My daughter fractured her elbow possibly in 2 places and may need a pin in one those. Will not know what will happen til possiblt Tuesday if I can get her seen. We are suppose to go to Disney (our 1st family trip with just us) at the end of January. Would you postpone the trip or would you still go? I have really been looking forward to this trip but not for sure if we should go now or not. We were suppose to tell them tomorrow but don't know whether I want to now. What wold you do??

Ouch! That sounds very painful! Did you have her to urgent care? Who told you it needed a pin? What hapened?

:grouphug: to your daughter!

My dd has broken her elbow - TWICE! (unbelievable to me even. LOL)

First time she was in 5th grade, 2nd time she was in 9th grade. (same elbow) they can't cast elbows b/c the elbow can lock, so the worst part (for us anyways) was the early days because the elbow was just in a sling - very painful when it moved at all, but after a couple of weeks, it seemed to hurt only if bumped seriously - so roller coasters would be out, but non-jarring rides I think Katie would have been able to do.

She pretty much functioned ok - and after the first few days, the elbow hurt only when moved (which she had to do to make sure it didn't lock) or bumped (which we tried not to do. LOL)

also be sure to ask about the growth plate - b/c that was a huge concern the first time, but not so much the 2nd time around b/c of her age.

I would wait until I talked to the doctor before I made any decisions. I would still go if the Doc gave it the okay.

My daughter who is 7 now, broke her elbow this summer. She needed an emergency surgery, and 3 pins were placed. She did this on May 28th. We had a surprise trip planned for her birthday, leaving on June 16th. We still went. She was able to do pretty much what she wanted, which in retrospect, wasn't that much. They put her in a soft splint, that half way through our trip we were able to take off. So she was able to go swimming. She still rode several rides, but didn't do a couple of her favorites because she was to nervous.

When did she fracture it? If on Tuesday they say she needs the pin, when will it be placed? I had wished we had postponed our trip just 1 week, in terms of her healing, but we had lots of family going with us who just couldn't rearrange their schedules.

We are fortunate in the fact that we are able to go a 3-4 times per year. I think if it had been a trip we had planned for a long time, and the only 1 we had planned, I would have postponed it until the pins were out. I'm not 100% sure I would have done that, but truly, that would have made the best decision.

PM me if you want to talk, or have any questions. Good luck with your decision, I know it's not an easy one.

I did take her to the Urgent Care and they were the ones that said the big fracture looks like a 1/4 of inch of xray might need a pin. But they did mention she would probably be in a cast. Guess I will wait and see what the orthopaedics says. Thanks everyone. And she really isn't haven't that much pain just when she bends it. very strange

My DD "broke" her elbow last January, she was 3 at the time, had a cast from her bicep to hand. She was able to do everything as normal as possible without pain after the first week or so....my advice, go ahead and do the trip! Good luck

Our 7 yr old broke her elbow this past may. We had to wait a week before they did surgery.(because of the swelling) She had 2 pins in for about 3-4 weeks. then they took the pins out and she was in a cast for 6 weeks. She is a very active child. None of this (except the first night) has slowed her down. She has a heck of a scar and some problems with pain when it is damp outside but other than that fine!! Good luck

I broke my elbow 5 weeks before we went in November. I didn't have to have pins in mine but it was fine by that time. I would ask the doctor what they suggest.

Yeah, the scars are beautiful, aren't they? Did her pins start to come out on their own??? My DD's did, it was DISGUSTING!!!! What day in May??? Maybe we were at the same hospital, different location....strange, huh??
