When the Tower Of Terror dinner proposal was sent to me, my Sales Manager mentioned that if the guests for my vow renewal were different from the guests who had attended last Fall's “
The Haunted Mansion” Movie Set Dinner event, a Tower of Terror dinner menu could be created that incorporated a few of the fun elements from last year's celebration (
for example, the sorbet in the ice skull or the truffles in the chocolate coffin). I thought that was an excellent suggestion and made a mental note of it.
Sadly, there weren’t any photos to share with me of the Tower of Terror venue as it was set up for a dinner party. Photos would have definitely helped me with the tough decision that was facing me. I hate making a decision when I can’t be as informed as possible, especially for something as important as my 20th wedding anniversary. I only plan on celebrating my 20th once (
regardless of how many husbands I might have in the future). I truly wanted to do it right. And without photos to view, I was literally flying blind (
not a good thing for an old broad whose eyesight was failing in her advanced age).
When I shared the dinner proposal with my daughter, a light bulb went off in my head. If I went with the Tower of Terror dinner, I was going to inquire as to whether or not I could request a
specific Cast Member to work my event. I didn’t know if it could be done, but I was going to try like heck if I had to.
You see, when my daughter and I took our
Mother & Daughter Vacation two years ago, we went to Walt Disney World. It was a “
Girls Only – No Boys Allowed” vacation, and we had left her brother and father back at home on the West Coast. The two of us had a ball on that vacation. While we were visiting the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park one afternoon, we rode our favorite ride – the Tower of Terror. As we stood in the bowels of the Hollywood Tower Hotel waiting for the elevator doors to open up and let us in, a Cast Member began making creepy eyes at the two of us. He tried very hard to unnerve my daughter with his goggle-eyes. I must admit that he was good.
Very good. However, my daughter was too stubborn to let on that he was getting to her. It was fun watching the two of them trying to creep each other out. Before we boarded our elevator, I noticed that the Cast Member’s badge stated, “TJ.” The name stuck with me because I had thought it unusual that initials were used instead of a proper name. I hadn’t seen that before.
Fast-forward a few months from that point in time. As my daughter and I were watching a Walt Disney World show on the Travel Channel, a segment on the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park caught our attention. Soon, the two of us were crying out in unison,
“TJ!” Yes, the Cast Member with the goggle-eyes was a part of the television show. My daughter and I laughed. And then we both stated that we wished we were back in Walt Disney World with TJ at the Tower of Terror. When my husband came home shortly after the television show had ended, my daughter couldn’t wait to tell him all about TJ. It was cute watching her relive her Tower of Terror experience. She can be quite animated when she wants to be, and she had TJ’s goggle-eyes down pat as she told her vacation tale.
On the vacation after that one, my leg was broken and I was in a wheelchair. I believe we only visited the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park once and that was strictly for our after-hours dinner party on the set of “
The Haunted Mansion” movie. Sadly, there was to be no Tower of Terror ride for us that year.
For this year’s Summer vacation, however, my daughter and I were truly craving the Tower of Terror. We couldn’t wait to ride it. So, as we stood in the bowels of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, my daughter and I looked around to see if TJ was working. We were sad to discover that he wasn’t. When we finally were allowed to board our elevator, we found ourselves in its backmost row. As our elevator began to rise, my daughter stated that she wished TJ were there. I said that I wished the same thing, too.
Sometimes I swear Disney hears the wishes of their littlest guests. I don’t know how they do it, but they do it. Upon the end of the ride when our elevator’s doors opened, we saw TJ standing there. My daughter and I both let out a little scream. My husband thought something was wrong and then we quickly explained to him that we were thrilled to see TJ. We couldn’t believe our luck.
Strike that – it wasn’t luck, it was pure Disney
~magic.~
Since we were in the last row of the elevator, that meant we would be the last to disembark. I turned my camera on and told my daughter that I was going to ask TJ if he would pose with her for a photo. She was thrilled at the prospect. As we exited the elevator, I said to TJ that we had seen him on the Travel Channel show last year. He thanked us for recognizing him. I then asked him if he would pose for a photograph with my daughter. He said that he would be happy to oblige. I didn’t know it when I snapped the photo, but TJ had given the camera his best goggle-eyes:
My daughter wanted to ride the Tower of Terror again, so we got back in line for a second time. When our ride was over, TJ was waiting for us. I asked him if he would pose for one more photo but this time I wanted to be in it with my daughter. He looked at my husband and asked him if he would like to be in it, too. My husband said that he would, so another Cast Member stepped forward and took our camera. The three of us happily posed with TJ. Again, TJ had given the camera his best goggle-eyes:
As you can see in that photo, my daughter made an attempt at her own
TJ-like pose. It was too funny. I thanked TJ and told him that meeting him was on a par with meeting Mickey Mouse, it was truly a thrill for my daughter and me. I do believe that TJ actually blushed.
So, when I reviewed the Tower of Terror dinner proposal with my daughter that day in June, I knew exactly who I was going to request if I decided to hold my anniversary dinner party there. The one and only
TJ. No one else would do.
