Well I'll never win Mother of the Year:lmao: My poor ds came down with a fever on Christmas Day and had it for the next 3 days. I didn't take him to the Dr because we were in the midst of a blizzard and then yesterday he woke up fever free and feeling quite a bit better. However, he coughed all night long so I brought him in this morning and they said his lungs sounded pretty clear but sent him for an xray to be sure and sure enough...pneumonia. So glad I brought him in. He's feeling even better today but is still dizzy.

Been there. Done that. I pass the crown to you. Middle son kept spiking fevers at night and was near normal and running around during the day. This went on for close to a week before he saw the doctor. Xrays confirmed pneumonia. So sorry that your little guy is dealing with it. Hope he's up and about and causing trouble soon.

I'm also a mother that has been there done that. My son is the king of pnemonia had it more times then i can count he also has asthma, so that makes him more susceptible. Don't worry when he's better it will just be a nother story to tell.

Well, I won't win Daughter of the Year. My 81 year old mother (with Alzheimer's) lives with me. She gets a horrible cough periodically, which we have meds for...but this time, the cough kept getting worse. No fever, still had her appetite, so I wasn't that concerned. Finally got her to the doctor--pneumonia. Luckily, with shots and antibiotics, and daily trips to the doctor (today is our third) , she is improving.

Glad your son is better!

My DS had it a couple of weeks ago. I just thought he had a cold. The school nurse called me to pick him up from school because of a fever and cough, and also included a form that had to be filled out by the doctor. I was so mad, because I figured it was a cold. Well, lo and behold, the doctor said he had walking pneumonia. I felt so guilty. I would have never brought him in. But, we just went back to check to make sure it cleared up, and it did.

So, next time he has a fever and cough, I will probably bring him to the doctor just in case.

Me too! we were suppossed to go away today to a friends ski house so I'm so glad that I finally brought him in. I can't imagine being in the middle of nowhere and him taking a turn:sick: Also, I would have felt horrible exposing that whole family to pneumonia.

My pediatrician said that there is a ton of pneumonia out there right now in my town. My ds is mad because we have 18 inches of snow and he can't play in it and he's not missing any school because of Christmas break, lol.

I'll share that crown with you. Been there done that as well.

DS (8) spiked a fever early November at school. Missed that day and the next day due to the 24 hour rule. Send him to school the following day and the day after that he came home again with another fever. (always between 100 and 101) We yelled at him to toughen up and stop going to the Nurses office.

Kept him home the next day and he coughed so hard he threw up. Took him to the Dr and he had pneumonia.

Hope your DS is better soon

I can relate.
My son had a run of ear infections during his first year. At 11 months, he started acting like he had an ear infection again. I called the ped. office and she was on vacation, wouldn't be in until Friday (this was a Monday). I decided not to go to the clinic in the next town over and to just treat with tylenol and made an appt. for Friday afternoon in case he wasn't getting over it on his own.
Friday morning he woke up making funny huffing sounds on every exhale. I decided not to wait for the appointment and was sitting outside the office door when the receptionist showed up. She called the ped. at home and she came in early to see him. Pnuemonia. We spent 21 days in the hospital.
I felt awful.

Been there, too. My DS got pneumonia on a trip to WDW. The last 3 days he was sick, but he trudged through the parks anyway. One day we all stayed at the condo and rested (he slept the entire day), but then we all still went out to the parks on our last day. He was miserable on the flight home.

The next day I took him in and he had bacterial pneumonia. After a couple days of antibiotics he was feeling much better.

Best of health to your boy!

Kids are tough though, so I'm sure he'll be fine in no time! Healing hugs sent your way, Tiger

I'm so sorry many of you have family members who have had pneumonia. I've had it myself twice, but thankfully neither of my children ever have. My son has asthma that flares up this time of year, and he typically ends up with croup this time each year. As usual, Christmas Eve his asthma cough turned into croup. He was up all night doing inhalers every 2-4 hours, but no relief. I called his pediatrician at 4am and she told me bring him into the office at 8am so she could administer him a dose of steroids, since the pharmacies were closed. Within an hour of having the steroids administered, his cough nearly disappeared. It is awful having sick kids, and certainly does worry a parent.

Been there, done that, more times than I can count with my baby. The first 6 months - 28 months of his life, were awful. Constant double ear infections, respiratory infections (bronchitis and pneumonia), and asthma. He was very ill, but after 4 surgeries and managed asthma, he has not had pneumonia in quite awhile. Ear tube surgery and his asthma puffers changed his life! He is now 3, and he is healthier than ever!

Your son will be fine, but watch his breathing, as my baby boy can spike to 106 fever in no time flat, and sometimes with his pneumonia, he woudn't even cough that much, but once we got him to the ER (they knew us and would take us right away), his oxygen sat rates were very low.

Kids are tough though, so I'm sure he'll be fine in no time! Healing hugs sent your way, Tiger

Your son sounds like my DS4. He had ear infections for the first 14 months of his life, was hospitalized at 4 months old for a respiratory infection, has had bronchitis, and developed asthma at 2 years old. He also had tubes in his ears, which were a God-send, and his nebulizer for managing his asthma has done wonders. The only problem we still have once or twice a year is he still gets croup.

Our poor babes! It does sound like your son is experiencing better health these days - thank goodness!

I forgot to mention that my son's adenoid removal surgery has also been amazing in helping his health improve too. I highly recommend both adenoid removal and ear tube surgery, as they are so helpful with babes who struggle in the respiratory/sinus areas.

Good health to all, Tiger :)

I have had pneumonia more times than I can count but I also have asthma.

The worst was about 10 years ago when i was 11. I had no fever, no wheezing but a cough and short of breath. I went to my doctor and she just said it was a virus. 6 hours later I was in the ER because I couldnt speak a full sentence without being SOB. We found out that my heart rate was over 200 and my O2 sat was 78%. 2 days in ICU and 5 days on the regular med. florr adn I finally went home.

That was the first time I had pneumonia since I was a baby (I had pneumonia 4 times before I was 2. Since that hospitalization I have had pneumonia 13 times and been hospitalized 7 times because of it. Most recently was 2 hospitalizations last winter. I got the pneumonia vaccine 7 months ago and so far so good this winter. I have had bronchitis 2 times since october but no pneumonia yet. If I make it through this winter without pneumonia it will be the first time in 10 years.

Pixie dust for everyone here (and their kids!) for better health and to stay healthy next year!

This is just like my dd9 who is also asthmatic. Three hospitalizations in the PICU for a week at a pop. It's worrisome.

OP, I hope your son comes home soon and is feeling better.

...it must be going around - my nephew has it too! :guilty:

My DS just had pneumonia also. It was horrible. His was bacterial and it came on fast. He was fine in the morning but by the afternoon he had a high fever and wouldn't eat or drink. I took him to the doctor right away because he wouldn't drink and I was worried about dehydration. They put him on azithromycin and he cleared up within a couple days but I still kept him from school a full week.

Thanks everyone! He was much better today...first day that he actually got off thr couch and played a little bit. I'm thinking he will be good to go on Monday when school starts again, lol.

Som sorry to hear that so many of you or your kids have had pneumonia numerous times. Yikes. That's very scary. I hope you all have good health this winter.
