My dog got skunked...

AGAIN! Second time in a year! Except this time we can't tell if she really got sprayed or if the smell is coming in from outside. It was really strong when we let her in(she has a run in the front yard), but that could've been the smell coming in the door. I immediately hopped in the shower when I smelled it  But after a few minutes I started smelling it in there. Now, my bathroom is at the other end of the house and my dog hadn't left the room since she came in. But there is an open window in my bathroom. So I think that's where it came from. And I smelled it in my mom's room, where there is also an open window. My dog just ran by me and I didn't really get much of a smell off her. It's hard to tell.

I hope the smell Gods will grant us mercy :worship: :rotfl: When this happened last October I went to school thinking I didn't smell, but I caught whiffs of it throughout the day. It was noticeable :guilty: But, that time I was walking her and she really got sprayed. Hopefully this time the smell will stay away from me. My mom says it's not as strong as I say it is. I've always had a more sensitive nose, so I might think it's worse. But when the smell hit me tonight I almost puked :sad2:

Anybody else have "fun" doggy skunk stories?

No funny stories, but you could try bathing the dog in tomato juice...Mythbusters said it worked pretty well :confused3 Good luck!

Actually bathing the dog in vanilla extract will work better than tomato juice I used to work at a dog groomers and people brought in skunked dogs all the time and thats what we'd use to initially cut the stench.

My dog once got sprayed she was soo excited to get an extra bath (she loves to swim) and she was shaking off her wet hair all over ever single seat and bed in the house...it was lovely....she was frisky to get sprayed and we weren't so frisky

My sister's dog got sprayed about 15 years ago. My niece (a baby at the time) was having a huge diarraria (clearly not spelled correctly), and the whole house smelled like it. (This was before the nice "really enclosed diaper" thingys.)

My sister, who was already sleep deprived due to my niece being sick, didn't even notice the smell of their skunked dog for a couple of hours when my BIL got home.

He clearly ID'd the smelly dog.

Hey - the OP asked for stories - and - this is the only dog/skunk story I have. I know that the skunks are out in our subdivision, as just about everyone is complaining about the lawn damage they are causing.

I couldn't help but chuckling at that, my cat has been skunked before. I saw it happen so I made a quick make-shift garbage bag suit (so I wouldn't be stinky too), grabbed her before she could really start cleaning herself and drenched her in V8 (the only thing I had before I could get a hold of some vanilla extract, which is what my vet friend told us to use when I called her).

It wasn't fun, I'm sorry OP, and anyone else who has had to go through it.

My beagle was sprayed by a skunk once:laughing: My mother went to the dollar store and bought about 15 boxes of douche!!:rotfl: I know what u r thinking but it really does work try it:yay:

well, drop the dog off at Petco for a de-skunk. It is not expensive and they really take care of the dog, they smell and look great afterwards. It is about $40 and includes De-Skunk, bath, full trim, ears, brush out and all kinds of stuff. I love taking my dogs there and they got skunked really good one time.

Tomato juice, vinegar, or Nature's Miracle (I ALWAYS have it on hand now... both my dogs have been skunked in the last year, and that stuff works great!). I have even used tomato soup in a pinch. I sent my dogs to the vets the next day for a "de-skunk" bath. Hopefully my dogs have learned their lesson!

Sorry about your dog! :(
I don't have any good tips for you (or any funny dog stories, I'm sadly allergic to dogs), mostly because I've never had one of my pets sprayed by a skunk. I would just recommend searching online for some tips on how to get the smell out. Good luck!

It's only a matter of time, we have a skunk in our neighborhood. S/He'll spray every couple of days. Last night I commented to my dd that the skunk was in someone's garbage. The spray had a bit of a garlicky odor! :rotfl:

There was a strong vapor cloud around our house when younger DD was leaving for school yesterday. Made sure to plug in the noisemaker again & no noxious fumes last night or this morning.

Thank goodness!

