Mom, what are camping people?

She was playing at with BFF and they were discussing vacations. Apparently, DD mentioned we were camping at Ft Wilderness for Halloween.

BFF went and asked her mom when they could go camping.
Mom replied, "Oh Honey, we ARE NOT camping people."

My DD later imitated the mom perfectly with the voice tone and eye rolling.

So let me ask, What exactly are camping people? I always thought we were pretty normal.

To us, camping means a lot. It means family time together, enjoying each other, being with loved ones,,now days family time and time together is a rare thing among familes,,especially THOSE who don't camp.Families today dont eat together, dont talk to each other, dont do things together.
Camping people are all about being in the outdoors, fresh air, gettn back to nature and the wildlife in it.
Camping is about gettn away from the daily drudgery of the fast paced, hurry up and rush to get things done in life and work. Camping is a spiritual and physical experience for me, it helps me to rest , relax,,enjoy and rejuvenate and recharge myself.
Camping gives us a opportunity to meet people (other campers) from all walks of life, from all over the country and in some cases, the world. Many of these meetings turn into friendships unlike any you'll ever have with NON campers.
Camping can take you places that you very well may never go to if you dont camp,,camping opens many doors that folk would not expect,,unless you try it.
I could go on and on,,and I'll say this,, camping is not for everyone, and you wont know if it's for you if you dont try it. But til you try it,,don't knock it,,and I won't knock what a boring non existent life you lead.


and besides,,camping also gives you a lotta fishing opportunities

If we hadn't been camping over the last 38 years I guarantee we wouldn't have visited all the places that we have.

I consider myself to not be a "camping person".

Not that I'm a hotel snob.... I like to camp and have before, I'm just not good at it. I've done camping in a motorhome in Fort Wilderness and I have camped kinda "tent" style in a utility trailer with matteress on the floor, an air conditioner, some coolers and a coleman stove. I say I dont do camping well because my food spoiled and cooking and cleaning up after cooking was difficult... I guess I'm just not organized enough to be a "camping" person and choose to be lazy and go to the hotel.

Don't forget about sitting around a fire roasting marshmallows and making smores.

If we didn't camp when I was young we would not have gone to half the places we went to.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. I love Frank's description of "camping people." We seem to fit right in the bunch. Now I will smile smugly as my neighbor says "camping people" like it's a disease.

You could also add falling asleep to the chorus of crickets and other night things and the smell of dwindling campfires. Is there anything better in the world than that?!

We love being camping people. I think the best part is when you first wake up, make yourself some coffee and sit in your camp chair watching the campground wake up. We always have the best time with the little animals that seem to visit the site. We even name them. There was a male/female set of little birds one trip where the man seemed to be completely henpecked. My DH named them Jerry and Dee after his parents.

We love to camp but some folks definitely don't. I'm a GS leader and one of the girl's mothers told me once "I did not work my butt off in college, get a good job so I could buy a nice house and then pretend to be homeless over the weekend." Hmm, okay.

But read Frank's description. That about sums it up!!!

We consider ourselves campers but I usually use the term "RVers"
My trailer has a queen bed, flat screen TV, bathroom, microwave, hot water, refrigerator and many other convenience items, hardly what I consider hard core camping.......

I get to spend time (good and bad) with my wife and kids and her dog.
A connection that few families have any longer.

Last year when I told a few of my friends we were camping at FW, they looked at me and sorrowfully said, "Oh." Well, of course it offended me, but then I just laughed and actually felt sorry for them. I think Frank's "camping person" description was right on! I have camped with family friends for years and my parents were blessed to get a camper in January '09 which has allowed us to camp with them several times. Our plans were to get a hybrid or popup for this year, but it's looking like that is not going to be possible. So, we're getting a good tent and we already have reservations for a state park May21-23. We can't wait!

We brought some friends camping with us last year -- it was their first time. After the first night, they told us "you don't necessarily like CAMPING, you just like OUTDOOR LIVING!" lol

I guess they're right -- DH and I both love the outdoors, the trees, the critters, the sounds at night, and just being away from people! Not all people of course. Other campers are great. It's just nice to be away from work people, and city people, and neighbor people, and driving people.......

We like staying at hotels too -- but camping is a totally different experience.

So, I guess camping people like to relax and enjoy their vacations. No packing and unpacking of suitcases. It doesn't take long to set up a campsite, unless, like us, you like to add decorations. As a camper, I can take my dogs. That is one if the biggest perks. Maybe, less people should be "camping people" and then it would be really easy to get a reservation at The Fort.
