As much as I was trying to avoid the local newspaper's photographer, I managed to get in there anyway!
This photo (of the back of my head) was taken during a retirement party for an L&D nurse who retired after 35 years of service!
Here's a little of the story:
Nurse delivers herself a personal gift, retirement.
For 35 years, Emma Nichols tended women in labor.
Emma Nichols has been in labor for 35 years, and she's ready for a break.
She deserves one, according to friends and co-workers.
But those who worked with her in the labor and delivery department--or L&D as they call it--don't know how they'll get along without the woman who taught so many others the meaning of compassion.
Nichols came to the hospital in 1967, when terms like "natural childbirth" and "Lamaze method" were practically unheard of. Mothers got so drugged during delivery they were almost comatose--and fathers knew even less about what was going on.
