My Fur Baby is Sick...She's Gone :(

Last February we took in a stray calico who ended up having kittens in our bathtub! We kept two of the kitties and the mom. They kittens are almost a year old now. Shortly after giving birth, the mom became pretty sick. It was a kidney infection, but she did recover and is doing well now. When she was in the hospital, she tested negative for Feline Leukemia. Now, my precious baby Meeko (yes, a raccoon striped gray tabby) is sick. She is usually a bundle of energy. On Wednesday night I noticed she didn't seem very active. Yesterday she was very lethargic. She eats small amounts and drinks her water. She has always been a water kitty so I don't think she is drinking any more than usual, though. She uses the litter box, but she is SO tired. I felt all over her last night and did find what I think to be swollen glands directly under her lower jaw. Of course, I am very fearful of the outcome. I have read on the internet possible diagnosis and none of them good. I am at school (supposed to be teaching, but can't keep my mind on it) right now and my dad is taking her to the vet. I fear the worst. Please keep my little Meeko in your thoughts today.

Meeko is in my thoughts and prayers! Hopefully, it will be something that is easily treated. Keep your chin up!

Sending healing thoughts for your kitty.

Thanks. The worst part is sitting here waiting on a phone call. I have my students watching video on the 1930s and now I am just waiting. She did seem a little better this morning, but I can look in her eyes and know she doesn't feel well.

Awwww, hope little Meeko is okay. I know how worried you must be. :grouphug: Let us know what the vet says.

By the way, whenever I tried to diagnose my furbabies problems over the Internet, I always imagined the worse. Most of the times, my fears were unwarranted. I'm hoping the same for you!

Very, very sad news just came from my dad. Meeko is still with the vet and the blood work is being sent off for testing. However, all indications are leukemia. :guilty: I haven't actually spoken with the vet yet, but eveything is pointing to that diagnosis. I pretty much expected that answer from what I had read. I love that little kitty so much. Some mention of antibotics was said, but I know the inevitable result. Now, what would be the best for Meeko now?

My heart goes out to you and your family. Meeko is so lucky to have you. This is so sad, Please keep us posted. :grouphug: :grouphug:

Very sorry to hear about little Meeko, ugadog. I'll tell ya, these little guys sure do know how to worm their way into our hearts, don't they? I do hope the outcome is a good one here, my best for Meeko.'s

oh I am so sorry the news does not seem good.
My thoughts are with you and little Meeko

Thanks, everyone. Now, for telling my almost 12 year old daughter. She is so ultra sensitive when it comes to animals. She will be crushed. The older daughter suspected this was what it was going to be. The younger one has no idea. I'll talk to the doctor this afternoon and find out what he recommends. I know the ultimate prognosis is death, but I don't know if treatment options can extend her life or not. Has anyone ever faced this? I'm just at a loss right now as what to do.

Before trying to make any decisions, talk with your vet who can better advise you regarding any treatment options, costs and most importantly, quality of life issues. Once you have more information, you can make an informed decision that will be in everyone's best interest.

I'm so sorry to hear what your dealing with. Hang in there.

It was a year ago today that I lost my Golden Retriever :guilty: We still can't get ourselves to get another dog yet.

I'm so sorry to hear this....

Been there, I know how horrible the waiting can be.

I just wanted you to know that I have a Meeko, too. We named him after Pocahonta's raccoon because he has the same mask.

May God bless you and your babies. I know how hard it is to tell children, too, believe me I've had to do it too many times.....

We just had to put our cat of 10years down last week. We are still heartbroken. If it comes down to it you can look up a quality of life questionare and it can help you with your decision

Oh, dear! I'm so sorry. Poor little Meeko! I agree with others - talk to your vet for options.

I've had 2 cats with Feline Leukemia and both had been vaccinated for this. Both lived for about a year after being diagnosed. It's a terrible disease.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

A cat we had gotten from the rescue society died from this. I recall the same symptoms you are talking about. When I felt the nodes I called the vet and he kept him for the day. He said it was nothing!!! :confused3 I woke up about a month later and he was almost dead. It was a Sunday morning so I had to take him to the only open place around...a vet school. :sad2: Cost me over 300 dollars, this was 16 years ago this month. End result I walked out with my baby in a blanket to bury him. They were appalled that a vet had not picked this up...so was I. I never went back to him again although I did call him and ream him a new one. His response...well at least you had him for another month! :rolleyes2 :sad2: Good luck and medical advances have come so far since then. :wizard:

My baby is gone. :sad2: I am so heartbroken. She didn't even live to be a year old. After speaking with my vet (who happens to be a family friend and very trusted), we decided that it was best for Meeko to leave us. My girls are devastated. The worst part is that Pumpkin and Nala will ultimately face the same ending. We just don't know how long we have. I am just so very sad.
