He seems perfectly healthy, otherwise. Gromit is eating well, and drinking plenty of water. I brush him a lot, so he doesn't have hairballs. He is somewhere around 9 or 10 years old. The coughing isn't constant...it comes in little spells, 2 or 3 times a day. Gromit is strictly an indoors cat. He never goes outside and I have never had a problem with him eating non-food items. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Our cat has had similar symptoms and the vet said it was probably allergies. If you notice people coughing/sneezing due to the change of seasons, it can happen to your cat too. Hope the case with your cat is no big deal:)

Even if you brush him everyday it could still be fur balls. He is probably licking himself while you are sleeping and tat just collects. Some hairball remedy treats should stop it for you.

Also, kitty cats and dogs can have allergies just like people do. If you have any strong fragrances like candles or air fragrance generators you could put them in ziplock bags and in the garage or the trunk of your car for a few days and see what happens. At least this would be my second step. If it's something else I'd check with the vet to see if Benedryl can be given to cats and get the dosage. Sometimes pets can get the same stuff as us and other times they get similar but different medicine, be careful with this stuff.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Our cat dusts the baseboards for us (despite all our attempts to get her to stop). This accounts for a big of her troubles... including some coughing: not hairballs, but literally dustballs.

Allergies and/or asthma could be the issue. I had a kitty (who passed away earlier this year) who suffered from asthma for several years. He was treated with steriod shots, which controlled his attacks. Over time, he needed the shots less and less, and eventually not at all. If the coughing persists or increases, please see your vet.

I wouldn't give benadryl before the vet checks him out. That being said, my cat just had hives and I was told they can have benadryl tablets or liquid at a dose of 1mg per lb. THe tablets are 25 mg, so a/2 a tablet would be good for a 12 lb cat.

Cats get colds just like us as well. Is his nose running or is he sneezing?