Well I've decided that the smell isn't on the actual dog. Because when I woke up this morning she was on the floor next to my bed and I could barely smell anything. Just a little from when it came through my window. But I walked into the family room(the first room she was in last night after she came inside) and the smell slapped me in the face :headache: It's better than last night. I put my nose right on my dog's head and did get a skunk smell from her, but I don't think she really got sprayed. That happened to my cat once. He just rubbed against something a skunk had sprayed. I'm opening all the windows to try and let the smell out.

Thanks everyone!

OMG! About a month ago I had JUST dozed off when my husband comes bursting into the bedroom saying "CRAP! Cupcake's outside and I smell skunk!" So I ran to the door (she comes to me best, probably because I feed her lol) and she was RIGHT there trying to come in, along with a skunk smell so strong I almost lost my dinner. :crazy2: Sooo, we took her outside, daughter started filling buckets and jugs with warm water (she HATES cold baths) an husband went to the local grocery store for Dawn, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda (thank goodness it was not quite 10, when they close!) while daughter and I sat outside on the driveway with Cupcake between us, who KNEW what was going to happen and was NOT too happy about it. Keeping her from wandering and trying not to breathe skunk-stench was tough!

So anyway, husband got back, we made the glop mixture and proceeded to clean the HECK out of that poor dog... she was remarkably good about it, almost like she knew it wouldn't help to fight it. :cutie:

We finished cleaning her up, rinsed and towel-dried (which took forever with her husky fur), and FINALLY she was let back into the house. Where we then discovered that she hadn't been skunked at all; apparently the skunk had sprayed outside, but not anywhere near Cupcake!  Husband went right out to the 24-hr gas station and picked up a pig's ear for her to apologize.

We'd been through the skunking once before, so I can say that the Dawn/HydroPerox/Baking Soda mixture works VERY well!! And, it's recommended by my doggie's veterinarian; they even have flyers they hand out about it. :thumbsup2

I think that's what happened. I know she barked and I think she might've scared a skunk in the yard. But she was on a rope so it's not like she could've run over to the skunk. The skunk would've had to approach her to spray her directly. But my mom thought it was on her and opened all the windows to get the smell out. She didn't know it then but she was actually letting the smell IN. :faint: :rotfl: It's better today. Now I have windows open to get it out. My doggy doesn't really smell so I'm hoping we can just get the smell out of the house and be okay. Last time, when she really got sprayed, it took MONTHS for the smell to go away :guilty:

Isn't the smell horrible?! I seriously almost threw up. My mom thought I was being over dramatic but as I said before, I have a really sensitive nose so I get queasy from smells easier than her. :sad2:

Do you have a "recipe"? Our dog loves to "play" with skunks. And racoons. And groundhogs. And snakes.

Here you go!

In a plastic container, combine 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of Dawn Detergent. Add lukewarm water if needed (I don't; I leave it a gloopy mess). Mix ingredients well. The solution will fizz, as a chemical reaction is occurring. Use immediately - do not store.

Do not soak your dog with water prior to bathing (this spreads the skunk oil). Promptly begin cleansing the affected areas thoroughly, massaging the solution deep into your dog's coat. You may wish to use a sponge or washcloth (I use gloved hands). Avoid getting the solution in the eyes, ears or mouth.

Allow the solution to remain on your dog for at least five minutes (longer if strong odor persists).

Rinse your dog well with lukewarm water. Repeat steps 3-5 as necessary until odor is gone. The first time, Cupcake's collar was skunked; no amount of washing seemed to help that, I just threw it out and replaced it, lol!

Dry your dog well and give her a treat!

My dog got skunked a couple of weeks ago too. While my boyfriend ran for the store to get tomato juice, I turned to Google. I read that tomato juice works, but it will turn a white coat red. No way was my pretty Sheltie going to turn red! I'd rather have her stink!

I read that pouring ginger ale on the dog helps. We poured a two-liter bottle of Canada Dry over Lucy and it really cut the smell. Then we did the baking soda/dish soap/hudrogen peroxide mix that someone just mentioned. Beware that it will bubble at first, so mix it well before you put it on the dog. It really worked. The only problem with Lucy was that she was skunked right in the face and eyes.
