My ds(12) is driving me crazy

I am in the same boat, but my son is 16 soon to be 17. I am broken down. Even the principal of his school is in agreement. As soon as we find a program that will teach life skills, he will be getting out of the traditional classroom. I feel sorry for the teachers who really want to teach our children, when the kids put forth no effort.

Here kids that do not pass at least 4 courses and have more than 9 unexcused absences canNOT get their driver's license and they can have it suspended if at any point after getting it they fall into the previous categories. I like that law but think it should be that kids have to maintain a C average or higher in all classes.

Has he been in detention or Saturday school for not doing his work?? I know the middle school here would do the detention and the High schools will do Saturday School.

I can make him do it, but I can't make him remember to take it to class and turn it in. If he forgets it in homeroom (their lockers are INSIDE their homeroom classrooms) then he gets an automatic 10% off. If he forgets it the next class, it's an automatic zero. DS is terminally disorganized, and forgets constantly. It doesn't help that the school has a flexible schedule, so that they don't have the same classes every day of the week. He'll forget what day it is and leave homeroom with an entire incorrect set of books/papers. We have suggested that he just carry EVERYTHING all day, but he's not allowed to do that -- they are not allowed to use bags to transport their things during the day; they have to carry it all in their hands.

Just curious but has he been tested for ADD/ADHD?? My DD was having the same issues last year and after talking to her doctor and doing all the evaluations, having teachers fill out papers on what they experience with her it was determined she has ADD. She has been on the medicine for a year and such improvements. Her grades were never below a B but she now is an All A student and much more organized.

I havea DS 12 year old but we DON'T HAVE homework issue with him. Thank God.

I'd would take away his priviledges......cell phone, IPOD, or video games until he's homework is done.

>>> having to run to catch the bus

Would things work better if you photocopied the text books so he would not have to schlep them home every night as needed?

>>> left the homework in the locker

(philosophical question only) How to deal with kids who have trouble remembering where they put the homework in the same manner as kids who have trouble remembering the multiplication tables.

We did this, purchased copies of all her textbooks......and made her do assignments that we made up, if she didn't know what the assignment was. ...and of course, our were waaaay harder! :thumbsup2
