A little late to be posting, I know. But I was encouraged to share them, and I hope you will enjoy hearing about our special day.

A little background.

My husband (called “Fiance” throughout the recaps for the most part) was the one who thought of getting married at Disney. We had an untraditional meeting (online); a very fast courtship; and a long engagement. LOL why have a “traditional” wedding when we could get married at Disney? I was a little skeptical when he first suggested the idea, since I had not been to Disney in years, and my parents had never had the money for us to stay on property. As you can tell from my participation on the Dis, LOL, my new M.O. is lots and lots of Disney trips!!

My parents hated the idea of Disney, but they later admitted that they had misjudged it. My inlaws (usually called “outlaws” in my reporting) were behind the idea of Disney, but very negative on the wedding in general, constantly complained about cost (although they’d volunteered), and gave both of us a lot of stress and bad feelings leading up to the wedding. Permanent damage to the relationship was an unfortunate side effect.

My original location, inspired by a Dis member (janet2k), was shut down unexpectedly a few months before the wedding. Disney Fairytale Weddings worked very closely with us to identify our new location, and we were very happy with it. We kept our reception location a complete surprise to our wedding guest and bridal party. It wasn't easy!

Chapter One: the first 24 hours..

Well, after finishing a lot of little last minute tasks and packing, we left for the land of Mouse at 10:15pm. We had decided to try to drive the trip straight through, but didn’t tell anyone so that we could have a day alone to just be together leading up to the wedding.

We stopped at the cleanest rest stop we’d ever seen somewhere in southern Virginia and then we just kept cruising down 95. I took a brief nap til about 2am and then Fiance was getting tired so I stayed awake to keep him up. We’d slept in super late on Sunday to be able to pull off the trip. We contemplated stopping when we were in South Carolina and kind of tired but we just really wanted to get there. I offered to drive for a while but Fiance said it was enough to just be awake and chatting with him. The toughest part was the hour or two before dawn. Once the sun was coming up we were doing fine and we hit Georgia which of course made us feel better about our progress.

We stopped for some gas and additional caffeine (I think Fiance drank 8 doubleshot starbucks espresso drinks on the trip). Finally we crossed the Florida line. We hit a little bit of traffic in Jacksonville but it was mercifully brief and after a bit we got to Daytona and jumped on I-4 West. Woohoo. We called the Animal Kingdom Lodge to see if we could have our room made ready a bit early since I know people sometimes have to wait when arriving early. I was told that they did not pre-assign rooms and could not do so now. So we had to take our chances.

Now the trip in general went faster than I expected but the last hour was endless!! I felt like we were never going to arrive. Finally at 11:15 – 13 hours after we’d left – we rolled up to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. So happy!! We went in to see if our room was ready. I figured we had a pretty good chance since we’d booked a deluxe and even called…right???

Wrong! We were informed that first, we had two double beds rather than a king bed in our room (ummmm hello we’re getting MARRIED we want that king bed!!) and that our room would not be ready for several more hours. As you can imagine we were just so tired – after all that driving and riding and waiting. But there was nothing we could do. So we hopped back in the car and headed out in search of food.

We decided on lunch at Wolfgang Puck Café. I just got a soup and Fiance had the chicken Caesar salad. We arrived at Downtown Disney and I gave our EM Our Event Manager a call just to let her know we’d arrived, etc. She told me we should talk to the manager about giving us a king sized bed, so we said we would when we got back. We agreed to meet the next day at 4pm for our walkthrough and to go over details and hand her over our various items for the wedding – programs, menu cards, candles, rose petal bags, etc. etc.

Here we are, very sleepy, when we arrived at AKL.

Check out the car, as packed!! A very tight fit.

We had a quick lunch and then hit the World of Disney for some shopping after calling and finding out that our room was still not ready. I did get a cute long sleeved Mickey tee and we bought two mugs and some coconut mickey heads

We wandered around in a semi-comatose stupor and then left to kill some more time with a visit to – you guessed it – the wedding pavilion!! There was an intimate wedding going on so we kept our distance. We talked about photos, etc.

FINALLY it was 3 and we headed back to AKL (keep in mind that during all this time killing, eating, wandering, etc. my wedding dress, all our luggage and two big boxes were packed into the back of our suv). We got there and snagged a valet to help us unload the car. He pretty much did it on his own and did a quick and careful job of it. He congratulated us as he saw the wedding gown and asked about the big day. Because we wanted our location to be a surprise for our guests, we told everyone who asked “MGM” rather than specifying the Tower of Terror. We would hate for some enthusiastic and well-meaning cast member to spill the beans to our guests on their arrival. He took us inside to the bell desk and we tipped and thanked him. We went to the guest services desk to discuss getting a king bed room rather than the two queens. We managed to talk to a sympathetic cast member who agreed to switch us. So we were set with that.

