterday for 24 hours. We thought we were out of the woods!

Fast forward to last night at 2:00 am, I checked his temp as he felt warmish, and it was 101.7! Oy! We left him for a bit, but then gave him meds at 5:00 as it was holding steady - it is now 99. My mom has taken day off of work and will be caring for him today at home. We thought he could go back to school today, considering yesterday, but no go...

We can't figure out what is wrong with him? We are now thinking a sinus cold as he has major drippage that is alternating between clear and green/yellow, and he now has a postnasal drip cough. Doc didn't want to give him antibiotics as he had them 3 weeks ago for his throat. We will call docs again today for the umpteenth time, and see what he says...

What do you all think? He has had moderate to high fevers of 101 - 105.2, on and off for at least 7 weeks now, with all of the above symptoms, plus sore eyes (I read this in some other threads on here as well) and very tired. He had a really good 8 days or so, and now this week, he's down, despite us keeping him away from his sister, fresh sheets/towels each day, no sharing cups, washed all toys, etc. Both kids have been in private school since 13 months, so their immune systems should be used to it by now. School doesn't have any major stuff going around anyway - just talked to both principals and his teacher last night.

What would you all suggest? DH and I are professionals who are missing work - we don't have much help as our parents are younger and work themselves, as do siblings. We are starting to get very frustrated with the whole situation as we are missing out on lots of stuff. We are most worried about the kids though, especially the baby as he is only 27 months, and has spent so much of it sick.

Tiger :sad1:

I hate to say it, but in our house, the more older siblings, the more baby was sick. My twins, therefore, were hit the hardest - between October and May, there were probably 10 days they weren't sick during their first 3 years of life. When you factor in the normal childhood illnesses - coxsackie, fifths, rota, ear infections, roseola - and all of the random viral infections - colds, stomach bugs - they were ALWAYS sick. If it makes you feel better, they are now 6, and rarely get sick.

Hi Tiger - hang in there! Sounds a little similar to my kids. We are battling H1N1 since last week - my DS6 also has asthma and allergies and was diagnosed with Croup last Friday night in the ER and then tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1) on Monday at his pediatricians. Had to take him to the asthma specialist at our Children's Hospital on Tuesday, and think he's over the worst now.

The fever thing is similar to my DS3 - he had a fever Sunday - 103 - and started with cold sympotoms. Monday thru Wedneday this week he was decent - stuffy and a little cough, but no fever. Today the fever is back with a vengance and his cough is terrible. I thought he might just get a mild case of it, but now looks like it's coming on full force. I'm assuming it's H1N1 for him as well (our doctors are treating all positive Influenza A's as postive for H1N1).

It is so hard to know what they have - just a cold, the flu, H1N1 or something entirely different. I know with my DS6 who has asthma - everything he catches is 10 times worse for him and last weeks and weeks when everyone else is over it in a couple of days. His cough lingers for months sometimes. Usually Oct - Dec he has a constant cough and stuffy nose, it just never goes away...just get worse or a little better here and there.

I do feel you pain - Friday night we were in the ER from 12:30 am to 4am. Didn't sleep after that and was up each night several hours each night doing breathing treatments for DS's coughing attacks. It gets rough - I got a decent night's sleep last night but still feel like all I want to do is go to sleep! Fortunately I'm home and don't have to worry about missing work. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to help him get better. Keep taking him to the doctor if it doesn't improve - I felt stupid calling them every day, but it was worth it, got to take him in and they listened to his lungs and did a chest xray, at least we knew it progressing into pneumonia.

Thanks - I'm so sorry to hear about so many sick kids. :(

We are still strugging over here - my poor baby is coughing a lot now as he has serious postnasal drip. He didn't cough while he was napping though. His face is all puffy and he has serious nasal drippage (all clear, unlike the other night). He is very tired and lethargic. We aren't sure what to do next...

Healing pixie dust for all of our sick babies, Tiger

First of all, you need a big :grouphug:, and I feel the same way so here is a  for me.. I pulled my kids out of school for 6 days to go to Disney last month. Since we have been back they have missed several days of school. The first week we were back it was the H1N1 flu, then allergies and infections, stomach bugs and everything else. Just today I find out that my son has mono. :sad2: I had my 16 year old at the dr yesterday, and he said that she has a sleep disorder. Now I'm thinking she may also have mono, but he didn't test her for it.

