My garbage man just knocked on my door...

My BIL is a trash man and he pays for his own cards. They get paid so little that my sister depends on tips to get Christmas presents for her kids. Whenever her Dh comes home from work he gives her the cash and she gets what she can with the money. Without the tips her kids would not have much of a Christmas.

Just showing you the other side.

Not to sound cruel but perhaps he should get a different job if they can't meet their wants on his current salary. I don't want to be forced to tip because someone has a cruddy job.

BUT if my garbage guys were nice that might be a different story. Actually I am thinking I may tip my guys this year just because it is a tougher year all around and they have been extra nice(not charging me for the extra bags I throw out and they take it)
Shoot now you talked me into tipping!

I pay for garbage pickup($54 every 3 months) since I am outside city limits. I have a hard enough time paying that bill and I won't be tipping extra, unless it is a tin of homemade cookies/candy.

Never depend on tips!

Rather than depending on the generosity of others to buy my Christmas presents, I would pick up a small side job throughout the year:confused3
That is some scary, last minute, stressful stuff:scared: Your sister is a big risk taker:eek:

Funny-- we were told that our garbage guys make about $12-15 an hour. Granted that isn't a lot to support a family on, but as someone unemployed-- $12-15 an hour is quite a bit-- especially if another person in the family is working.

guess it depends on where you live.

no - just poor- she saves what she can and does buy some little things but relies on the tips for some of the better presents.

Man - doesn't anyone on the dis ever show some compassion. Getting slammed for not saving enough for Christmas - wow.

That garbage man would be off of my list.:sad2: People are not obligated to give anyone a gift. To sit back and expect or guilt someone into giving you something is just wrong.

That said, we always give a cash gifts to our mail carrier and the garbage men. None of them have ever asked or mailed out cards (reminders:rolleyes:)

How can they base Christmas on what others may or may not give them? Wouldn't it be better to work a little bit of OT, or pick up a short term part time job?

Oh no. Not slamming at all  Just saying that it must be extremely stressful to depend on the generosity of strangers to buy your presents :guilty:

Did that really come across as a slam? I thought it was a rationale statement:confused3

Sorry:hug:

well - he was in foster care his whole life - didn't graduate from HS (did get a GED) - never had the opportunity for college. He does what he can.

I find it great that he would rather do a crappy job that someone HAS to rather than collect unemployment.

He really is the greatest guy that had a hard life.

No one is forcing anyone to tip - I was just showing you the other side.

My DH is the GM of a private trash hauler. I feel certain his guys would get fired if they knocked on anyone's door. That is just not done. I asked DH about tips because where my sister lives in Alabama, tips and gifts are so common that you can drive down her street and see huge gift baskets sitting on top of the herbie curbies.
As for here, people do tip, but when they do it is a nice surprise for the guys. They really do work hard, especially at Christmas. For the residential guys, the week after Christmas is the busiest of the year and no one can take vacation. Think all of the wrapping paper, boxes, extra garbage. They are also out there dodging the cars of some of the nuts that we have here who shouldn't be driving. So, when they get the occassional tip, it is very much appreciated.

He was working full time as G.man the delivered pizza on the weekend - NEVER saw his family - my sis made him stop. They would rather do w/o than never see each other

He made that choice, which is a good choice if you can afford it:thumbsup2

But why should others compensate him with extra money because he chooses not to work a part time job? Why should people that pay to have their trash removed be the ones that are responsible for giving his children a Christmas when he chooses not to work an extra job for whatever reason?

Again, not lacking compassion here. Just wondering why your sis depends on the generosity of others to supply her children with presents?

Garbage men here are paid very well. The starting salary is 31,200. Not bad for a job that only requires you have a GED and pass a written exam.:thumbsup2

Can you imagine what would happen if a teacher posted that she expected or depended on cash gifts from her families?

I think that's wonderful. :thumbsup2

However, I still believe it's wrong to expect others to hand out cash gifts, in order for your family to have a nice Christmas. What happens if the families decided to give him liquor or baked goods?:confused3

How far does your sister live from NYC? Would he be able to commute? If so, there are plenty of well paying city jobs that only require you to have GED and pass the exam. Transit just had an exam for conductors a few weeks ago. The salary starts at $17.50 an hour. After 3 years it raises to $25.00 an hour.

Sorry:hug:

I'm sorry - I am sensative about this- I see how hard they both work but they can just never seem to get ahead - cars breaking down etc- it's been a bad year for them.

That stinks:hug:

I hope next year is better for them.

Not in this neck of the woods. Our city garbage collectors get 24$ an hour. Pretty good in my eyes.

UGHH - All I said was I am showing you the other side. I NEVER said you should even tip. Guess what??? I don't tip my garbage man either - they stink.