The bellhop was a small lady and I laughed to myself since we had a huge and heavy luggage cart. But she handled it just fine. She offered to store my wedding gown for me in their storage closet but I thanked her and politely told her that I wasn’t going to let it out of my sight!! She did get us some ice too. We gave her a big tip and checked out the room. Very happy!! The room was big with a couch and table and chairs and drum roll please the king size bed!! Finally a sweet blessed nap.We dropped our stuff and I rigged up a way to hang my wedding gown from the hinge of the door that goes to the next room. The little bellhop that could also got me a clean white sheet from housekeeping to wrap the gown in so that it wouldn’t be visible or get dirty. Then we got in bed and set a wake up call for 8pm. We had reservations for a romantic dinner at the California Grill at 9:40. We fell into an exhausted sleep coma!

Wakeup call came from Mickey right on time and we groggily watched tv for a bit and chatted. Then we got our showers and got dressed to head to dinner.

We arrived and found that since our last visit, California Grill’s check in counter had been moved to the second floor to expedite it and control the crowds (so we were told). They took us upstairs and though we’d arrived first in the group of couples checking in, we were seated last. However they did give us a window seat as requested and we had a great view of the castle.

Our waiter arrived and we perused the menu and ordered up some flatbread, iced teas, the romaine salad and I chose the pumpkin lasagne while Fiance got the chicken. We started chowing down on the flatbread like little piggies LOL. Meanwhile we enjoyed the view and relaxed. I had asked our waiter to send the manager over if he/she was not busy. When she arrived I told her that we were having our rehearsal luncheon for our wedding in the Napa room the coming Saturday and I asked her about the new 2nd floor check-in. She said that during the day the elevators do go straight up so we didn’t need to make any changes. She congratulated us on the wedding and I complimented her on the food and her staff vis a vis Heather’s wedding. She was a very nice lady. After she left we chatted and ate our salad and then the manager came back. She was apologizing profusely – apparently they’d inadvertently overcooked Fiance’s chicken and were preparing a new one. They were so sorry to keep us waiting. As a consolation, they brought over two wine glasses filled with huckleberry sorbet for us to try. Delicious!! I thought that was a nice gesture and honestly the wait wasn’t very long. We were already filling up from the bread and the salad (thank god we split it) so we didn’t mind a few minutes to relax plus the yummy sorbet. When the entrees did arrive they were both really good – Fiance raved about the chicken and I was happy with my pumpkin lasagne – very unusual and tasty. We decided to split the miniature chocolate cake with ice cream for dessert.

When the bill came the waiter once again apologized and they’d given us a big discount on the check – which was so nice of them especially because we didn’t even have any complaints!! They were very kind to us. We left a large tip and headed out to get back to our room. Sleepy time! First I put away all my clothes, requested some extra hangers which they sent up right away. Then we set a 10am wake up call and went to bed.

Next up…my outlaws arrive, the walkthrough, and my crying jag...

My Fairytale Wedding Recaps November 2004...
WonderWomanDC, I am so glad that you decided to share your FTW recaps with us. Yahoo!!

I remember when you were planning your wedding reception for the “Haunted Mansion” movie set. Since I had held a dinner party in that venue, I knew your wedding reception was going to be wonderful. But when your venue had to change, I was secretly thrilled that it had been moved to the Tower of Terror since that was where I almost held my FTW vow renewal’s dinner party. I can’t believe that I am finally going to get to read about it. I know I am going to have a lot of fun doing so. Thank you for deciding to share it with us here on the Dis website.

I woke up the next morning before the alarm and went out on the terrace. We had a nice pool view and I got on the phone to call Carolyn Allen’s with our room number for the tux fitting and I returned a call from our photographer. We went over the logistics of the wedding day. It took me a while to get through to Carolyn Allen’s, but when I did we got everything squared away.

I wanted to get our marriage license and get that over with but Fiance was set on going into MGM alone togehter so that we could spend time together before everyone else arrived. I appreciated the thought but just wanted to get the stressful annoying crap out of the way. I gave in though ;) and we went to MGM. When we got to the lobby I wanted to go back up for my rain slicker but Fiance insisted it wouldn’t rain. Famous last words! We got to MGM and went for a fast pass to the Tower of Terror. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go on it as I thought it might be nice to save for the wedding day – but we got the fast passes and then headed into the courtyard to check out our location!

