I have just had a 'packing wedding dress' trial, and discovered that my wedding dress won't fit into my hand luggage suitcase! It was way too big! Now I don't know what to do, I don't wanna put it in the hold! Any idea's?

WOW, the title of your post made me think YOU cant fit into your wedding dress:scared1:

Can you ship or fed ex it?

I thought the same thing!!

What about a space bag? I have heard of brides using them to skrink and pack their dresses... if you are having it steamed when you arrive it wouldn't matter if it got wrinkly on the plane anyways?

I am so relieved. From your post title I thought you meant the dress didn't fit you!

I would either fedex the dress and pay for 2 day

OR

I would carry the dress in the bag it came with and ask the flight attendant to hang it for you. Usually on overseas flights they are really accomodating about that.

Im doing my trial run on Friday night for trying to fit my dress on my hand luggage case. I ve no clue how im gonna get it in the case as the skirt to the dress is huge but we ll give it a go. Im determined to get it in the case, have brought the largest case possible that just fits the allowed hand buggage measurements.

Theres no way im gonna be separated from my dress but am very nervous what im gonna do if its does nt fit in :scared1:

Im living in hope that my case will work as i know Orangetiggs had a large skirted dress & i know she put her dress in to her hand luggage so friday nights gonna be Operation get dress in hand luggage case for me !!

Dont give up, try every possible angle you can to get your dress in to it. Is it worth getting in touch with the shop you brought your dress from to see if they can pack it in to your case?

Good luck ;)

I plan on taking mine in a suit carrier. I am just going to get another member of our travelling party to hold it while I check in. (they never ask to see your hand luggage anyway!)

I will also take a large carrier bag so if I am asked for it to fit hand luggage requirements then I will squish it in the bag and then once through security and on the plane I will take it out and lie it flat inthe overhead lockers.

Either this or wear it and blindfold Lee for 9 hours !! Either way suits me :rotfl:

at least it won't be in the hold.

Virgin have told me they won't do this, and I've heard shipping costs a bomb, so I think mine is going in a seperate suitcase in the hold.

Why does everyone worry so much about their dress being in the hold? I know it means it's out of your sight, but other than that, have there been some horror stories about this or something?

virgin wont have it in a dress bag or suit bag on the flight they just wont let you do it

Pinkerbell- take it to your dress shop and they will pack it for you, they come in similar boxes when they get delivered so they should have no problem packing it for you

Most airlines if you call ahead a time and tell them you are coming with your wedding dress will allow you to hang it in the captains quarters. I can't beleive Virgin is that way, even if you offer to pay extra or something? that is such crap! The place I am getting my dress from will be steaming it and bagging it before I leave so all I have to do is get a cart from the airline to hang it and bring it to the plane. We will probably take Jetblue and i heard they allow you to bring the dress on the plane and they hang it for you. You should have your bridal shop steam and pack it for you. Then you can just carry it packed by the shop onto the plane with you. when you get to disney then have the dressed steamed although my bridal shop told me a lot of times the dresses stay even when packed and don't get wrinkled.

airlines are different here in the uk, we can only take one peice of hand luggage onti the plane as cabin baggage and it has to be a certain size, I did notice when travelling on American Airlines during an internal flight from Orlando to Miami they allow you on with almost anything but its alot different here when travelling transatlantic

Pinkerbell- cant remember if you are travlling with virgin but this is from their website

Q How should I take a wedding dress on my flight?
A If possible your garments should be packed into a seperate suitcase and marked 'Fragile Wedding Garments'. This will be placed in the hold in the aircraft. Alternatively, your garments can be taken into the cabin as long as they are packed into your hand luggage and fit into the specified weight and dimension requirements. We are unable to hang wedding garments in the Economy and Premium Economy cabins due to the CAA regulations.

Also just emailed a friend I have still working there and they say the same sorry

I put mine in its own suitcase and it went in the hold and it was fine. We even did the twilight check-in. We flew Virgin.

My friends sister-in-law flew Virgin to St Lucia and they hung her dress bag up, she didn't even think about it just assumed they would and they did :confused3

The wedding dress shop I bought my dress from said they'd pack mine for me, she said they roll it round bubble wrap!

Thanks for all your help guys!

After much stressing and many many phone call's, I finally managed to get a straight answer out of someone, and I got them to email it to me just in case. They said that my dress can go in the dress bag that it is in, and nothing else, just to fold it in half, and it can go in the overhead lockers. Phew, what a relief...

I am actually flying with Thomsonfly, not Virgin, so that probably doesn't help a lot of you.
I don't know how you girls got your dresses into hand luggage bags, mine was about 50 times bigger!

Thats fab news :cool1:

I just bought an adjustable luggage strap so that if they insist my dress bag is smaller I can roll it up and put the strap around it to keep it secure !

Then its opened out again and put in the overhead once on the plane ;)

Not long for you now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just out of curiosity where did you get the Adjustable Luggage Strap from & who are you flying with??

Hi

I'm flying from Glasgow with Thomas Cook

The luggage strap was £1.75 from Asda.

Now I think about it I will buy another one so I can space the 2 apart rather than 1 in the middle of a giant wedding dress sausage :rotfl:

This is good to know, I've been feeling like I'll be the only person planning on doing this and was starting to feel like it was a cardinal sin! :rotfl:

This is one of the reasons we are flying Continental. They have a bigger hand baggage size allowance and up to 21kgs so no problem taking my dress.

I've got a space bag just in case it is needed, but someone gave me a really good tip. Don't vacuum too much air out as it can damage any bones that are in the dress. I'm going to use the bag if I need to 'suck it in' a bit!

Shipping isn't really an option as you have to pay customs and duty, even if you ship it to yourself at a hotel or resort, and then pay the same back again!

I was also told by Customs that you could be liable for duty and tax unless you could prove that the dress was a personal item, ie over 6 months old.
