I just returned on Saturday from 8 nights at the GF. We originally were booked at the AKL, but after a two night stay at the GF in August (Mission Space Preview), my wife asked to stay there again for the long vacation. It was our first time at the GF in a standard room. We had a garden view room overlooking the quiet pool on the 4the floor of the Boca Chica building. The location was great. While we had a less than average stay at the GF RPC a couple of years back, we realized that the GF is in a class of its own at WDW.

We had flawless service, wonderful room amenities that are standard to all guests. Those upgraded toiletries that Samantha Browne shows on Great Hotels are standard in all rooms, the robes, nightly turndown, mini-bars, and a free refrigerator in the room were all very nice. I did miss the size of the CR rooms (they are a full 40 square feet smaller at the GF, and it shows) but we still had plenty of room.

The transportation is excellent. My SIL was staying in the BWV, and we they had long bus rides from every park because the bust stopped at 5 hotels. The GF was the second or third stop back from all of the parks, and last to be picked up, so we always had a short trip to whatever park we were going to. The trip to Epcot was the longest. With transfers it took us up to 40 minutes to get from our room to the Epcot gate. Still, monorail transportation is part of the fun of WDW, so we always enjoyed the ride.

Usually we try to eat at all of the restaurants at the hotel we stay at, but we don’t care for Citrico’s, and Victoria and Albert’s is (donning flame retardant suit) overrated, so we just had a good meal at Narcoosee’s, a couple of light lunches at Gasparilla Grill and some great lunches and breakfasts at the Grand Floridian Café. I really wish they would open up the café for dinner at the GF. Like the Concourse Steakhouse at the CR or Kona Café at the Poly, the GF needs a casual dining venue for dinner that offers a little more than cheeseburgers and hot dogs. One waitress said she though they are going to open for dinner after the exterior renovations are done, though I don’t see what one has to do with another. **Just to clarify, the exterior of the Café was being renovated. It wasn’t an eyesore, there wasn’t any noise detectable from your room (or even the pool for that matter), and it doesn’t affect the view of any hotel room.**

The GF quiet pool, which has always been a big draw for us with its size and the beauty of the landscaping around it, has been made even better by the addition of the new theme pool. That pool draws enough people to relieve the former crowds at the quiet pool (though I’d venture a guess that the quiet pool is more popular than the theme pool; probably due to its location). On hot days in the middle of the afternoon, the pool always had chairs available right next to the pool. Nothing was very crowded this week, despite the FTP scare, the parks were as empty as I’ve seen them since the week after 9/11; that carried over to the recreation at the hotel and the transportation. I’ll never again go during the busy season. I like the place nice and empty!

A few random thoughts:

• While taking the boat to the Poly, we noticed that the work is still ongoing at the Poly Hawaii longhouse. One interesting note is that the banister rails on the balconies of the Poly have all been painted white. It may have been a primer coat, but it sure looked like a finish coat from a distance. I like the way it looked. It really lightened up the building.
• The deck boards for the dock at the poly were all replaced on Friday of last week. The deck now has a staggered outside edge as opposed to the straight lines it formerly had.
• The observation deck by the California Grill is open and available to anyone. I even asked a manager and he told me he was never aware of the decks being closed.
• The parks were EMPTY. The longest wait was for Space Mountain on our first Saturday. We waited 8 minutes. Everything else was walk-on to the pre-show. Mission Space was walk-on on every time we went to it; we were there for the first time at 12:00 on Saturday and even then there was no line. Back at the MK, even the Astro-Orbiters had no line; I’ve never seen that before.
• The AK is too damn hot! That place needs some sit down restaurants and a few more in-door attractions so that it can stay open later and relieve the heat for the guests. People parade out of there by lunch and I think it’s because of the heat. I really enjoy the park, but it is a ghost town after lunch. That may be due to the worst food of any Disney park, or it may be due to the intense heat of the place. Either way, it needs to be addressed.
• I went to Blizzard Beach for the first time, and while I liked it, I prefer Typhoon Lagoon. The lazy river and wave pool at TL are much better, and Summit Plummet is fun…once, but I don’t like turning my trunks into a Speedo© if I don’t have to!
• There are some nice things about the GF that a lot of people won’t notice but that I found to be exceptional from a quality standpoint. Among them are the solid core wood doors in the rooms with wood frames as opposed to hollow metal frames. Likewise the molding, trim and cabinetry are of a higher standard at the GF. Dimmer switches were used for the reading lights, marble bathrooms as opposed to tile, etc. There were just a lot of nice details that the BWV (which was the only place I had to directly compare it to since my SIL was there) didn’t have.

If you have any questions, I’ll try to answer them.

Nice review- makes me all wistful and wishing I was there. I totally agree that the GF needs a casual dining option. You really are stuck between high-end and fast food with nothing in between.

I noticed the Poly rehab when we were there and was amused to see that the roof is really green corrugated iron they paint brown. It's so real looking from a distance, I never would have noticed.

I'm also with you on the AK- far too hot and bad bad crowd management. We bailed out of there at 12 noon the day we visited- the kids just got too cranky and after getting pushed around by a rude lady in Dinoland when we waited in line to see one of the Dino characters, my little boy just went into meltdown.

Great to hear so many good GF reviews!

Going to be at the GF for the first time in December, treating my 70yr old parents for their 50th anniversay. I have a garden view room reserved. I am planning to fax a request for a quiet room away from pools and noisy areas. Do you have any suggestions on a specific building or rooms to request ? During your stay was the quiet pool actually quiet ? Several years ago I was awoken several times at the Beach Club by a very loud party that was happening at the "quiet pool".

Thank you so much for a great review of a GV stay at GF. Too often we only read about the concierge stays. It is great to know that a great time can be had without the extra cost (that some can't afford).

