We arrived the 18th and went to Customer Relations in Downtown Disney. It was about a 20 min ordeal to make it happen but in the end we were able to upgrade. I had to pay an extra 43 dollars for three passes because our passes were renewals, which are a little cheaper than the $399 for the premium. Here is the cool part.....
Our passes should have expired in July but by upgrading they are now December. I even asked to make sure and she said yep!! So 43 bucks to go premium and six extra months was totally worth it!!

Congratulations - I also think you received some special pixie dust!

Sounds like the CM used the renewal price as a credit towards a new DVC discounted PAP (the math works as a DVC renewal is $385 and the new DVC PAP is $399). So that's why your year starts on the day you went to Guest Relations. The year for new DVC PAP cannot start before 10/1/2012, so I think that is why the CM decided to just "sprinkle" you. Most of them just hate to say no. :)
