My DLP report!!

Thanks for the great report! :thumbsup2

If you get a chance, would you please tell us about the language barrier - if there was one? Also, was there any sort of anti-American atmosphere?

My cousin is debating a trip to DLP next year and those 2 factors are all that's holding her back.

Thanks.

Don't you dare apologize for the length of the report! This is the level of detail we all want! Great job! :goodvibes

I will be taking 2 of my kids next year, and this is such great information! Thanks.

Thanks, everyone!! It really was a great trip!!

Mia....we were in Europe for 17 days. We rented an apartment in Paris, but we also did a driving tour of Germany (my favorite!!), Switzerland, and southern France (the Alps). Hmmm....how long to stay at DLP? Well, I don't know...I think that depends on each person. One different thing about DLP is that Fantasyland is a much bigger area of the park, both in acreage and number of attractions. We did not have the pleasure to ride the Indiana Jones roller coaster, or the Space Mountain...even though we really wanted to...our dd just had other ideas! ;) There really was much of the park we didn't get to experience, and we didn't make it over to the Studios (where they are adding TOT...it looked pretty cool!). Many families we spoke to had been there for a week and were not tired of it. I certainly think 3 days would be a good minimum.

Olaf....people were actually pretty good in queues, there were a couple of times when couples would pull the "motorcycle trick", and make their way up to the front of the line (they were pretty amazing to watch...nice people study), but except for food lines, where it was "every man for himself", the queues went fine.

magicalmcwho...thanks about the theft. It appears that a website where I have done some shopping (and had CC# stored) got hacked out of India. Someone there made about $800 worth of charges, and then sold our information to someone in California who was using our cc# to purchase domain sites via many providers (obviously to set up his own fishing expeditions), as well as online dating and "adult" websites. Unfortunately, because we had limited access to the internet in Europe, and had so many charges (subway stations, autobahns, etc.) we were slow to catch the problem. Plus, we were more concerned with the fact that dh's company had an "accounting error" while we were in Europe, and decided that they would not use direct deposit for employee's paychecks and bonuses, but would (for this one pay period only), overnight checks to employees via DHL. So, we were in Europe with no way to get our hands on dh's paycheck/bonus check, and our regular debits (house payment, insurance, etc.) were still scheduled to leave our bank account...pretty scary!!! He had to work hard to get that direct deposited....we weren't noticing a few hundred dollars in random charges...until we got home. My cc company thinks the leak might have come via Paypal...the rep says that site is the biggest problem they have.

mrsminniemouse...okay, I am SOOOO jealous!!! What GREAT rewards from your grocery store!!! You are going to have the most AMAZING time!! I cannot even imagine having the view from DL hotel. When we were at the hotel trying to see if they had any rooms available, a mom and daughter came downstairs in spa robes...obviously they had just been pampered. It made me smile. I thought, "What a fun thing for a mom and daughter to do." They say that the Castle Club pampers you like no other Disney hotel does...I hope you have a "Once in a lifetime" kind of trip!!!

disney-super-mom....Yes, I would love to go back to DLP, but nothing compares to WDW!!!

KelNottAt...we did not experience a language barrier as dh is almost completely fluent in French (some vocabulary still mystifies him). However, with his accent, no French person ever mistook us for French...but, they did not think we were American...they always assumed we were British. We did have some very nice, lengthy discussions with some French, British and Scottish folks....and, they were never anything but nice. They don't understand why Americans are not more upset with Bush (especially the Brits who are so anti-Blair right now), and they don't understand why we don't seem to be doing more to combat global warming, but they were never anything but VERY respectful and kind. I have actually been emailing some people we met there, and we had both a German and a British family invite us to come stay with them. People were VERY kind. I think one of the biggest misconceptions regards the French people, and how unfriendly they are to Americans. Time and time again, we ran into the most kind people in France. They helped us carry our bags and stroller up the subway steps, gave up their seats to my dd on the subway, gave my dd "trinkets" in souvenier stores, and smiled while she butchered their language. I was surprised at how the subways in Paris were silent during rush hour, and conversations were so quiet. My dh would speak with someone in French, and by their body language, I would assume they were not that friendly, only to have my dh comment on how kind or helpful they were as we were walking away. We left feeling that the French people are much more subtle in their body language, almost to the point of seeming "shy" to us (except when they drive...I'm not sure what happens there), but they were INCREDIBLY kind. I think as long as you make some attempt to honor their social codes, such as remembering that all stores/businesses are private spaces and that you should greet the shop owner/associate upon entering, keep your voices low, and learn a few key phrases, you will find that most French people will go out of their way to help you. Paris was amazing. We walked around, sometimes until 1 or 2 in the morning with our 4yr old dd, and never felt unsafe...even for a second. There is a sense of community in Paris that I have never felt in US...it was very heartwarming. I miss that a lot. People truly don't value "stuff" over there nearly as much as Americans do...they have small apartments and don't have room for more than what they need. They value intelligence, friendship....and good conversation/debate. I was awed by how "worldly" and "intelligent" everyone seemed. It was not unusual to see a CM at DLP with 6 flags on their tag (identifying that he/she spoke 6 languages)...the world is certainly much smaller for them, and it changes the way they see their responsibility to other peoples and other nations. Those people, as a culture don't waste anything...resources are too precious. For us, the lesson of the way they live was precious...and something I hope we never forget.

3DisneyKids...Thanks!!! :goodvibes You and your kids will have a WONDERFUL time!!!

And, to everyone who has asked for pics...I PROMISE I will get those out sometime this week!!!

Beca....loved your report and also reading your replies :thumbsup2

Until I read your report I didn't think I had to visit DLP but now I do! Sounds like your trip was more than a vacation...it was a true experience....and those are the best.

