OK, I am trying to get things together for our first trip to WDW with the kids. I have begun packing (in my head) and just thinking about everything we will need to bring for all 4 of us, I suggested we pack 4 suitcases!

Well, DH nearly broke a blood vessel when I said that! :earseek:

He wants only 2 ... what do you Disney vets think? The kids are 6 yr old DS and 3 yr old DD!

I would go ahead and bring all four so that you will have someplace to put all the neat things you will want to bring home with you. If your kids have those small suitcases on wheels that would be great for them to bring and they should be able to pull them as well.

If you are flying make sure NO one suitcase exceeds 50 lbs (or whatever your airline allows) Also, check the size requirements for your airline. If you are use to the two HUGE suitcases you may be charged up to $50 each for excess weight or size. That would be a GOOD reason to do the 4 smaller ones!

I used to pack for 4 of us in one large bag - no more. I've come too close to exceeding the weight limit on our last two trips. I would take the four bags. In fact, we just bought 4 smaller suitcases for just this reason.

I would say less is better as long as you dont exceed the weight limit. We have flown out of islip/macarthur on southwest and at curbside they do not weigh luggage. At Laguardia, american is so picky and delta was not much better. Also are you bringing anything like car seats, booster seats, strollers etc. I would bring a smaller duffle bag to fold in the suitcase and you can use that for extra souveniers. You will have enough with keeping an eye on your kids, so the less luggage the better. You can always wash at your hotel if need be.

WHen are you going, where are you staying and for how long??? This will help in helping you plan!

Bring all four bags. It is not like you are carrying them around the whole time. You will actually handle your bags only a few times and the things you pack in the extra two will probably pay off in the end. DH, you are wrong on this one.

We're leaving next Wed!!! and staying at WL. I guess I could do laundry... uggh... I hate laundry, especially on vacation!

I will definately pack a duffel bag... for souveniers and stuff. Maybe we'll do 3 bags and one carry-on!?

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

You are gonna LOVE WL!!! It is so beautiful and peaceful there.... and there is a laundry too! OH BOY! I'd tell DH that you think you can manage with 2 suitcases- if HE is willing to do some laundry while you are there! Otherwise- he's gonna have to accept 4 suitcases.... and be sure you say it in a very diplomatic way. Something like.... 'honey, I've been thinking about your idea about taking only 2 suitcases with us. The WL has laundry facilities, but I am unwilling to laundry on our vacation. If you are willing to do a few loads of wash in the middle of our trip so the kids can have clean clothes- then I think I will be able to pack with just 2 suitcases- otherwise, I'm afraid it's gonna be 4.' Let's see how that works- I bet there'll be some fast talking then!

I've got 4 kids, ages 7, 6, almost 5, and almost 3. Our first trip is Nov and I'm packing 5 suitcases - one each for the kids and 1 for my husband and me. Each of the kids has their own Disney suitcase and they can roll it themselves. It also makes it easier to find their clothes as opposed to sorting through everthing to get their stuff. They also think it's cool to have their own suit case. We're coming via Amtrak, so I really don't have to worry about a weight limit. But if you're flying, break it down into 4 bags. You know you're coming back with more stuff than what you went with!!! Have a great trip!!!

We have 5 in our family & usually take 4, 5 or even 6 suitcases depending on how long we are there. We take one with all our toilettries, shoes, fanny packs, etc. DH usually gets his own, I usually share with a DD & the other 2 DD's share one also. Like I said, depending on how long we stay, I sometimes pack one myself also.

Don't know what your DH is like, but if he's so adamant on only 2 suitcases, I would make a list for him of the things that need to be packed & tell him to make sure he doesn't forget anything, especially the laundry soap because he'll need it to do laundry if the family members run out of clothes because he didn't want to take an extra suitcase with extra clothes!!!!!!! Oh - also tell him to make sure he leaves room in those 2 suitcases for souvenirs. They tend to take up more space than you would think on the return trips!!

DH used to question why we had so many suitcases also, until I told him if he could do better he was more than welcome to. Now he doesn't say anything, just packs the car & tells me what a great job I did packing. :p

Just put the first day's clothes in them ,then enjoy yourself buying anything else you need.
After 30 years holidaying in America that's what we do.

I hear this every vacation! There are 5 of us and I pack 5 suitcases. Each child has a small one on wheels. In fact, every suitcase is on wheels, so we each pull one - it's not like he has to carry them all, but DH complains every time. I've found that if you're willing to tip a few dollars, you hardly ever have to handle your suitcases.

If I'd let him, DH would go on a week's vacation with pair of shorts and 3 t-shirts. He doesn't get why anyone would need more ... but of course, once we're at our destination, it's "Did you bring this?...."

I am so glad that my DH isn't the only one!!

Thanks for all the info/tips! There are currently 3 suitcases open on my dining room table... already filled. DH is realizing that just packing what we "need" is going to be about 4 suitcases! And, I reminded him we will be coming home with more than we left! ;)

Take all four, what are husband good for :smooth: (carrying all of them!!!)

Besides you will need the extra room for your souveniers :p

let him pack his own ,it's women that allow him to say that

Pack all four bags! It is cheaper than having to ship things home or buy a suitcase or two. In the past we have done both! Better safe than sorry; and it saves a lot of time and money in the process.

Good Luck!

I have these luggage set. For three of us I check in 3 suit cases all on wheels(one large for pirate: , one medium for :earsgirl: , and a small one for princess:. I carry two small bags on the plane. One with all the toilatories, and one with a change of clothes for every one in case the luggages are lost.

Here is my tip with multiple bags:

Bungee cords!!!!

All of our suitcases had wheels, and we packed bungee cords in an outside zipper pocket of one of the suitcases, and when we were getting our luggage, hubby bungeed all four bags together and wheeled them from bag pickup to our car rental counter at the airport.
We were there 11 days and had four big suitcases, a duffle bag on wheels, a stroller, a car seat, oh ya, two kids.
He was able to handle the suitcases, while I pushed a kid in the stroller, and the other kid pulled the wheeled duffle.
I will pack lighter for our next trip in Aug 2004, but not much lighter. We all had backpacks too!

My hubby was the envy of several other hubbies at the airport (especially at 1:00 am!)

Four bags for sure! And always an extra light weight fold-up duffle packed in somewhere...big enough to hold lots of unplanned extras for return trip, but small enough to carry on if you're checked to the max. I've learned the hard way too many times!!! :wave2:
