on the bar/bat mitzvah circuit. otherwise known as the grand tour of every synagogue and kosher catering establishment in a 15 mile radius. two parites last weekend, two parties this weekend, and three more invitations just arrived in the mail.

I'm exhausted just from driving her back and forth!

ah the best noshing known!!! I hope she has had a great time.

Personally I have never been to such an event, however I would really like to attend one someday. I find it to be an interesting and grand way to usher a child into adulthood. and a GREAT REASON to throw a party!.

We have been to one bar mitzvah, one of the nicest religious services I ever attended.

Oh, she is having so much fun. I remember when my son was in the 7th grade, he looked so forward to everybody's bar mitzvah's.

I was just glad I had a boy and he could wear the same "uniform" to every bar mitzvah. The girls' tried to get a new dress for every occasion! How about your DD?

Briar Rose -

My DD has had 2 invitations. Had to miss the first one, but hopes to make it to the next - but we do want to give gifts for both. Can you help me out on what is an appropriate gift for her to give? One girl is a relatively new friend, the other has been around for almost 10 years - both would be considered good friends. Thanks for your help.

the rule I've been following is $36 for a friend, $50 for a good friend. ($36 is a multiple of 18, which has signficance. in Hebrew letters are used instead of numbers, and the number 18 and the word "chai" -- which means life -- are written the same way.)

fotunately some of the parties are with different groups of friends, so she's been able to wear the same dress more than once. and I do have a younger dd, who'll be doing the circuit in two years -- and who would love to acquire the older one's dresses once she's outgrown them.

I learn something new every day here. Thanks for the explanation, Robin. Megan attended the Bat Mitzvah of a school friend years ago, but the girls attending, went together and bought her a large gift. We really had no experience to draw from. Megan said it was a wonderful celebration.

it's an important rite of passage and a wonderful celebratiion.

it's also very easy to lose sight of the religious significance of the event and get lost in the party planning. I was very pleased to see my dd explaining the service ot some of her non Jewish friends.