The courtyard was so pretty and I was really impressed with the huge façade rising up in front of it. Very nice – now I could figure out all the photos and where things were in relation to each other. We went inside into the gift shop and then into the area where the photos are distributed. It was cool and we checked it out. We took some photos. Then we decided to try to get a bite before the fastpass although maybe that wasn’t such a great idea with the drops!! LOL. We headed over the Brown Derby which I like a lot but they were completely booked for lunch – major bummer. Then it started raining heavily. Ick. We discussed and finally decided to bail, give away our FPs, and head to the Grand Floridian for tea at the garden view lounge. I think Fiance was trying to cheer me up as I wasn’t in the best of moods. See, on the weather that morning I’d seen that rain was being forecast for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. So now I was stressing bigtime about our rain alternatives.

Tea at the Garden View lounge was really nice. Fiance tried stuff that he normally doesn’t like and we had a nice time. The woman sitting next to us chatted us up a little and asked some questions about Disney which we answered. It was her first time staying on property and her husband was there for a convention. Then she asked if she should tip!! LOL we almost choked and said “yes – she is a waitress so definitely tip her between 15-20% for good service." LOL I think I saved the waitress from a bad day!

We looked around a bit – the xmas gingerbread house in the lobby was under construction. Then we headed back to AKL to meet up with the outlaws. Yes, it's dumb to go back to AKL and then return to Franck’s to meet our event manager but whatever...trust me, don't go there. First thing is that the outlaws wanted two connecting rooms and got one with two beds and one with bunk beds. They whined and whined – this will come up again later. But they didn’t ask the AKL cms to change their room assignment.

We headed over to Franck’s and met our event manager - and we were on time for once!! I was happy to see her and we chatted briefly and then left to go on the walk through at MGM. I told her that I wanted to make sure we talked about the plan B for rain – she assured me that it wouldn’t rain but agreed that we’d discuss it with the MGM staff. When we arrived backstage we waited a few minutes for the MGM team. They were just as nice as we remembered them with some different members. I believe there were six of them and they were very attentive. We went in the door and headed right to the Tower of Terror. They took us through the line and explained how the flow of the party would work. I’d never been on the ride before so I paid a lot of attention. We’d be allowed to do some photos in the queue area which was a great bonus. We got into the room where the clip plays and that was very cool. Then it was time to go on the ride. I decided to go to go for it! We talked some of the MGM staff into going with us!! :goodvibes LOL I was all freaked out because I didn’t know what to expect. Man!! That thing scared the h*ll out of me!! It was perfect and I was glad it ended when it did because it blew me away!! LOL I knew my guests would be blown away too

We got out and the rest of the crew was waiting for us. They showed us how the cocktail hour would be set up in the boiler room area and our guests could claim their photos at the end of the cocktail hour. Then we started talking about the rain scenario. There simply wasn’t room anywhere but the courtyard to put all of our guests. To seat everyone for dinner, they would have to be split into two very separate rooms – the boiler room and the photo area. Bad bad bad. I was starting to get upset. our event manager said there was another alternative that we could look at. But first we went out into the courtyard and discussed the setup, palm tree placement, etc. We discussed the possibility of doing the bar out of the coffee cart instead of trying to mask it. We all agreed that it would be fantastic…unless it rained.

We headed off to look at the other possible backup plan. When they started telling me to keep an open mind I knew we were in trouble.

Next up…the dancing bear…

Hey Jenn & Sam,
It is nice to re read these. I loved your event and I'm so glad you are both doing well.

WoW . . .this is amazing!! I can't wait to read the rest! Do you have pic of the courtyard? Standing in line for the Tower of Terror I awlays imagined an old Vintage Hollywood themed wedding. I can't believe its possible! Can't wait to hear the rest. Thanks so much and Congrats!!

Thanks so much for the compliments and comments :) I am looking forward to posting another installment asap!!

Before I go further with the recaps, there is a side story that’s kind of interesting.

I call it…the Story of the Veils.

When I found out that my veil was not going to be done on time, I was pretty unhappy. I was also very surprised because I like to think I’m a good judge of character and I was shocked that the woman working on it hadn’t come through as promised. Then she sent me an email – she’d refunded double my money and told me to go ahead and buy another veil. She apologized profusely and said that she would try to get the veil done anyway and send it to my hotel. But at that point I wasn’t holding my breath. I was however very impressed by the refund, etc and the classy way she handled the situation. I had a short veil that the woman I bought my second gown from had thrown in since it matched the dress, but I didn’t really like it. Then another Disney bride that I knew sent me such a sweet message – she offered to make me a simple cathedral length veil to wear for the wedding. Is she a doll or what??!! I was really touched by her willingness to help me out. The next day, my friend Meredith who just got married in October offered to send me her veil to borrow for the wedding – and she just ended up looking up the address to AKL and mailing it off to me! So when I arrived at AKL I found a DHL waiting for me – with my original veil. They’d finished it and it was BEAUTIFUL. They had done much more work than I’d originally described and/or paid for! It was lovely and I couldn’t believe it had arrived. Then the next day I had two more packages – guess who? A simple elegant veil from a Disney bride friend and a veil with a ribbon edging from my friend Meredith. So in the end I was so loved that I had 3 veils to choose from, plus the short veil. I ended up wearing the original one I’d had made since it was so beautifully embroidered but it was tough to choose.