I'm not sure when this is going to end, but it has become a real pain because they have missed so much. I almost feel like I should home school them just to keep them up to date at school. :rolleyes1

I hope your children are better soon.

Just wanted to send some get well wishes your way!!:wizard:

My 9 year old son has pneumonia right now. He had 4 days of IV antibiotics and is on a week of reg antibiotics starting today. (IV was removed yesterday, thankfully!) We spent 8 hours in the ER last Thursday for them to tell us "he had a bug". He ran a 104. fever for days! Took him to Urgent Care on Sunday who did a xray and found the pneumonia. It has been so tough. He has been miserable! He has been out of school since last Tuesday and was cleared today to go back Monday as long as he does not regress.

There is so much going around the schools here it is ridiculous! I hope everyone can get healthy, and stay healthy, soon!:grouphug:

I can relate we have been sick in our house for months. My youngest caught a virus and ended up with a double ear infection...she finally got over that and within two days my oldest and I ended up with a horrible head cold. I really haven't had one that bad in a long time. It took us both a week to kick it. We had 3 days and then my youngest got sick again....thinking maybe her ear infection didn't heal up I took her in and she was positive for H1N1 and was very sick for about a week..started to get better and then got real sick again...took her back in and she had a double ear infection again. In the mean time my DH has come down with the flu and is very sick right now.. I started feeling very ill yesterday. Went to dr this am and it's the flu. My oldest started running a fever this afternoon. It sucks when you're sick...it really sucks when you're so sick you don't want to move but have to take care of two others and a 3 year old who's feeling much better and bouncing off the walls. All I can say is I hope the tamiflu my doctor was willing to give me works as well as they say it does... I've got to get better soon to take better care of the rest of my family.

I hope everyone feels better soon and all of this crud will go away.....I NEED a WDW vacation without sickness except I don't know if we can afford one after all of the doctor bills! ;)

It sounds a lot like what my son had when he was 5 years old. The doc finally sent him for sinus xrays. They were postive so he gave me a prescription for augmentin for 3 weeks. It worked. A couple weeks before that they tried amoxicillan for 10 days but it did not work. I also did saline nose drops daily and ran a warm mist humidifier in his bedroom. My son is now 18 but I think these days they may say to use a cool mist humidifier. I prefer warm mist but you have to be craeful that is cannot fall over on anyone. Good Luck, I truly feel bad for you.

Also sending you a . Only have one DS 1.5 but pretty much every other week for the past several months has brought a new bug -- or a repeat of a bug.

We are scheduled to go to Disney the first week of December and I am thinking about keeping him (quarantine!) home from daycare for the three days before we leave. Of course then he'll just pick up something on the plane.

My sympathies on the missed work, too. I am single and have no family or friends who can babysit during the day. I just keep thinking that after this season he'll be immune to just about EVERYTHING. Hang in there!

Thanks to everyone for your support and well wishes - I send healing vibes your way too!

Last night, baby slept most of the night - yeah!! Temp went down to 99 (this is pretty much his normal temp), and today he stayed home with nana (she came to watch him after working midnights) all day and no fever! He ate a lot today, slept and has been playing or actually bugging his big sissy all night!

We are so grateful that he didn't have bronchitis or pneumonia, as his asthma was out of control last year, and he was in hospital or emergency constantly for respiratory issues. His asthma is under control at this point, no ear infections due to tubes, and good drainage due to his adenoid removal - we just have to work through all of these colds and viruses. We are worried about the flu, and pediatrician wants him to get seasonal flu shot, but he is still behind on his 18 month shots (he is 27 months) because he has been ill so much this past 1.5 years. If he is constantly stuffy or ill, doc won't give shot anyway. I am nervous as I have very bad reaction and sensitivity to flu shots, so I haven't been able to get them for years now.

We are hoping for a good night's sleep tonight - DD6 also had a great day at school today, so that's great as well, as she has never missed this much school at all.

Healing hugs sent to you all, Tiger
