My dog has intestinal blockage : UPDATED ( NOT GOOD )

Has anyone elses dog ever had this, does anyone know what that really means ? She's been really sick acting for two days, throwing up and not eatting so I took her to the vet. I have to bring her back in the morning for another xray, ( I wouldn't let them keep her over night, even though they wanted to ) they said she may have to have surgery tomorrow . And we leave saturday for WDW FW with her, oh my goodness I'm sick about this !

Her stomach may be twisted in a knot, if so, and she is an older dog, she may not make it thru the surgery, we lost our PW that way 4 years ago, he couldn't eat or poop, it was sad...Luck to you.

My cat had an intestinal blockage when she ate a rubber band. The surgery was quite expensive, but she ended up OK.

I wonder why you didn't follow your vet's advise about keeping her at the vet? She may need emergency care and she may not get it quickly enough at home.

Could she have possibly eaten something that wouldn't digest properly. I like to watch E Vets on Animal Planet and most of the dogs on there with these symptoms have eaten some "foreign" object and it got stuck trying to come out. One of the puppies ate a whole tube sock and some speaker wire, and it caused the intestine to slide up onto itself. I hope that is all, and most objects can easily be removed.

Not all vet offices are staffed 24/7...they wanted to keep one of my dogs overnight once when he was really sick, but no one was there...at least at home he was right next to my bed not alone in a crate in a dark vet's office.

Intestinal blockages can be very serious. As much as I hate to leave Chloe at the vet, I think I'd feel better if she were there, just in case. I would keep the number and address of an emergency vet clinic on hand, just in case your pup gets worse in the middle of the night.

I can sympathize with doggie problems right before a vacation! Chloe inhaled a jumbo Carmex lid two days before we were to leave on a cruise. We had to have it surgically removed, and then while we were gone, she snapped at a bee and it bit her on the tongue. Yep... right back to the vet.

Hopefully, whatever your dog ate will be moving down the intestinal tract and out the end!! That is why they will take another xray. Here's hoping it is moving out right now! LOL!
Let's see...I have seen my boss ( a vet) take out old coins, those things that go on the bottom of chair legs to protect the floor. Best of all....thong underwear.....yea...loved those clients faces when they saw what their dog ate....whew! What fun!!!

Our black lab ate a corn cob when she was 5 years old. It stuck in her duodenum (it cost me $2800 to learn what the heck a duodenum is). She is now almost 12 years old. Yes, it was definately worth it, but whoa that's alot of $$. My SIL's black lab ate a tennis ball last summer, same exact surgery but it only cost $2300 because there wasn't the night at the emergency vet the night before on an IV with pain meds and fluids. It's quite common, and easy to take care of with surgery if you catch it early, but it's really, really expensive!

Oh MY Gosh I had no idea it was so expensive, I really don't know what I'm going to do now...the reason I didn't let them keep her over night is because she has never been away from us, ever, and they don't staff 24/ 7 so no way, she's already thrown up three times since being home...can you imagine if she was being held in a kennel... I'm sick over this and my cheap butt dh isn't helping matters any.

I would call your vet and let them know that she's still throwing up. Surely they have an emergency number.

If she's still throwing up, then there is still a blockage. That can't be good for her system.

I too work for a vet and can tell you from more than 3 yrs of vet ER experience that this is very concerning and can be life threatening. Please keep a very close eye on your pup and take her to the ER if she's feeling worse. If the x-rays show the suspicious area is moving, your vet will continue to monitor but if it isn't going anywhere, you need to get her into surgery. It is expensive for something like this and can be devistating to anyone faced with it. If your vet takes care credit, please try to apply. Many vets and ER clinics have a credit program for unexpected medical bills, care credit is just one of them. There are some interest free options also if you qualify and the vet offers them. This has made a huge difference between getting care and having to potentially euthanize many pets.

Things to watch for are: increased vomiting or blood in the vomit, lack of energy (lethergy,) difficulty walking, pale gums or breathing changes. If you see any of these things use the emergency number your vet should have provided you.

I hope your baby will be okay! A blockage is serious. We lost a dog because we didn't get him to the vet in time.

Our dog eats the wierdest things. It seems like every month we have her at the vet to induce vomiting because she ate something.

Don't want to add any more worry but we had to my dog down because of this last week. He was 10 years old and apparently had gotten 2 water bottle caps stuck in his intestines.... several xrays, ultrasounds, day visits, emergency clinic trips later we did surgery and the caps actually tore his stomach and pancreas. There was nothing the vet could do. We had to put him down. The surgery was very expensive... in the $3k - $4k range, which included post op care and hospitalization. We haven't received the final bill so I'm not sure what the final amount is.