Some friends and I decided to try on the veils.

Back to the recaps…

The "keep an open mind" location they were talking about was adjacent to the Brown Derby – and the show was going on. We walked into a big dancing bear on the stage and a ton of kids jumping around. I guess it’s called Playhouse Disney? The place was so not what I wanted. It was kind of an empty undecorated soundstage but with tape on the floor and aged carpet. One of the guys from MGM, trying to be helpful, said “well it’s like a ballroom, we can decorate it nicely”. At that, I started to cry – I think the emotion and the uncertainly all caught up with me at once. I excused myself to go to the bathroom but I guess I wasn’t fooling anyone as my EM followed and tried to console me. I tried to calm down and went outside to reunite with the party. The MGM staff was in a little huddle and then they came over and asked whether arranging to use the Brown Derby in the event of inclement weather would work for me. We went to look as fiance had never seen it. I really really like the Brown Derby and I was so relieved when I found out it was an option. I felt so much better I was really happy and grateful to the MGM staff. I felt better and thanked them all then we headed back to Franck’s.

We went into Franck’s for a drink of water and a quick rehash with our planner of the walk through. We then went to the Pavilion and our planner went over the lighting options. We chose “evening aisle” which was dimmer but not too dim. We spent half an hour talking to her about the photos etc. Originally to obtain the daytime photos we wanted we were going to start at 5pm and then go over to the Boardwalk for some evening photos. But we made a decision to start the photos later and sticking to the GF and the WP before the ceremony for the our photos. Cutting down on stress and potential snags was key – especially with the risk of rain and having to make a last minute call on a location shift.

Once we had that settled I hugged my planner and we left for AKL to make our Jiko dinner reservation. We also knew we needed to talk to the manager about our room block to try to avoid future problems with room assignments, etc.

Next up…dinner at Jiko and our chat with AKL management.

I am living vicariously through you right now. Our wedding is exactly 364 days away. I can't wait... but then again, I can... AKL hadn't really been an option for me to stay in but after hearing you rave about it, I might think about it...

We are meeting with our SM on the 30th when we go to Orlando for Christmas for our site visits. I can't wait. :cool1:

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I can't wait to hear the rest of it. :Pinkbounc

Di :sunny:

that is so sweet about the veils! just goes to show what lovely people dis brides are!

Thanks for all the kind words. Here is another chapter. :)

So before we went upstairs to get ready for dinner (I wanted to shower and get dressed up) we stopped by the front desk at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Fiance asked the cast member if we could talk to the manager on duty to discuss our room block. She really didn’t want us to talk to the manager and insisted that she could assist us. So we began explaining the situation – essentially even though we had a large number of rooms blocked for several days, our guests were not getting their requested room types, while others in our party were getting those rooms – totally unnecessary. So instead of giving the connecting standard and bunk bed room to my sister as she’d requested, they gave the bunk bed room to my mother in law. Geez!! The cast member was basically telling us “tough” the whole time. Fiance was getting really mad now. Finally I looked at her and in my lowest tone (unlike most ppl when I’m angry I lower my voice) I said “Go. Get. The. Manager. Now.” She gave a huge sigh and stalked off.

A few moments later the manager came out. We started over, explaining our situation, the wedding, the room nights, etc. She was very sympathetic and wanted to help however she could. She brought out her room assignment person from the back and together we all went over the reservations coming in and what type of room they would need. They promised to go through the system and do whatever they could to accommodate the preferences of the guests coming in. We said we would be down at Jiko and they offered to stop down and find us once they’d finished the process. Feeling better, I ran up to shower and change for dinner.