Appreciate the info.:smooth:

I wouldn't worry about requesting a room away from the pools. We were directly above the pool, admittedly on the 4th floor, but there was never any noise from the pool that could be heard in our room. That goes for the busier times during the day as well as at night. The GF pool was pretty busy at night, but that is probably because the MK closed at 7:00 or 8:00 all week. Really, I don't think there is a bad building at the GF; all of them have their pros and cons. I don't think any of them would be any quieter than the others.

We usually stay concierge at Disney hotels, but I don't think I will again at the GF. The amenities of this resort give you similar benefits to concierge rooms at other resorts. I don't miss the itinerary planners because we are kind of spur of the moment types so we don't plan too far in advance anyway, and since I didn't have the continental breakfast each morning, I liked trying the different restaurants for a hot breakfast each day. I definitely prefer eggs and bacon to cold cereal and muffins! In fact, this trip may have turned me off of concierge everywhere but AK & CR (both of which have great concierge staffs).

Hi :)

Excellent review of the GF.. thanx!

Did they still have live music in the lobby in the evenings? It sounds like you enjoyed your regular stay more than your concierge stay... what types of problems did you run into with concierge?

Did you miss staying in the main building? I think I would want to stay in the main building.

Thanx

I have to agree with this review totally! We were there last month and I totally enjoyed this resort.

As far as the live music - yes, there is an orchestra playing on the 2nd floor in the lobby. They play for 1/2 hour intervals and then switch off with a piano player on the main floor of the lobby. I can't stress enough how relaxing it is just to sit in the lobby, listen to the music and people watch.

GF was a wonderful experience for our entire family. :)

Nice review...it makes me want to go back. :) We also overlooked the quiet pool & never had a problem with noise...I thought it was a great view & location. We were in Big Pine Key.

Demosthenes, thank you for the excellent review. I have a question for you or anyone who has recently returned from the GF. I was reading one of my WDW guidebooks last night and it mentioned that there is drink service in the lobby. I haven't seen anyone serving drinks in the lobby in years, so I was wondering if they're doing that again. I will be in a wheelchair during my upcoming trip and I'd love to relax in the lobby one evening with either a soft- or a hard-drink without having to go up to Mizner's Lounge to get it myself.

Thanks for offering to advise. We will be staying @ GF in garden view in mid Dec., unless we can get an AP rate for lagoon view. As it stands now, we are GV and would like to be near the themed pool with the slide. We stayed @ GF 2 years ago, but I didn't become familiar with the other buildings. We were in the one to the left as you exit the lodge building.

If you can recommend a closer building I'd appreciate it. Also, what do you think chances are of asking @ check-in for an upgrade to lagoon and receiving it?

Also, you mentioned a refrigerator in your room. I remember a mini-bar, but not a refrigerator. Did you pay extra or have they added them since? I am wondering too if I can request a coffee maker for the room.

We are very excited about our upcoming stay. It is our favorite resort at our favorite place on Earth.

Thanks again for your wonderful review:wave:

Very much enjoyed your review. Sounds like a great trip.

I love those dimmers on the lights over the beds.

BTW the Polynesian has marble in the bathrooms, too.:D When you mention the white on the balconies was that in all the buildings or just Hawaii?

I totally agree about GF Cafe opening again for dinner. It would be so nice. Every time we've asked for about the last two years, we've been told that dinner may start again...after renovations, by the holidays, etc. I've about given up.

Thanks for a great report.

So glad to hear the positive review!:D We'll be staying at the GF for our Oct. vacation. Hope things go as well for us. :bounce:

Also glad to hear you had a great vacation!!!:bounce:

Yes. There was a piano player after 3:00 and the orchestra at night.

The service and food were both pretty inconsistent. There is no real horror story; it just wasn't very good. It detracted from our stay, which should never happen, but especially not when you’re paying a premium to improve your stay.

Did you miss staying in the main building?

Only at night when I was worn out and came back to the resort. It almost hurt to walk through the main building, then across the courtyard t our building! But actually, our room was much more convenient to the pool, so that was nice too. Of course, I would always love to stay in the main building again, but I did enjoy my overall stay in Boca Chica more.

The closest lodge to the theme pool is Big Pine Key (well, technically its closest to the main building) followed by Boca Chica. None of them are terribly far from the theme pool, but lots of people still use the quiet pool because it is more central to the resort.

The refrigerator is free, but you do have to request it upon arrival. Ours was in our room before the bellman left (BTW, Jerry, who is a valet during the week and a bellman on Friday and Saturday, exemplifies Disney service; he was so friendly, and super funny. Every time we would go to the car, he'd insist on taking us to it and each night we returned, if he saw us he'd grab a golf cart and wheel us to the room. He was great...but I digress...). The fridge works much better full! We let it start to get empty towards the end of our stay and everything started to freeze!

For closest to the themed pool - Big Pine.

For furthest from the pools - Sago Cay (on the side of the marina closest to the monorail track) and then Conch (closest to the boat dock).

I enjoyed reading your review!
I have stayed at the GF several times and after our recent concierge stay this summer I have to say that we will never stay in anything but the standard GF rooms again. We have found that value for money at this resort is best in the standard rooms - concierge was not worth it for us there.
The standard rooms are delightful and the resort itself is magical - my advice to anyone considering staying there is to save your $$$$ and stay in the standard rooms.

Thank you for a wonderful review!!!

We are almost in the single digits for GF! :0)

I've never stayed at the GF, but I am thinking of doing so later this year. However, I am a bit hesitant because I have been told by a fried who stayed there recently that the resort is "too formal," and that the CM's are "rude and snobby."

I'm not sure what to think, but I would love to get everybody's opinion.

Thanks, SmilingMouse
