My dog stepped on a thumb tack :(

I was re-arranging some decorations for NYE and had a couple of tacks on my dining room table. While doing my thing, I was also playing with my 3 year old spaniel, throwing a ball around the room for him. Well, I must have knocked off one of the tacks, because as he an after the ball, he yelped so loud and long that I thought he broke his leg from running. I ran over to him, he started to come to me and yelped so painfully again. My kids came running down the stairs, having heard Brian, and I said I think he broke his leg. I picked him up and put him on the couch, looked at the foot he was holding up and OMG I saw the head of the tack in his ped (the cushioney part of his foot). I screamed Oh God and pulled it out and he started weeping tears all down his face. :sad1:

It was bleeding, not so badly, though, and I put pressure on it while my son ran and got the antiseptic solution. My other son held Brian and comforted him while I rinsed the wound. I thought to take him to the 24 hr emergency animal clinic which Than God is only a few blocks from my house, but I decided it wasn't needed, but it did make me grateful to be so close to it just in case.

I wiped his wet face and then I cried. It was all my fault for not being extra careful with those tacks. :guilty: My son said :imagine if Brian stepped on that if none of us were home. Oh God, thanks for that image! NOT!

Brian is fine, no swelling of the foot, no sign so far of infection, but I can tell it's sore. He was all shook and went right to sleep with DH on the couch.

Now get this. If you don't know my husband you'd think he was a heartless son of a bum, because all this happened right in front of him while he sat on the couch watching sports on TV. He didn't say one word or move a muscle to help. But I've been with him for 30 years and I know he can't handle the emotions he was feeling. He often freezes when things like that happens, like when the kids were small. He's stand there yelling at me to do something because he gets paralyzed with fear and worry. So I had to comfort him, too, after it was all over. What an afternoon.

So the lesson I learned is to be extra careful when dangerous things are around, put them away before I start playing with Brian, check the floor for dangerous things etc. I've always been careful with my kids and with Brian, but this was a big FAIL and my heart was torn in half for the afternoon. Especially when he cried.

I love that pup like my own child. :sad1:

Poor puppy, he will be okay!

Nothing worse than hearing your dog yelp, and I mean that.

Aww, poor baby! I'm glad you were home and took care of it right away. Sounds like you did a great job!

Strangely enough, the same thing happened here last night to my son. He came to give me a hug goodnight and somehow a huge upholstery tack had come out of a hassack and he stepped right on it just as he was leaning down. It was in there pretty good, too. He started screaming in pain and it woke DD up, who came running downstairs (and then relayed the message to DH who was sleeping but heard the commotion, lol). It took a while for DS to pull it out but he finally did, then we cleaned it with alcohol and put a bandaid with neosporin on it. He's fine today.

This was a first for us. He'd never gotten hurt before. It was heart-wrenching. I was afraid he wouldn;t trust me ever again, but they love so unconditionally, and I'm sure he felt my heart pain for him. I pray this never happens again, to Brian or any other sweet innocent dog.

And he forgives you for your mistake. That's the great thing about dogs. They are so forgiving. Love the pic. Brian is handsome.

This is what I needed to hear. I was so afraid he wouldn't forgive me.:sad1:

Glad he's okay!

One of my cats burned her paw a few months ago. She jumped up on the stove, as she has a bad habit of licking grease on dirty pans that are waiting to be washed. Usually, they go in the sink, but I left this one on the stove. Anyway, she must have touched the hot burner, because she cried out and came limping over. Her paw was all red. The vet said unless it got infected, there was nothing to be done for it, so we just kept it as clean as we could and kept a watch on it. It took a few days, but it healed fine.

Doggies are pretty forgiving, you'll all be ok. Wives, on the other hand...I stepped on a golf tee in the driveway and had to go to the ER to have it removed. I'm still mad at my husband! :rotfl:

I think you should give him an extra snuggle and some good treats. I am sure he'll forgive you! My kitty hurt her paw on something a few years ago and it was awful to hear her cry. Lots of snuggles and cat treats seemed to speed up the healing process. :)

awwww...he is a lucky dog to have you!! we, as parents, to fur babies and/or other, always feel so guilty when we can't prevent every cause of pain and suffering to our loved ones, and thats just it, we try but...we can't. it will probably be sore for a day or two but lots of hugs will help!!
