I'm setting the alarm for 11:55 PM and I'm not interested in booking the character M&Gs or parades or fireworks, definitely more worried about rides. My questions are:
1. What's the tier system I keep hearing about? Does it just rank attractions according to popularity and you pick one from each tier?
2. Strictly speaking rides, what should I go for first? (As in, what's likely to "sell out" first?)
3. Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks guys, I've looked at the FP+ threads but I'm really nervous cause I haven't done this before.

See the links in my signature. Priorities and Tiers sounds like what you're most interested in. Availability might help too.

1. Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom do not have tiers, so don't worry about it at those parks. Epcot and Hollywood Studios have tiers, meaning two sets of attractions to choose from. Tier 1 attractions are the most popular, so you will only be able to choose one Tier 1 attraction. Then you will be able to choose two Tier 2 attractions.

2. Some attractions likely to "sell out" early:
  • Magic Kingdom: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Meeting Anna and Elsa, Main Street Electrical Parade, Festival of Fantasy Parade
  • Animal Kingdom: Meet Disney Pals, Expedition Everest
  • Epcot: Test Track, Illuminations, Meet Disney Pals
  • Hollywood Studios: Toy Story Midway Mania
3. I'm sure you know that you can add on FP's at park kiosks, one at a time, after you've used your pre-planned three FP's for that day.

There are only tiers in Epcot and DHS, so you won't have to worry about tiers in MK or AK.

Epcot has a group of attractions in tier 1 and tier 2 - you can choose 1 attraction from tier 1 and 2 from tier 2. Same with DHS. When you make your fps, it will tell you which attractions are in which tiers.

Good luck!

What time zone are you in? I live on the West Coast and logged in at a comfortable 9:00 PM to make mine.
