My first roller coaster ride..maybe

For the record, I don't care for rollercoasters either. I used to not be afraid of heights, but I've had some recent bad experiences that have made me find a fear for them. So tall rollercoasters are something I don't care for.

Disney coasters are not the same as others. A good comparison would be a gory horror movie to a suspenseful thriller. Disney coasters seem to capitalize on theme and senses more than raw thrill. For example, Space Mountain isn't that fast, and you have no idea how high you are or aren't. It's about the fact that you can't see anything and you don't know what is next. Everest has a heights aspect when you are ascending the mountain, but other than that, you really don't see heights. It's more about going backwards. Thunder Mountain is about the caves and the themeing. Rock N Rollercoaster is once again, completely in the dark. Music is blaring in your ears, and it's just a huge adrenaline rush.

That's compared to other rollercoasters I have ridden at Busch Gardens and the like that are about the heights, the drop, etc. That's just not what Disney coasters are about.

BTMRR was my first coaster. I love it, but have not progressed further. Maybe this year.

I know I'm in the minority with this thread because I love coasters, but BTMRR and Barnstormer are good starter coasters for sure. They aren't thrill rides by any stretch.

Also, RnRC is the only coaster that goes upside down at Disney. One thing about it though is that it's all lit with blacklight so you don't realize that you are upside down at all. You don't see the track so there's no anticipation of the loop. Space Mountain is a bit jerky for me and I think would scare a new rider. EE is fun and not scary at all. It's faster than BTMRR, but also has a few stops. My wife is not a coaster fan at all and loved it when we went last year.

Good luck and have fun! :thumbsup2

Just weighing in with the rest...I'm not a big roller coaster fan, but I LOVE all of the Mountains at Disney. Big Thunder is a lot of fun...like others have said, no major drops, nothing upside down...just a fast moving, exciting ride with plenty of cool things to see. Of the Mountains, I would say that it's the easiest ride in terms of "thrill factor"...so it would be a great choice for you to attempt first. Space Mountain is a lot of fun, but being in the dark, there are unexpected turns and dips (though no major drops). EE only has one big drop (despite the intimidating looking climb at the beginning), but the ride is so fast and smooth, I don't get that "stomach drop" feeling...the backwards portion in the dark is actually pretty exciting. Good luck, and enjoy!

BTMRR was my first coaster as an adult. I don't like the stomach drop feeling at all. I love BTMRR? The drops are all small and it is fast and jerky, which makes me giggle for some reason. Space isn't bad either. I like it because you don't know when the drops will come and that seems to keep the stomach drop thing from happening, at least to me. Splash---once was enough. That last drop is way too big and steep. EE I tried last trip and loved. The big drop is on a curve which also keeps the stomach drop feeling away.

Big Thunder is probably the tamest coasters(not built for children) I have ever ridden. My mother who HATES coasters I am talking feels like she is dying from riding space mountain. Well she LOVES BTMRR, it's really not a "coaster" the drops I wouldn't even call drops. Please try it I promise you it's the tamest thing I have ever ridden and I have been over to Dubia and ridden Formula Rossa.

Here's another vote for Big Thunder from a general coaster wimp. To me, the biggest reason BTMRR is "the coaster for people who don't like coasters" is because it is built into the mountain - you don't get that way-up-high-on-a-skinny-metal-rail feeling.

I rode Barnstormer once - it's short, it's bare track, and it almost seems wilder because it's in such a confined footprint. IMO, I wouldn't bother with it. Just go do Big Thunder.

I was always scared of coasters as a kid-my first Disney trip as an adult, I decided to try all the rides :scared: I rode Space Mountain first and it was rough. I got off the ride and was terrified to ride another. My friend talked me into BTMRR. We were put on the first car. Best ride ever! Now I love all the mountains-even Space. Try it. If you don't like it, it is over very quickly.

Good luck! I'm a coaster wimp myself. They scare me! I did ride the Barnstormer and I admit I didn't like it. I was glad when it was over!

I also tried the Hippogriff coaster at Universal and that one scared me too. Lol

But I absolutely love Dinosaur at AK and Forbidden Journey at Universal!

Big Thunder is very tame, you'll be fine.

Also be open to riding the other rides. You're perfectly safe on the ride and you should open yourself up to new experiences. I hated things like Splash Mountain and ToT as a kid, but now I absolutely love them and they have provided me with memorable experiences that I have and will take with me for the rest of my life.

Even if you don't like them afterwards, at least you did it.

By the time you go the Seven Dwarves Mine Train will be open. Maybe that would be a good First ride. Then BTMRR should be fine for you. I love it, it makes me laugh and I am scared of roller coasters, have never tried space, splash, etc. Have fun!

I'm not 100% certain, but I think BTMRR is the first roller coaster I ever rode at age 7. I remember loving it, and I was a timid child who was forbidden from most thrill rides (my mom wouldn't let me ride Space Mountain with the adults in my party, even though I believe I was tall enough, and I threw myself a big old tantrum.)

It's really tame compared to other coasters, I think. I'd say give it a try if you're feeling adventurous!

I think you'll love it! It doesn't go too high (well, I don't feel like it does anyway!). It's fun! :)

I've been on two roller coasters in the past 20 years, the Barnstormer and Big Thunder. The Barnstormer is rough and jerky, and I'd only do it again for my nephew. Big Thunder was actually fun and not scary! I just rode it the first time two weeks ago, and I liked it - I'd definitely recommend trying it :)