Thank you for sharing,

Jen

Great report. It felt like I was back there.

We used DVC points to stay in the New York hotel last year and we really didn't like that hotel and wish we stayed in the Sequoia Lodge. Before we were DVC members we had stayed at the Disneyland Hotel and also Davy Crockets, both of which we liked very much.

The cabins at Davy Crockets are great but you will need a car.

We went during the UK school holidays last October and around 50% of the voices we heard were english. Surprisingly however there was not one english speaking film on at the many screens cinema. Again it was very crowded and we did not think there was enough to do.

I guess we will go again perhaps whilst driving down to Spain in a few years time.

We have also stayed at the Asterix theme park hotel just outside Paris which is lovely.

Thanks again for the report.

Also the prices are extremely expensive especially the vodka in the New York Hotel bar!

Super report Baca..Thanks for sharing !! :grouphug:

BTW.... Might you have any pics to post??? Would Love to see some!! :cloud9:

What a fabulous report! My DH is just dying to go to Europe. But with the new baby, I do not want to travel overseas for a while. How did your DD do with the long flight? I have already prepped DH that when we do go we are spending at least 3 nights at DLP and definately staying at the Disneyland Hotel. I am glad it is as pretty in person as it looks in photos!

So sorry about the cc. I hope you get it straightened out soon!

Thanks for the report! I was lucky enough to spend a day in DLP myself just last week. I was travelling to Paris for work, and had a free day the day that I arrived. Took the VEA bus from CDG (which was LATE and SLOW), checked my luggage at Guest Services (2.50 euros, and well worth it), bought a ticket (SLOW), and strolled on in.

I have to agree with a number of your observations, particularly on the smoking issue. I am a some-time smoker myself (if I am travelling alone, without my family), and was very careful to search the park map for the designated smoking areas. Well, there AREN'T ANY! This may be one of the reasons that people smoke everywhere.

I was not impressed with the ability of CMs to guide guests onto the rides (it was kind of a free-for-all).

I liked some of the DLP versions of the rides better than those at WDW (I've been at DLP once before, but I had forgotten what most of the rides were like). For instance, I think that Small World, the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean are much better at DLP. I also love the Storybook Land ride.

Also, since I was travelling solo, I was very aware of other solo travellers--or rather the lack thereof. I don't think that I saw one other person who looked like they were travelling alone.

At the end of the day, I picked up my luggage and took the RER into Paris.

All-in-all a very pleasant diversion. My coworkers think that I am nuts, as I tacked on a day at Hong Kong Disneyland to a work trip there last spring. Ah well, I guess I am! (Nuts that is.)

I don't think your nuts, just lucky!!!!

Beca, I know you said that language wasn't a problem but what about the shows and the story telling (in the castle) is it in French? I am trying to plan a surprise trip in March for my hubby's bday and will go for the Dl hotel. Thanks for all your insight. I am a little intimidated but can't wait to go.

Thanks for sharing. Wish there was somewhere you could post your trip report to the other areas you visited, I would love to hear about them also.

Sorry about Credit Card problems, been there done that, and Yes Paypal was involved. Please keep on top of it for months, as it will not go away quickly. My problems lasted over a year.

MrsMinniemouse, how is DLP accessible by car from England :confused3

Do you ferry your car over?

Hi Sammie, you can use a ferry but we use Eurotunnel which is quicker. We live near London, so we drive to the English south coast and drive our car right onto a train that is sitting in a tunnel. Our car is parked in a long line behind other cars, the train is double decker too. The train takes us all through the English Channel and when it stops and we drive off we are in Northern France. From there is is a 3-4 hour drive to DLP. You can travel without your car as a foot passenger and get off the train at a station right at DLP. It is very direct and avoids having to drive. For us, with our small children, it is easier to go in our own car so we can take all our stuff.

You can take a car ferry but the Eurotunnel is quicker. Of course, flying is an option too but again luggage is limited and with airport check in times it isn't much quicker. We can buy more stuff when we take our car too- lots of big things that would be hard to get home on a plane. Also, with bad weather expected we can take coats, boots and just put it all in the car.

Would still rather pack light and go to WDW though!

Beca -

I am so glad I found this post! We are headed to DLP in November and are using our points to stay at the Newport Bay (I wanted the Sequioa, but there are no rooms avail for one of our nights).

I was told when we made our ressies that we HAVE TO have the confirmation letter in hand to check in. Is this true? And if so, why?? I am concerned only because we made our reservation only 2 1/2 weeks out and we have a military APO address (we are stationed in Europe right now). The military mail system can be SLOW at times and I am worried we won't recieve the confirmation in time. I just don't understand why having the actual letter is required...I haven't needed it for any other Disney vacation.

Thanks again for your detailed post, it had some great information!

Well, boy am I going to put your mind at ease!!! Since we did not call until we got to Paris, we did not have ANY way of getting a confirmation letter. They did ask us at check-in for it, but we told them we did not receive one for the reason above. They said "No problem", and found our ressie anyway. So, I wouldn't worry about it!!

Although I really did like the Seqoia better, the Newport Bay is a beautiful hotel...you are going to LOVE it!!!

Sammie,

I'm sorry I didn't respond to your post more quickly...I JUST saw it!!! Thanks for the "heads up"...we did cancel our paypal, and strangely...we just changed our phone number two days ago. However, I did receive ANOTHER phone call today about another domain site...I'm not sure if it was us, or the people who had the phone before us (there are TOO many changes going on here!!!), but needless to say, Paypal is definitely a thing of the past for us!!!

PM me with your new number, if you'd like to chat....

I"m going to OKW in two weeks. Yea!