We’d told my future sister in law that dinner was at 7:15 because they are always notoriously late for every occasion. But even that didn’t help because they were still half an hour late – turned out they couldn’t get into the Swan that night and had to check into the Westin in Orlando which was further away than they had anticipated. Anyway, we still got seated. We ordered and shared some appetizers and I got a soup with a side of the famous Jiko macaroni and cheese. LOL I think Disney is one of the best places to be a fan of mac ‘n cheese as it seems like every restaurant serves their own version of it! Everything went well except that they were no longer serving the blueberry sorbet I’d loved so much on my last trip. Before dessert came, the room assignment cast member came down and told me they’d been able to accommodate almost all the requests except for one friend who would have to make do with two queen beds (not a big deal) and my sister – there were no more rooms with bunk beds available, unless Fiance’s parents were willing to switch there was nothing to be done. We were very appreciative of their efforts and thanked them profusely. When we returned to our room after dinner we found that they’d even gone the extra mile to give us some Disney magic – they had left us a small gift (two Animal Kingdom pens) and room service had asked us to call at our convenience as they had “something to send up from the manager”. They brought us up champagne and strawberries. I was totally thrilled, I thought it was such a nice gesture and really wonderful of them. We were so grateful for their help and congratulations. We have had a few problems along the way but whenever we finally got to the right person – we have always found that Disney goes out of its way to rectify the situation. <br>

I called my sister about the issue of bunk beds and she refused to actually say “yes” or “no” as to whether or not the bunk beds was a big deal. She was totally noncommittal. It’s irritating. She wouldn’t say “not a problem” but yet she kept saying how she didn’t want to create problems. But yet “well, I requested them because I really wanted them…” etc. Ugh.
The next morning we woke up to Mickey and then noticed we had a voicemail – the manager had left us a message that morning telling us she was back at work in the hotel and to please call her if we had any problems, requests, etc. anything at all. So nice!! Little did she know… So we got out of bed and got our stuff together. We got directions to head to the Osceola courthouse. We headed out there on 192. Not the most scenic drive but we did get to see how much the hurricanes had indeed affected people’s homes and businesses and it was definitely sobering. We finally arrived and found a space in the lot and wandered inside. As we approached the security check point I realized I had mace in my purse and I was afraid they might yell at me, but apparently they didn’t see it – not sure if that’s good or bad…

Anyway we went upstairs and signed on the clipboard. We got our forms a while later and we waited about 45 minutes before they called us up. There were a lot of obnoxious people in there. It was a good thing we’d decided to go because the sign on the door said they were closing on Thursday for Veteran’s Day. After we paid the $97.50 fee, the woman typed the certificate we raised our right hands to swear. She explained how to file the certificate and then we were on our way.

As soon as we got out of there we had to call fiance’s parents about switching their room. They wanted to know what room they’d be switching to so we also had to call the manager again, the one who had been so nice to us and ask her to tell us the room assignment. She helped us set it up for the switch so that my sister could get her connecting rooms with the bunk bed with one caveat – apparently the people in the other room had stayed past checkout time and still were in the room so it would be delayed an hour or so in being cleaned and ready for occupancy. So I called my sister who was at the airport in Orlando by this time and told her we’d accomplished it etc. but that they might want to stop for a snack on their way to Disney before checking in so that there would be enough time for that room to be cleaned and for them to move their things into the new room. That all seemed to be fine. We drove back and decided to sit in the lobby and wait for their arrival so that everything would be smooth. Well they arrived and immediately had kind of an attitude. My brother in law wanted to check in but we said “well, right now they are switching things around for you so we just need to have you wait before you check in. It will probably be an hour or so before this is all set – fiance’s parents were on their way to change everything over for us. So then my sister decides that they can’t wait an hour because her kids want to go swimming. So they say forget it we just want a room now. Um…ok. So the room was cleaned by then and it would’ve been so quick to just do the change…but no. At that point I got angry. We’d really spent a lot of time on the phone and had once again asked for help from the kind manager who I didn’t want to abuse and to me they were totally ungrateful in spite of all of our efforts in an already stressful time. So I said “suit yourself” and walked off. So dumb in my opinion because if they’d waited a little bit they could’ve still taken the kid to the pool and had them change in our room to swim, and then for the whole week they would have the convenience of the bunk beds they wanted – instead they traded 15 minutes of convenience for the room inconvenience over the whole stay. Whatever.

A few minutes later my sister came back and was like “I don’t know why you’re mad at me.” And I basically told her to do whatever she wanted and I didn’t care anymore. We left. Not the best of moments. Fiance had to call the poor manager back to tell her what had happened and she was great – I guess she just got married herself about a year ago so I think she understands a lot of the issues/problems, etc. involved with the event and was really encouraging about it. We finally told her the whole story of our wedding – location switch and all – because we felt we could trust her to keep it a secret. She was blown away about the idea of the wedding at the ToT.

Next up…meeting with family, my parents’ room troubles…
